Apple has agreed to pay $95 million to settle a lawsuit alleging that its voice assistant Siri routinely recorded private conversations that were then sold to third parties for targeted ads.

@kim_harding
I experimented with Siri for a few days when it first came out several years ago, decided it was junk, then switched it off. #Privacy nightmares like this one are another reason why I would never switch Siri (or any other "assistant") back on. #tech

There is almost zero chance that very wealthy private individuals aren't buying this data to stalk wives, mistresses, kids, enemies, and would-be romantic partners.

@GossiTheDog The sheriff's claim that "the vehicle was locked due to the nature of the force from the explosion" makes it sound like the explosion deformed parts of the car and caused the door to jam, but obviously that's not the case, since the car could be unlocked remotely.

Chris

@GossiTheDog I'm surprised people are surprised at this. I'm disappointed in Tesla for rolling over and acceding to Spacekaren's demand, as it opens them up to legal problems regardless of how long he's on sleepover with DJT

Ever feel like you're always on camera? Just mapped a route through the city and counted surveillance cameras along the way. It's wild how many there are! 📸🗺️

Trained image generators kind of ruined my life, or at least ruined my ability to generate freelance income as an illustrator. So when I block your account for its contant stream of bland, wasteful imagery (where literally ANY original version would be more charming) it's not an irrational act of anger just a simple move towards self-preservation and mental health.

I am not an illustrator but normally I block any account that use of or speak well about these technology for the same reasons. We should be many.

Even beyond just the ethical reasons, AI slop just looks so unsettling to me.

I can't help but notice all the weird details that are off. Then, once I notice them, they get weirder and weider the more I look.

I've tried pointing that out to people who I see routinely posting AI slop like, "Hey, do you notice how in that picture you posted, Santa's gloves look like they might have fingernails, but in a really unsettling, subtle way that makes it so you're never quite sure?"

That sure as hell would make me seriously reconsider using that kind of garbage if it were me, but nope. Ended up having to mute them.

For 2025 I think we should just ignore every "AI did this thing" report that does not explicitly state the resource cost (energy/CO2 for training and inference, hardware requirements/e-waste). We just cannot afford burning the planet for technological parlor tricks.

@tante

I gave my freshman in Public Health instructions to record and share their use of AI and, since it's a quantitative subject, calculate their personal contribution energy use. Most of them just didn't use it so they wouldn't have to calculate the numbers which I'll call a win!

@tante I’ll add “Build by a human without AI” to the description of my next app. We need a badge for this.

Wikipedia is a problem for Musk/Trump. Not, as Musk says, because it's "woke." Because it's one of our last reliable tethers to a consensus reality. Therefore, an antidote to disinformation.

It's not making anyone money. It's not enshittified. Of course it's not perfect—it's an endeavor of imperfect cooperating humans. But it needs protection and support.

@gleick Elon Musk is a psychopathic idiot... who happens to be completely right about #Wikipedia.

Many parts of Wikipedia are ideological echo chambers with no connection to reality, and could not possibly be any farther away from being the impartial, scientific, politically neutral source of information that it claims to be.

The only information on Wikipedia that can perhaps be trusted to some degree is information that is entirely removed from any and all politics. As soon as politics touches upon a topic, forget about impartial information on Wikipedia, because there is a serious risk that you will be presented with high-quality, convincing propaganda.

That means: Anything related to history, biographies of people who ever had any kind of political controversy about them (i.e. not only politicians), descriptions of political ideologies and viewpoints, world conflicts, anything related to sociology and psychology... Even parts of IT, like when it comes to the GNU/Linux naming controversy and the like.

On top of that, many of the donations to "Wikipedia" do not in fact go to Wikipedia at all.

You are donating to Wikimedia Foundation, which uses part of the donations to run and develop the servers of Wikipedia and related sites and infrastructure (like mediawiki.org), but a lot of the funds go to various political projects instead.

The editors on Wikipedia are unpaid (which also makes them unaccountable to some degree) and even the software, MediaWiki, is developed to a large extent by Free Software developers who are unpaid.

I intend to soon add some information to mediawiki.org on how to host a highly efficient MesiaWiki server using nothing but Nginx for front-end caching, and nobody is going to pay me for doing that. (I host a wiki with millions of visitors per day.)

@gleick Musk+Trump is a problem for humanity

JBouchez

@gleick totally with that! I was a wikimedian in residence here in Montréal and since then, I've been a strong supporter of Wikipedia and the Wikipedia Foundation. I'm pretty sure they will attack the Foundation and dream of taking control of the organization.
