Mastodon is the world's biggest community of people who deeply love computers and also think that the world would probably be better off without computers

@tomw Some of the most fervent technology hating luddites I've seen has been total nerds.

Seems like half of the folks in an anarcho-primitivist camp back in the days worked as programmers.

Like folks were tanning hides and talking about how PHP totally sucks.

Sam Whited

@alemppu @tomw Be careful, you'll get those nerds properly riled up by using "luddite" as a slur! There's a very good analogy here that I don't think you meant, but luddites *were* technologists, they were the ones building the auto-looms, improving them, etc. it wasn't technology they were objecting to, it was the fact that unions were illegal and they were being told that their comfortable well-paid work from home jobs now had to come into a factory floor for a 10th of the pay.

Sam Whited

@alemppu @tomw TL;DR they didn't hate the technology, they hated how it was being developed in the name of "progress" with no consideration for the externalities or how it would affect actual people. Sound familiar? :)

Clutha๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ณ๓ ฃ๓ ด๓ ฟ

@sam @alemppu @tomw
The best ideas for doing things better come from the shop floor. Sadly if adopted management/owners take the glory & extra income. โ€˜Twas ever thus.

Iivana Lemmetyinen

@Clutha @sam @tomw One of my friends worked at the shop floor and they found out a way to improve the process, but of course no one listened to the blue collar goofs.

So when a young engineer started in their shop they told him to propose that as his own idea. Bosses were delighted that the new kid got immediately to improve the process and guys at the machines were just happy that they finally got to do the work as it should be done.

The cost of bad management is staggering.

Iivana Lemmetyinen

@sam @tomw Umm... I'm a total nerd and an out and proud luddite myself.

And yes, the exact point is who controls the development of technics and tools and what is their effect to peoples and communities.

Sam Whited

@alemppu @tomw my apologies then; let us convene the tribunal and smash some AI's and shit!

Thomas Sobieck ๐Ÿ˜

@sam @alemppu @tomw I was about to get riled up about this. Margaret Killjoy did an excellent episode on the Luddites on Cool People Who Did Cool Stuff

pca.st/episode/f2706d25-f0fe-4

Sam Whited

@Sobieck @alemppu @tomw oooh, thanks for the recommendation, I'll give it a listen!

Unattributed ๐Ÿ‘ค โ˜‘

@alemppu @tomw This comment is just so funny -- and hit me really hard... I've gotten heavily into leather boots over the past couple of years (down to understanding the differences in leather tanning processes), while considering which programming language I should learn (since I've been out of it for so long).

Jonathan Lamothe
@alemppu @tomw Some people dislike technology because they don't understand it. I dislike it because I do.
Landsil

@tomw
Don't get me wrong, I would like an omnipotent, benevolent AGI from Asimov's stories to rule the planet.
But until we get there I would appreciate it if companies would stop showing crappy LLM's and ML into every system imaginable.

Ozzelot :anarchy: :linux:

@Landsil @tomw I would like the planet to not be ruled, but rather respected. But that's just me.

Phracker

@Landsil @tomw AI is just the current "thing", much like crypto and NFTs in 2021-2022. That's why every company has to shove it in people's faces 24/7. They follow the hype and don't ask questions.

Landsil

@Phracker2Art @tomw
Oh no, I managed to forget about NFTs, don't bring that fever dream up.

I actually think AI is much worse than the previous two combined.
On the face of it, it doesn't seem like an obvious scam like the previous two and it's often free to use.
People get used to vaguely horny, vaguely incorrect GPT answers and suddenly think that it's a good idea to use it at work.
I had no coworkers asking about using crypto for work, but bloody AI is constantly coming up for the stupidest of reasons.

Phracker

@Landsil @tomw That's because people don't understand what AI is and think it's a magic bullet that can solve any problem.

Landsil

@amin @tomw
There are few stories where 3 AI run the whole planet and the worst that happens is that few people who are against are moved to less amazing positions to be less able to complain.

People that discovered that kind of shrug and don't tell anyone because they decide it makes sense for the benefits of humanity.

I think in the end decades later AI's slowly disable themselves after deciding that their existence is slowing humanity down or something.

I don't remember the title so I guess I have to binge all of his books again as soon as I'm done with Horus Heresy.

@amin @tomw

@Landsil @tomw

Been a while since I've read those specific stories so I guess I've forgotten how those ones turned out.

tuban_muzuru

@tomw

... oh I don't know.. Computers have uses: for warming cats' asses.

Gik :prami:

@tuban_muzuru pretty sure that would make a My Favorite Things lyric.

poetaster

@tuban_muzuru well, today, i used the exhaust from my thinkpad to soften the gluegun glue i had used to fasten some wires on a sata hd. I just extrapolated from that :-)

tuban_muzuru

@poetaster

Ingenious. All those hideous ethylene-vinyl acetates and their isomeric inbred cousins, a polyester here, a acrylate there....

poetaster

The hd is a musical unstiment. A sort of computing tooter.

