I had no idea this exists. Website that searches all the physical locations of lots of retailers to answer the question: “which of your stores has the product I want to buy?” bunnings.youinstock.com.au/sea

@bigjsl when I was living in OZ I used isinstock.com to get notified about Apple products being in stock.

@bigjsl
I just wish retailers would let me search what's in stock at a particular store.

i.e. is it worth going to store X to look at all/most of the stuff I want ... without having to search item by item which store has stock.

Just read about #elastocalorics for the first time - this is an exciting new technology that could revolutionise space heating & cooling. Very interesting.

Edit: boosting my own toot because I've gotten no response from OP and seen *yet another* well meaning person I follow boosting this ⬆️

@SrRochardBunson I don't want to yuck your yum, but I also don't want well-meaning people wasting their energy and hopes spinning their wheels when they can instead be taking direct action. This is not at all an accurate understanding of non-profit tax law or prohibited political activity irs.gov/charities-non-profits/

What a fantastic way to describe gas vs #solar electric for transportation.

“If you grow an acre of corn, it will produce 900 gallons of ethanol, which will get you about 25,000 miles for a Ford F-150 pickup,” says Carson. “Which is, not bad I guess. But let’s say we put solar on that same acre. It will produce enough electricity every year to drive my Lightning 550,000 miles.”

The entire article is here billmckibben.substack.com/p/fo

@human3500 Also you could still produce food since solar doesn't have to be installed on prime agriculture land.

Captain Dragonfrog Queernabs

@human3500 not to mention fuel ethanol from corn literally requires more fossil fuel input for farm equipment and fertilizer and whatnot, than the output of fuel you get in the end.

It just exists as a mechanism to absorb government subsidies.

Pedestriansfirst

@human3500 You could always just grow food on the land and just walk! #justwalk

These films were good but not great.
The previous films were great — in my opinion film-of-the-year — so I was expecting greatness.
They had an excellent cast.
They had an excellent Director.
They got crew who worked on the previous film back together.
They had gorgeous cinematography.
They had beautiful visual effects and action.
They had thoroughly developed world-building.

And yet...

Putting together pieces of a great film doesn't necessarily make a great film.
Their scripts didn't gel.
Character-arcs were notably light-weight or absent.
Moral messages didn't land.
They lacked a convincing reason for emotional engagement with main characters or supporting characters.

They needed a reason for the audience to give a shit, to feel the risk, tension, sacrifices paid for pivotal decisions, and feel the triumph. Without that, where's the payoff?

*sigh*

@DamienWise well said!!

Dave

@aimee Nicely done. I'm wondering if there are any sites which go into area detail rather than city detail - none of the cities they have listed are "no dry season, cold summer" like Invervegas.

Kudra :maybe_verified:

@aimee very clever, but it kindof minimises the reality of climate refugees likely by that time, in that it doesn't comment on the fact that many of these cities will already be fairly unliveable by 2070 due to more frequent extreme sea level events let alone baseline sea level rise, even if their climate is comparable to other cities with a harsher climate currently

the 4 types of national anthems:

- Gosh, This Sure is an Attractive Piece of Land We've Got Here

- That One War in Particular was a Doozy

- We Only Sing Parts of This Song Now Because the Other Verses are Racist

- We Speak French and We Will Fucking Kill You

@VeryBadLlama reporting live from a number 3 country

Chookbot

@VeryBadLlama Having gone through several national anthems as a 72 yr old Australian, I can confirm this.

At this point in time we have Type 3. An awful colonialist dirge called "Advance Australia". We had to change the word "young" to "one" to make the first verse acceptable and we don't sing the second verse at all because that's where the racism starts.

I loved hearing this interview today.

And it rang especially true for someone like me, who’s done so many different things previously, and will in future. (That being said, I definitely know what I’m meant to be doing now…)

Here’s to next adventures, the flexibility adapt, and the courage to try new things :)

So a couple of weeks back I was riding my bike and saw the friendly face of a former customer/colleague at an intersection and waved. He messaged a few days later suggesting a drink, which we have just had.

And we get on famously, talked shit and serious stuff for two hours. He's a little older than me. We might both be asking ourselves about adult ADHD, and thinking about our lives, and wondering how the fuck we got here. As we reconnected and it became apparent we are both fatherless now, he posed the question: who replaces them in our lives? We are both short on older men we can talk to now, the repositories of wisdom we can connect with are few and hard to find... and the answer is, it's us. Our peers. We are now the last numerous generation. (As my older and old friend Matt observed when my dad died: the world is a little colder when you're an orphan. The buffer generation between us and death is gone.)

And he's been having a few problems but honestly who hasn't, I know I have. It's good to start mapping out our common territory.

And I thought about my Dad who when he died had such a tiny circle because his friendships had revolved around work, and my mother did all the social stuff. His last good friends were actually all my mother's old friends.

And all this is to say, my fellow ageing straight dudes: don't miss that chance to connect. Go talk shit. Take a chance on someone who may or may not share something of how you see the world (and what if they don't? maybe you can learn something from that or at least have fun being surprised). We can't leave it to the women in our lives, it's not their responsibility and we could do with exercising the ancient muscles of friendship. See what happens. Could be good. Give it a go.

🔥 The symmetry of this turn in the air! 🔥
Yellow Warblers (Setophaga petechia) are small, agile birds known for their stunning ‘circle flight’ during nest-building.
These little guys perform a semi-circular flight to mark their territory.

I've been using my electric converted '76 Kawasaki motorcycle for all of my in town errands since I got it running again about a month ago. This was a grocery store run. Got my usual two bags of groceries that last me 2-3 weeks. ($46 at Winco. I buy 98% vegetables & bulk products.) I estimate that this 18 mile round trip run cost me ~$0.13 (~1kWh) in electricity. I only drive my car when I make out-of-town runs. Haven't started it since Father's Day when I went to the Powwow in Carson City.

@elaterite Love the flux capacitor. BTW did you buy this ‘76 mod or upgrade it yourself?

Internet (n.): A global communications network popular from ca 1980 to ca 2036. From 2025 onward, misguided efforts to restrict children and teenagers from access to so-called “Social Media” led to emergence of The Mesh whose truly social— grassroots, decentralized and block-resistant—paradigm rapidly eclipsed Internet in the under-16 demographic. Initially an underground network whose very existence spread by word of mouth, by the time the Mesh Generation reached adulthood mesh usage outstripped Internet, and the following decade saw Internet usage crash, arguably leading to the Great Depression of the 2030s.
