For 2025 I think we should just ignore every "AI did this thing" report that does not explicitly state the resource cost (energy/CO2 for training and inference, hardware requirements/e-waste). We just cannot afford burning the planet for technological parlor tricks.

@tante What is with the American English in Europe? Did we do something to offend you?

@humanhorseshoes @tante Create a duolingo course with London dialect and we might forgive you. :blobcathuh:

Human after all

@MuffelKanuffel @tante From now on only Namibian German, Indonesian Dutch and Caribbean French allowed in the EU. Because of Brexit

Human after all

@MuffelKanuffel@troet.cafe @tante@tldr.nettime.org I have been told once too often that "you're not in the EU and your English is bad" so the rest of the EU can get fucked

@humanhorseshoes @tante other than Brexit, and American English spelling mostly making more sense? (I prefer “travelled” over “traveled”, though.)

@tante

Agree. Every parlour trick 'AI did this thing' should include the external costs so that the total costs (& benefits, if any) van be compared.
Thx for suggesting this. 🙂

@tante Add in ignoring every AI excrescence that does not credit every word it outputs to the human author it was stolen from & I'm with you

@tante Need to compare the climate impact of AI to a 4 hour flight on a commercial jet and an Elon Musk jet flight from CA to Florida.

Nini

@tante That could be done, it'd most likely be underestimating given the costs are fuzziest nearest the edges but at least it'd be open about the rough amount of energy use involved.

@tante Can't speak for US consumers, but in EU (and UK), make it mandatory for every GenAI image to report, in your words, "energy/CO2 for training and inference, hardware requirements/e-waste".

Then when someone posts the inevitable AI pic, that info should be coded into the metadata and alt-txt.

Satan - Paul

@tante that in the end don't even work even as half as well as real life people

@tante not to worry. We will use AI to measure the carbon footprint from AI. github.com/sustainable-computi

Mycotropic

@tante

I gave my freshman in Public Health instructions to record and share their use of AI and, since it's a quantitative subject, calculate their personal contribution energy use. Most of them just didn't use it so they wouldn't have to calculate the numbers which I'll call a win!

@tante except my solar powered 7900XTX. That's legit

@tante I’ll add “Build by a human without AI” to the description of my next app. We need a badge for this.