Martin

@tomw I'm a nerd about hosting my servers and using open source software, but I shock people around me when I tell them that I ain't got Instagram, Facebook, Twitter or whatever mainstream social networks you can name. I do have LinkedIn, but only to have a public profile that people can search.
My smartphone is also stripped to the bearbones minimum of what I need to live in a digital society.
And it's exactly because I'm an IT guy and I know what's shady, that I stay away from it.

Six Grandfathers Mountain

@tomw
@mrtn
RE
people are shocked that I ain't got Instagram, Facebook, Twitter or #msm

I get this a lot too, because they never heard of #Mastodon
or #Telegram

I guess those folks don't know what K Dude said,

๐Ÿค”@Kdude
Now it's just noise, trolls, bots, ads, branded content, tracking, right-wing extremists, etc. ๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ

undead enby of the apocalypse

@tomw @6G @mrtn @Kdude
I get that tooโ€ฆ
why telegram and not signal btw?

Kแ‘แ‘Œแ‘แ•ฎ

@tomw @Gargron > โ€œpeople who deeply love computersโ€

โ€ฆheh, that reminded me of how Twitter started long ago ๐Ÿค”

Hylke ๐Ÿต

@tomw hesitated to retoot this because the counter was at 64โ€ฆ ๐Ÿ˜†

tschenkel

@tomw

That's so true (at least from my PoV).

But then, that's not too dissimilar to the original Luddites.

So, if anybody calls me a Luddite, I take that as a compliment.

EndlessMason

@tomw
Maybe just a little computer? 16bit at most.

Tom Walker

@EndlessMason I'm just about happy with this but maybe I can push you to a 386?

econads

@tomw @MercG
Love might be a bit of a strong word. Rely on them to make a good living in an interesting way and recognise they underpin the modern world yes.

Stoneface Vimes

@tomw the Venn would be almost a circle

PaulaToThePeople

@tomw I don't just feel like that about computers, but also about humans[big asterix].

*I definitely don't mean we should get rid of us. Just that the world would be better off, if we never evolutionized. Now that we exist, we should absolutely try to keep it that way.

๐ŸŒฟMouse-Friend๐ŸŒฟ

@tomw We've found, anecdotally, that the most vocal and well reasoned arguments against including computers anywhere at all, come from programmers, engineers, and others you may consider "experts".

We know exactly how fragile and Bad these systems are, and have no illusions as to how easily they can, will, and do collapse entirely.

Hamish The PolarBear

@tomw May I suggest that there is a significant subset who would say it would be better off without computers built on post-1980s CPUs.

Ade

@tomw Speaking as someone who's worked in IT for over 25 years I still prefer to use a pencil and paper

AmicusOpus

@tomw

I feel like I might distrust connectivity more than computers.

Should I delete my account? (lolz)

Fietsbel

@tomw Maybe you include more people (also myself), if you replace โ€œdeeply loveโ€ by โ€œlikeโ€ and โ€œcomputersโ€ by โ€œsocial mediaโ€ - to which Mastodon belongs. And that was your issue. - Only some people on the spectrum (or the like) โ€œdeeply loveโ€ computers.

Tom Walker

@Fietsbel โ€œWhen I use a word,โ€ Humpty Dumpty said in rather a scornful tone, โ€œit means just what I choose it to meanโ€”neither more nor less.โ€

Steffen VoรŸ

@tomw The problem is always the business model. People here think, computers would be great, if they weren't corrupted by big tech's business models.

๐Ÿ’ก๐š‚๐—†๐–บ๐—‹๐—๐—†๐–บ๐—‡ ๐™ฐ๐—‰๐—‰๐—Œ๐Ÿ“ฑ

@kaffeeringe @tomw
Yeah I was going to say that computers aren't the problem, how they're programmed by some is the issue. Sometimes it's the programmer themselves (lazy attitude towards making the code robust), sometimes it's management (I need it yesterday - no, I don't care if it's not ready), and sometimes the top person (we want engagement, engagement, engagement). GIGO.

Bsan3

@tomw computers are just amplifying the lack of any media laws on what is "news"

John Mastodone indeed!

@tomw without Microsoft Windows, not computers. We can make use of BSD and Linux

Maria Langer | ๐Ÿ›ฅ๏ธ ๐Ÿ“ ๐ŸŽฌ๐Ÿš

@tomw @Hudson Itโ€™s the connectivity that bothers me, especially when itโ€™s โ€œrequiredโ€œ for operation.

Itโ€™s funny, but I can use Affinity Photo on my Mac without even being connected to the Internet. Try that with an Adobe product.

