Wikipedia is a problem for Musk/Trump. Not, as Musk says, because it's "woke." Because it's one of our last reliable tethers to a consensus reality. Therefore, an antidote to disinformation.

It's not making anyone money. It's not enshittified. Of course it's not perfectโ€”it's an endeavor of imperfect cooperating humans. But it needs protection and support.

@gleick I contributed some of my money to Wikipedia this month. I agree with you about its good works.

SnowshadowII :maple:

@gleick Download Wiki now before Musk and trump destroy it.

Tarmo Amer

@SnowshadowII @gleick Wikipedia is a living document. It evolves and changes as the human understanding of the world evolves and changes. Downloading Wikipedia, imho, would be a bit like downloading a weather forecast.

SnowshadowII :maple:

@tarmoamer @gleick

I am aware it is ever evolving and it will continue as such unless Trump and Elon have their way. Americans need to prepare for the worst.
Yes, wiki could continue in other countries, however if US dictator wannabes have their was the internet will be heavily censored

Christian Pietsch

@SnowshadowII @gleick

If this was a serious suggestion, please don't scrape the Wikipedia website.

Torrent the dump instead: meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Data_d

Or get @kiwix and download a ZIM file containing the Wikipedia in the language of your choice.

SnowshadowII :maple:

@chpietsch @gleick @kiwix

Not suggesting scraping so thanks for these suggestions. Good advice for everyone!!๐Ÿ‘

Not a techie here, so if this is a dumb question, forgive me.
Wouldn't you need a LOT of bytes to download all of Wikipedia? Like significantly more than my computer has available?

SnowshadowII :maple:

@Darkphoenix @gleick

NOT a silly question. (there are NO silly tech questions)

Here's the solution:

fedifreu.de/@chpietsch/1137104

ETA: and if you don't understand how to ...send out an S.O>S to all the techies on fedi using the Tech and Fediverse and computer hashtags--someone is sure to reply

AriSunDog, Spooky Version!

@SnowshadowII @Darkphoenix @gleick thank you. This is one reason why I have been buying more books lately. I'm just getting to collecting the reference books that I want to have. This will definitely go into my files.

SnowshadowII :maple:

@Darkphoenix @gleick
Unlike most people here, I am really bad with providing verbal instructions, I am more of a "here, let me show you using hands on" teacher, I am sorry. But if you give a shout out to Fedivers someone will explain it better, in the meantime...
Here's an explanation to start:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BitTorre

SnowshadowII :maple:

@Darkphoenix @gleick
You're welcome.

You still download it but using torrent prevents a massive traffic jam on the internet

SnowshadowII :maple:

@martin_fff Edited to add: Perhaps you might be interested in adding US and tech hashtags to your reply?

__________
Thank you. ๐Ÿ˜€ @Darkphoenix @gleick

@SnowshadowII @gleick and the volume is shared over several nodes. So kinda similar to block chains

SnowshadowII :maple:

@Darkphoenix
And you can purchase external hard drives (get an SSD- they are sturdy) for less than $100 dollars. Prices are scaled to how much data you want to store) they come with the cord and just plug it in --works like your computer internal hard drive.

@gleick

Western Infidels

@Darkphoenix @SnowshadowII @gleick The Wikipedia dumps everyone's talking about here are text-only, no images.

As a result, the files are smaller than one might expect; under 30GB. Smaller than a Windows OS install, smaller than most triple-A games. Would fit on a modern smartphone easily. My local computer store often hands out USB drives bigger than that for free.

So the data is safe enough, many copies can be made. It's the social network Wikipedia creates and is created by that's vulnerable.

argv minus one

@Darkphoenix

No, you can actually easily fit its text on a hard disk or SSD. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedi

There are some websites backed by data far too large for one computer to manage (commonly called โ€œbig dataโ€), but Wikipedia is, somewhat surprisingly, not one of them.

Although all the images and videos and such add to its size. Not sure how large those all are.

@gleick

It's particularly concerning given the part of Project 2025 that takes aims at non-profits and seeks to give the government the authority to take away a non-profit's status due to "supporting terrorism" which is a term with no meaningful definition associated with it.

So if, for example, conservatives label a human rights movement like BLM "terrorist" and wikipedia simply doesn't host right-wing misinformation about the group the GOP could define that as "support for terrorist groups"

AskPippa๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ

@gleick
"Wikipedia has long faced accusations of bias from both sides of the political spectrum." Both sides? Actually that means balance -- overall. I just gave them an extra donation for this year, and upped the amount. #wikipedia.

myrmepropagandist

@gleick

I didn't donate to The Wikipedia for years. Because I wrote so many articles for them and thought that was an unpleasant experience* in some ways and more than enough free labor for me.

