@Tom Walker decades ago, when there were the first discussions about voting computers in germany i had serious discussions about them with self acclaimed conservative folks. they were all in favour of these computers, automatic counting, automatic data transmission. only seconds after the ballots were closed the results would be known. what tremendous progress compared to then when we had to wait 4 hours to get a result. i argued against them: too insecure, too easily manipulated, impossible to control, no recounting possible. this was all dismissed by my conservative discussion partners: fear mongering, anti-tech-zeal, enemy of progress, green-eco partisan. until the german computer society CCC did manage to hack a voting machine and do all the things mentioned. then many conservatives became mad and quite confused; facts were against them. how could computer enthusiasts like the guys from the CCC could sabotage the ideas of computers? most people in these discussions didn't like my reply back then: because they know how computers work and what can be done with them!