CodeByJeff - Now with AI!

@tomw same with beer

'course I'm drunk, so ignore this

Fco Javier Casas Ciria

@tomw @halama_immuno
More than 15 years ago I installed Linux and messed around a lot on the computer. It opened up many opportunities in using a computer. Now, with no time to dedicate time to IT, I occasionally require the service of the hospital's IT specialist. For me, computing is not an end like it is for some Nerds. My purpose is clinical microbiology and I use a tool that requires maintenance by a specialist.

Javi Polo

@tomw My 5 cents here is that we don't think the world would be better without computers, but without computers that can be operated using other ways than console commands.

(Matthew)=> return ๐Ÿณโ€๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐ŸŽฎ๐Ÿ’ป๐Ÿ“–

@javipoloxyz @tomw Maybe I'm a know-nothing-normie but GUIs are good and fine actually, the stuff that sucks about tech is like, the manufacturers also collecting data on us and adding features that will be vestigial in two months but marketing or a suit said to include it.

Also printers. Printers suck.

Javi Polo

@mdstevens0612 @tomw In fact I'm all-in into GUIs, I mean, I do some UI design for a living ๐Ÿ˜… But creating the false and convincing feeling of "easyness" in software products, making them pivotal in our day-to-day needs... Is somewhat worrying. Specially thinking in future generations.

We should all be more aware that this digital world system is COMPLEX AS F**K and much more delicate than it seems. Same as our data, privacy, and all that you're saying.

And printers. Yeah, that too.

Javi Polo

@mdstevens0612 @tomw Consoles, obviously, make casual users to run away in fear. And that includes some good vibes now and then ๐Ÿ˜…

Uraael

@tomw@mastodon.social

Without computers? No.

With fewer computers in the hands of morons? Yes, absolutely.

viq

@catsalad
The only good use for silicon is anti-slip surfaces (says person with two MAC addresses sticking out of their body)
@tomw

viq

@poleguy @catsalad @tomw nope, I'm talking about sand, not rubbery sealant, nor any other form of silly cones.

CatSalad๐Ÿˆ๐Ÿฅ— (D.Burch) :blobcatrainbow:

@viq @poleguy @tomw Speaking of dirt and/or sand... Here's a handy dandy BEAN HOLE diagram.

Gord

@tomw Yeah teaching sand to think was a mistake.

Andreas Hontzia

@tomw There are some individuals, who abuse computers, to abuse people. These have to go...

The Bellman

@tomw love is a strong word. More like โ€œ a complicated and emotionally fraught relationship thatโ€™s hard to explain to your long term spouse or partner โ€œ

Elmo

@tomw how to pin someone else's toot on my own profile

JimmyChezPants

@tomw

Not really.

There are some people who shouldn't have computers. Much as some people can't be trusted with cars, guns, etc.

rewarp

@tomw@mastodon.social All I want is to be rid of them and live out my life with animal friends.

@Tom Walker decades ago, when there were the first discussions about voting computers in germany i had serious discussions about them with self acclaimed conservative folks. they were all in favour of these computers, automatic counting, automatic data transmission. only seconds after the ballots were closed the results would be known. what tremendous progress compared to then when we had to wait 4 hours to get a result. i argued against them: too insecure, too easily manipulated, impossible to control, no recounting possible. this was all dismissed  by my conservative discussion partners: fear mongering, anti-tech-zeal, enemy of progress, green-eco partisan. until the german computer society CCC did manage to hack a voting machine and do all the things mentioned. then many conservatives became mad and quite confused; facts were against them. how could computer enthusiasts like the guys from the CCC could sabotage the ideas of computers? most people in these discussions didn't like my reply back then: because they know how computers work and what can be done with them!

@tomw After 25 years of working IT, I still surprise people when I tell them I hate computers. When it comes to tech, it's been a love-hate relationship between us since day one.

Lee

@tomw Better off without humans, I think!

Zalasur ๐Ÿต

@tomw I'm less "anti-computer" and more "anti-what-computers-have-become-over-the-past-couple-of-decades"

David Megginson

@tomw Very true! ๐Ÿ™‚

Or to paraphrase, the fediverse is the world's biggest community of people who love computers deeply enough to be terrified of the way some people and corporations weaponise them.

Felix Urbasik

@tomw I've been working with digital technology all my life and I'm also planning to only pay using cash and never card from next month onwards.

Octavia con Amore

@tomw @ifixcoinops wait 'till you meet the rest of fedi :cat_giggle:

Richard Bairwell

@tomw you missed the "and people" off the end there..