But last year I relented and started a donation and this makes me think it was a good idea after all.

It's decent enough and THAT is becoming rare online.

myrmepropagandist

@gleick

Oh how nice it would be were they "woke" at all.

They're just not... deeply broken.

@futurebird @gleick but still the best yet that hopefully all LLMs are breastfed with

Tim Richards

@futurebird @gleick I've been donating about twice a year - I get a lot of use from it, more so now every other source has been enshittified.

myrmepropagandist

@gleick

If it's not clear I think it's a good idea to donate to them if:

1. You use it.
2. You can.
3. You care at all if they continue to exist.

Now's a nice moment to start. It will bolster confidence in the face of these public attacks. You can always check in later when the winds shift and stop the donations later.

cobalt

@futurebird @gleick I started donating 2-3 years ago. Small amounts โ€œone timeโ€. I figured I likely use it an average of 3/4 times a day! Itโ€™s indispensable in some interest areas. Geology and rocks/minerals.

Toni Aittoniemi

@futurebird @gleick I really wish I could!

Due to legislative issues in my country, it is not possible for Wikimedia Foundation to collect donations from here.

And we have a right-wing goverment with some Maga-symphatizers in power right now, too.. ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

@futurebird @gleick Please note that as of six months ago the Wikimedia Foundation had over $270 million in net assets.
There's also an endowment worth over $140 million.
Also, according to the most recent IRS Form 990, the CEO makes over $500k per year.
Arguably they don't need your support, and there are other worthy charities that very much do.

@jik @gleick

That's good. If they can get a boost in donations they could pad that a little more. It's nice that their finances are transparent, isn't it?

That's a decent endowment but not as much as it seems for one of the most popular websites on the internet in the whole world.

You've brought this up before, but I do not agree that we don't need to worry about the first and most common source that people use globally.

I don't think we should be that naive.

myrmepropagandist

@jik @gleick

500K is a fat paycheck, but it is not obscene. Maybe we can complain at them and get it down to 250k but any less than that wouldn't be reasonable.

I'm not exactly an uncritical fan of The Wikipedia at all.

But come on.

Michael T. Bacon, Ph.D.

@futurebird @jik @gleick

Right, people get salty about six figure salaries and the obscene reality is that thatโ€™s logarithmically closer to the poverty line than the income of most Fortune 500 CEOs.

myrmepropagandist

@MichaelTBacon @jik @gleick

I'm all for finding someone to do the job for maybe a third less. That's part of the oversight they live with and that's good.

Too many things have no such oversight.

Think of a 22 million dollar salary, and that dwarfed by stock options and who knows what else self dealing.

Jonathan Kamens

@MichaelTBacon @futurebird @gleick I personally don't think it's particularly useful to compare anyone's salaries to those of Fortune 500 CEOs, logarithmically or otherwise. I find it more instructive to compare them to the rest of the country, the people who aren't blessed with Fortune 500 CEO incomes.
A $500k salary puts someone in the 98th percentile, i.e., they're making more money than 98% of the population. They're not quite in "the 1%," but they're closer than 98% of Americans.

Jonathan Kamens

@futurebird @gleick I haven't brought this up before, so I think perhaps you're confusing me with someone else.
They've got ~1.5 years worth of operating expenses in the bank. If their finances get worse we'll have plenty of time to donate then. Whereas trans and abortion rescue organizations e.g. are desperate for cash _now_.
The pleas for donations that display constantly on the site, which don't mention their huge cash reserves, don't seem particularly transparent to me.

myrmepropagandist

@jik @gleick

The only non-profits that are durable and get things done have big endowments. It is the correct way to operate.

Jonathan Kamens

@futurebird @gleick ๐Ÿคท if you are aware of how much money Wikipedia has in the bank and you want to donate to help them grow their endowment, sure.
I brought it up because I think people deserve the transparency you mentioned, and (as I said) I don't think Wikipedia is proactively transparent about this.
Personally, my charity dollars will go to orgs that are much more desperate and whose work more directly impact people's literal survival under a fascist regime.

Stu

@futurebird @jik @gleick you know, if Musk is potentially going after them, a couple of hundred million feels like it could melt away fairly quickly in a big lawsuit. It's a lot of money, but it's not "one of the most visited websites in the world" lot of money, especially when you look at the others.

I think I'll start donating again.

DerangedCrone

@futurebird @gleick I donate every year, and love that they remind me. Wikipedia rules.

Wyatt (๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€โšง๏ธโ™€?)

