"The richest 1 percent have amassed $42 trillion in new #wealth over the past decade, nearly 34 times more than the entire bottom 50 percent of the world’s population, according to new analysis by #Oxfam".

@ilumium

the crazy thing, almost all of it is a private credit asset bubble. it will only take the right global supply train Janga piece to pop it all.

Hint: Watch this spot for insurance default!

Funny, that’s about the amount of money we need to address the #ClimateCrisis globally.

Looks like the timing could not have been better for that metal Les Mis part of the #OpeningCeremony.

Good job #Paris2024 reminding them that there are worse fates than the big boogieman they see in the taxman. #TaxTheRich

PSA:
Scammers are targeting people's MyGov accounts.
I just received email that said I'm locked-out of my MyGov account.
If you receive email like this, do not click on a link! If the email came from a scammer, they'll try to trick you into giving your password.
Instead, to the MyGov website, try to login, and if necessary do a password reset. Then go the the "My Account" section and make sure you have 2 Factor Authentication configured.

Presumably, a scammer got my email address and tried to login with it, and after failing a few times the system locked my account. All sorted-out now.

With the #MastodonForHarris fundraiser approaching $300,000 (!), I thought I'd say a little about why I am going to keep it going, most likely all the way through Inauguration Day. 1/

@alemppu @tomw Be careful, you'll get those nerds properly riled up by using "luddite" as a slur! There's a very good analogy here that I don't think you meant, but luddites *were* technologists, they were the ones building the auto-looms, improving them, etc. it wasn't technology they were objecting to, it was the fact that unions were illegal and they were being told that their comfortable well-paid work from home jobs now had to come into a factory floor for a 10th of the pay.

Sam Whited

@alemppu @tomw TL;DR they didn't hate the technology, they hated how it was being developed in the name of "progress" with no consideration for the externalities or how it would affect actual people. Sound familiar? :)

Iivana Lemmetyinen

@sam @tomw Umm... I'm a total nerd and an out and proud luddite myself.

And yes, the exact point is who controls the development of technics and tools and what is their effect to peoples and communities.

Thomas Sobieck 🐘

@sam @alemppu @tomw I was about to get riled up about this. Margaret Killjoy did an excellent episode on the Luddites on Cool People Who Did Cool Stuff

@benno holy shit thank you I just went to check my overseas registration - which I thought was set to continue indefinitely - and discovered it expired one and a half years ago. Have now renewed for… “four more years (!)”

Hey USA friends: Go check your voter registration. Even if you're not in a state that is being shitty about its voter rolls. Just do it because you're cool like that.

TIL that the first wind turbine was introduced in 1887 by a Scot called James Blyth. He offered to power the street lights of the village of Marykirk, near Aberdeen, using his 33ft turbine – the villagers refused and called it “the work of the devil.”

What would a Kamala Harris presidency mean for the climate? Grist takes a look at her record in California, the Senate and the White House, and statements she's made in the past. "We must do more,” Harris said at last years' COP28. “Our action collectively, or worse, our inaction will impact billions of people for decades to come.”

My own preferred solution: leave the fucking things turned off. Stop giving computers to people who shouldn’t have them. Smash the looms. You didn’t need a smartphone anyway, it’s been nothing but hassle. Go outside. Smash the looms. Look at the birds. Meet your neighbours. Smash the looms.

Smash. The looms.
