It's the time of the year again where many non-profits do their budget planning for the next calendar year.

Just so you know that when you want to donate to your favorite projects, now might be a good time to do so. 😉
It increases the chances that your contribution will bring timely improvement to the tools you love.

Austauschen - geht wieder!

After 5 years, this supercapacitor in a bicycle rear light is defective, which means that you cannot be seen in the dark when stopped (e.g. at traffic lights or crossings). However, this can be replaced.

@DerReparierer
Coole Reparatur,

Leider.

@DerReparierer

Cool.

No risk, no fun.

I've now created the ansible-community organization on @Codeberg to do exactly the same: codeberg.org/ansible-community

I'm not looking to justify my personal motives for this at this time but know that it is not meant to compete with github.com/ansible-community and does not intend to spur a migration from GitHub either.

It is meant to be a neutral, general purpose place to contribute on Ansible projects together outside of GitHub because the Ansible community exists outside of #GitHub.

Any plans to enable some kind of a badge on accounts of supporting members? I think that could work as a kind of advertisement/promotion, to motivate more people to support you (when they see a badge on an account and they discover what it's about).

It seems like our joint stand with @forgejo at #FOSDEM2025 has been accepted, thank you @fosdem!

For those of you that don't know, #FOSDEM is an annual conference for free and open source software taking place in Brussels. We'll be there throughout the event to exchange words and/or stickers with some of you.

See you in February!

We are looking for #hardwareDonations:

If anyone has old servers, drives and equipment and shipping to/in Germany is not a problem, we appreciate your offers.

If you work for a company, we could eventually figure out donation receipts, too.

(Target location is Berlin, pickup in vicinity is not a problem)

Specifically, we could currently make use of SFF-8643 or SFF-8087 cables, if you have some spare 😉

@Codeberg what is your definition of old? Would a Xeon E5-2620 v4 based system with 64 GB RAM be within your definition?

Paul

@Codeberg I can offer two (basically brand new, but tested) WD RED NAS drives with 6TB

Codeberg is going down for maintenance in about 15-30 minutes, hopefully lasting no more than 30 minutee. Please schedule accordingly and take a break :)
Apologies for the inconvenience.

"Nabend" (German good evening) everyone. Some new actor just popped up and is scanning Codeberg for security issues. We are identifying the IP addresses to block and should be back online in a few minutes.

@Codeberg Out of curiosity: what are you guys using to detect threats like this?

The #Forgejo monthly update was published ✨ It is a high level overview of the project activities.

Forgejo is two years old and has been a lively human adventure, a story worth telling. A hackathon organized by Codeberg generated thousands of new translations. Forgejo v9.0.0 was published, as well as a security patch release which was backported to Forgejo v7. A kubernetes cluster was created to replace the current infrastructure, running Forgejo from the Helm Chart.

Dear #GitHub users, if you prefer the orange-themed heatmap for #halloween and would like to see it all year long: feel invited to move to #Forgejo or #Codeberg (and choosing a forgejo theme in the appearance settings). It's the default colour here.

A heatmap: Orange boxes with varying intensity depending on the activity of the day. Legend is months and day of week.

@DerReparierer

Hi! We "upgraded" our primary @matrix chat, (#codeberg.org:matrix.org) to room version 9. Upgrades are a part of the Matrix protocol: They create a new room in the place of the old one, and send invites to everyone in the old room. If you were in the old room, you should have received an invite.

We had 1588 members, but it seems like we only sent ~1180 invites. If you were a member of the chat, please accept the invite! If you haven't received one, please let us know!

If you have any experienced any problems during this room upgrade AND you can not join the room again, send us a direct message with your @matrix ID, we'll invite you.

We did this because the latest "room versions" have introduced some features that are helpful for reducing spam. There is some reason to assume that we experienced something similar to this: grapheneos.social/@GrapheneOS/

@Codeberg @matrix This notice here worked. Just joined the new room thanks 👍🏽

Introducing Sonusmix, an app to easily manage audio routing in Pipewire. It features virtual devices, volume control, routing, application endpoints to manage entire applications at once, persistence, and some tools to work around some of Pipewire's issues. It's available as an AppImage, Flatpak, or Nix package. Feedback is highly appreciated, we have a Matrix channel too! Please let us know if you have any issues!

There seems to be a pretty sizable amount of #Codeberg-using folks in #Aachen, Germany. Would any of you be down for a coffee or something drinkable at a café around here on Saturday or Sunday (as a group / "Stammtisch")? If it goes well, I could do a semi-regular thing out of it.

@n0toose I'd be interested, if it doesn't conflict with my calendar.

#Forgejo was upgraded to version 9 now. The upgrade went smoothly and there are three months of improvements now available to you. 🥳

You can read about the release on the Forgejo blog: forgejo.org/2024-10-release-v9

Thanks to the team for the great work.
As usual: report any bugs you might find to our community issues, or if you are an advanced user, kindly forward the reports directly to codeberg.org/forgejo/forgejo/i

@Codeberg I notice a somewhat longer loading time than usual.
I assume it's a combination of the backend starting to come back online completely and many requests at once?

Codeberg.org

The update itself went smoothly, however, we're really struggling with crawling again.

This time, some actor is hitting the API searching for random keywords. We cannot detect and block the offending IP ranges quickly enough.

Initially, we started hunting for a potential regression in Forgejo that causes the slowness, but then we noticed the new access pattern that seems to be the real cause instead and just coincidences with the update.

Codeberg.org

Hi everyone, during upgrade preparations in the staging environment, we inadvertently killed our production system. It is an issue we encountered in the past and noted down how to work around it, but human error ...

We're restoring service as soon as possible. No data is lost, just a performance issue that needs fixing.

See you soon.