@gleick not meant to truly burst this bubble because i mostly agree, but sometimes wikipedia 'consensus' isn't truly consensus.
changing to the vector 2022 theme for instance, was done after consensus failed to be reached without attempting to reach consensus again, citing that they'd "made changes to fix the criticisms" - and then they required actual consensus to revert to the old skin.

"Wikipedia was more likely to portray right-leaning figures negatively than their left-leaning counterparts."
Is that because they are more likely to be *#&@%!s

@gleick This is honestly a better advertisement for me donating to Wikipedia than any of these banners has ever been.
Erika

@gleick @mardor I think it's about time to make a donation to #wikipedia

PrinceOfDenmark

@gleick #Give to #Wikipedia. How much? Until it feels good. Theyโ€™re going to need all of it if this bunch rally the #trolls against them.

@gleick @Fragarach

Bollocks! I've been ignoring those annoying pop-ups, but if Evil Dusk wants rid of it, I'll set up a recurring donation.

malte

@gleick Greatest encouragement for me to start donating to Wikipedia, if there ever was one.

Funny enough, Elon obviously fears the "public" he is trying to agitate...

"The New York Times reported in September that Musk's security apparatus has grown significantly as he has become more well-known and outspoken. He travels with many as 20 security professionals, who often carry guns and have a medical professional in tow, according to the newspaper."

You know you disgruntled too many people, if you need an army to protect you.

gunstick

@gleick I bet next move will be that he blocks wikipedia on his starlink network.

Stefan

@gleick New lows each day. Making a note fo stepping up my wikipedia donations.

Of the famous instigators of web platforms, Jimmy Wales (Wikipedia), Brewster Kahle and Bruce Gilliat (Internet Archive/Way back Machine), stand high above the others who are money grabbing hollow men.

@gleick This is the only news which made me donate to Wikipedia today, for the first time. I hope some kind of Streisand effect.

Nomad@trustbutverify

@gleick

I've just setup a monthly donation to #Wikipedia

I encourage everyone to do it too - it feels great ๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ’ช

Even a small amount such as $2 / month, multiplied by hundreds of thousands of people, will defeat fascists.

Together, WE are stronger, wealthier and more powerful than psychopaths like Musk.

Whisper of Reason

@gleick I look something up in Wikipedia almost every day now - much more often than, say, 10 years ago. It's an island of actual facts-based information in the vast ocean of uneducated opinions and outright lies.

Musk's hatred towards it is utterly unsurprising, and it further confirms that Wikipedia is a good thing.

Doerk

@gleick Itโ€™s important to preserve these places of goodness, where the dark prince has no power. Itโ€™s up to us to protect them.

Alastair

@gleick Just donated. Thanks for boosting.

@gleick consensus doesnโ€™t define reality. Just because you agree with something doesnโ€™t make it true. If there is a bias in consensus, then it is just group think. There is well established studies that Wikipedia does lean. You canโ€™t completely discount the leftโ€™s argument just because you donโ€™t agree with it. There is a growing rift in community and consensus on whatโ€™s true. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Consen

One of the few good things data centers might be used for is to archive all the stuff GOP wants to remove from public access.

@gleick let's use the same language to describe Wikipedia as the MAGA churches use to describe their leader: 'an imperfect vessel' to 'navigate in chaos'. <sarcasm>

@gleick Elon Musk is a psychopathic idiot... who happens to be completely right about #Wikipedia.

Many parts of Wikipedia are ideological echo chambers with no connection to reality, and could not possibly be any farther away from being the impartial, scientific, politically neutral source of information that it claims to be.

The only information on Wikipedia that can perhaps be trusted to some degree is information that is entirely removed from any and all politics. As soon as politics touches upon a topic, forget about impartial information on Wikipedia, because there is a serious risk that you will be presented with high-quality, convincing propaganda.

That means: Anything related to history, biographies of people who ever had any kind of political controversy about them (i.e. not only politicians), descriptions of political ideologies and viewpoints, world conflicts, anything related to sociology and psychology... Even parts of IT, like when it comes to the GNU/Linux naming controversy and the like.

On top of that, many of the donations to "Wikipedia" do not in fact go to Wikipedia at all.

You are donating to Wikimedia Foundation, which uses part of the donations to run and develop the servers of Wikipedia and related sites and infrastructure (like mediawiki.org), but a lot of the funds go to various political projects instead.

The editors on Wikipedia are unpaid (which also makes them unaccountable to some degree) and even the software, MediaWiki, is developed to a large extent by Free Software developers who are unpaid.

I intend to soon add some information to mediawiki.org on how to host a highly efficient MesiaWiki server using nothing but Nginx for front-end caching, and nobody is going to pay me for doing that. (I host a wiki with millions of visitors per day.)