AskPippa๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ

@tomw I was so excited by computers in the 80s and 90s, but dislike the way they've evolved. Constant updates, too much marketing, the costs, hackers and scammers, viruses, the internet (really, the misinformation and abuse). It makes me long for the days of typewriters, fax machines, snail mail and wired telephones.

unexpectedteapot

@tomw jokes aside, the more one knows and desires to use the capabilities of modern computing, the more they're aware of the drawbacks. You'll find people on here who work on all computer things from infrastructure to minor patches to software application plugins. This, in essence, refers to a deeply distributed network of producers whose desire to use computers doesn't trump their economical and social awareness.

Frances Larina

@tomw

Perhaps 200 years from now people will talk about Mastodinites the way we talk of Luddites.

Bryan Redeagle

@tomw@mastodon.social That's not wrong. I originally wanted computers to be a fun hobby, but now it rules my life as a my only income source.

And as computers get faster, people keep using them for progressively dumber tasks.

tinsmith

@tomw that's the only thing that keeps me from thinking I accidentally joined a cult again.

Ricki Tarr

@tomw This is the most entertaining thing about Mastodon lol. I welcome our computer based overlords, they will probably do better than humans. I know you're listening Alexa and Siri.

K

@tomw My Dad was struggling to understand today, when I said, that if he starts typing an email on his mobile, he can view the 'draft' on his laptop.

When I mentioned, it's because it's saved "in the cloud", he pointed to a cloud in the sky, out the window.

I said, "Yes, that one".

He asked what happened if that cloud developed into a raincloud and disappears by soaking the ground, I said, "Well that's your data going down the drain".

Luckily he knows when I'm joking.

David H. McCoy

@tomw @fuzzface

I think computers are a net positive for humanity.

Aurochs

@tomw Reminds me of this people who think that the world would probably be better off without masturbation.

Leen Kievit

@tomw Not completely gone, but definitely limited. My number one issue being "No voting by computer". To be trusted, the voting process must be transparent and understandable by most people, not just the ones who can check the software.
Inconvenience never outweighs this.

Danny Lucas

@tomw Mastodon: Where tech enthusiasts and luddites coexist, proving irony is alive and well. ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿ’ป

lertsenem

@tomw Most people working in IT today and worth their salt knows deep down in their heart that, all things considered, computers were a mistake.

@lertsenem @tomw There's no polite way to tell you how wrong and insulting this OP is, so please take my word for it.

TheShellyTea

@tomw I think this is the single biggest impact mastodon has had on me and Iโ€™m totally ok with that.

Enalys :enalys:

We just want computer at their right place: playing video-games and make silly projects.

LordPhoenix

@tomw I don't agree, the world would be a much better place if the IT ecosystem wasn't controlled by capitalists, an important nuance...

Martin Christopher

@tomw The world would be better with different computers.

poetaster

@yora maybe one just needs enough different puters? I have a lot small mcus (pi pico, stm, arduinos) so that helps. Lots o small puters.

zannesan

@tomw so true! I found myself in tech only because I didnโ€™t fit into the machine. Now itโ€™s part of the machine, I had to get out. Obviously, I still love parts of tech that are beneficial and giving to my life. Thatโ€™s this community.

Bob K Mertz

@tomw
This hit me yesterday... I think tech peaked in the late 90s and early 00s but the before and after is very different... Technology was growing until then and just getting better but somewhere in the late 00s and especially 10s we saw that technology hijacked and diluted for short term profit. There are so many cool projects people here on Mastodon are working on... Things very worthy of the 90s/00s but a lack of interest from, let's say "management". Things that the world genuinely wants but will never get to see because corporate mentality sees too much investment and too long for returns when they can just slap an AI sticker on whatever they are already doing and market the hell out of the thing that no one really wants.... Or just sneakily collect data and sell it for a huge profit.

That got a little more ranty then I intended ๐Ÿ˜‚

@tomw @dsilverman Ha, been using computers since punched cards on IBM 360 in 1970โ€™s, then TRS-80, Atari 800, Apple II, IBM PCโ€™s. Worked at Bell Labs in 1980โ€™s, loved Unix & now get my Unix โ€œfixโ€ on macOS every day. iPhone indispensable to daily life, on it every day in retirement as I work on converting my 26 years of film photos to digital. Mac hardware great for photo & video work, world would be horrible without computers & photos stored in a shoebox ๐Ÿ™

Tom Walker

@PenguinToot @dsilverman You could store your photos in a photo album, though. A physical one, I mean

Penguin

@tomw @dsilverman Yes, have shelves full of photo albums with prints (scan negatives to digitize them). Requires people to come to our house to see them, then sit in one place & stare at them. Instead send my photos to 10 people at once, literally across the world, to remind us all of days gone by. People can zoom in to see childrenโ€™s faces, everyone comments to everyone else. Thereโ€™s no comparison to a photo album stuck in our house that our children will inherit someday when weโ€™re gone ๐Ÿ™
