Today is the last day to apply for the fellowship for maintainers, our new program that will pay #FOSS maintainers for a year to work on the important work of critical software infrastructure.

For the pilot year, we're looking for up to 5 fellows, with freelance contract and employment options. Submit your application by the end of the day: Sunday, 20 Oct 2024!

Boosts appreciated!

Details: sovereigntechfund.de/news/appl #GetFediHired

@sovtechfund If only the maintenance of LibrePlan (libreplan.dev) would be possible I would submit an application in a heartbeat.

Forgejo v9.0, which we'll (hopefully!) start using in a few hours, ships with a new quota feature for public and shared Forgejo instances!

We explained what this change will mean for you, the user (as well as some background information), in a new announcement titled "More power for you - what a storage quota will bring".

blog.codeberg.org/more-power-f

Codeberg.org

TL;DR: We'll eventually starting enforcing a quota to curb abuse (e.g. people creating repositories full of empty commits taking up more than a GB), nothing drastic will happen immediately, and you will be able to request more space if you do need it.

Don't panic, everything will be fine!

(Feel free to ask us questions if you have any.)

@Codeberg Is there somewhere you can look up how much storage you are currently using ?

(I have a few docker images in the packages storage used in CI jobs, that get updated a lot on dependency updates. I think I configured the auto-deletion of old versions correctly, but with those muti-arch images it's hard to know if it's working 100% correctly)

Codeberg has two downtimes scheduled in the next two days, upgrading #Forgejo to the latest version as well as operation on our owned hardware.

See the notification at status.codeberg.eu/status/code for more and up-to-date information.

Thank you for your understanding. We'll try to minimize service disruption.

Sun 2024-10-20, starting around 16.00 UTC / 18.00 CEST: We're preparing for and updating Forgejo to version 9 which will probably involve a brief period of downtime in best case.

@Codeberg Ive found it challenging to migrate pages over. I guess that must be the migration.

I have used a 2D library called gg to make the clock render more quickly and with less CPU load. It is still far from perfect and has the wrong DPI on a mac. But I put it on #Codeberg none the less. So anyone, who is interested, may have a look.

In other news, I'll share something that you may have missed: @forgejo ships with a couple of theme variants for the colorblind: codeberg.org/forgejo/forgejo/p

These are also available on Codeberg: codeberg.org/user/settings/app

Screenshot of the "Default theme" setting in Codeberg's/Forgejo's Appearance settings. The description reads: "This will be your default theme across the site".

There is a dropdown menu. The selected theme is codeberg-auto. Some other options are visible: forgejo-auto-deuteranopia-protanopia, forgejo-light-deuteranopia-protanopia, forgejo-dark-deuteranopia-protanopia, forgejo-auto-tritanopia, forgejo-light-tritanopia and forgejo-dark-tritanopia.

Is it possible to set own colors for programing language syntax?

Oliver Pfleiderer

@Codeberg I guess it just broke because your imprint is still on the "old" TMG instead of the brandnew "DMG" as are 90% of all the other sites in the country.

Hi. Yes, we have a full outage right now (status.codeberg.eu).

This acknowledgment comes from the social media manager that _isn't_ a system administrator. I can't share more details right now, so all I have to say is the following for now: It has been a weird and challenging week, sorry for the inconvenience. ~n

EDIT: We're back for now. :)

@Codeberg hello social media manager that isn’t a sysadmin. Another social media manager that isn’t an admin here πŸ‘‹. Sorry to hear you are going through this. Let us know if our team can help in any way with the situation.

Alex Hoyau

@Codeberg you are the best, you will overcome this challenging situation πŸ™ŒπŸ’ͺ

Comrades, the #Guix Science channels have moved from GitHub to Codeberg πŸ‘‡

Migration was very easy and complete, with pull requests migrated without loss. We have yet to see how contributors can resume work on PRs opened pre-migration, but it looks great so far!

#Forgejo v9.0 was just released! Get it at forgejo.org/download/. πŸš€

It is the first version to be released under a copyleft license. Forgejo has early support for a soft-quota that can protect your server from high disk usage due to abuse. It also removes support for go-git, considered too hazardous for daily usage compared to Git. The translations saw an unprecedented number of improvements thanks to the hackathon organized by Codeberg.

For those wondering why Codeberg is slow right now:

β€žGitHub took down the XX repository due to "Excessive Bandwidth Usageβ€œ.

Welcome to Codeberg. Feel free to move on.

But thank you for the stresstest.

Just to clarify our stance: We're happy to accept large free/libre software projects migrating to Codeberg. This can even happen in a hurry. And we're ready to help with the migration as good as possible.

But to reiterate: Hosting proprietary content on Codeberg is not allowed.
And: Causing excessive traffic to mostly proprietary content is even less allowed.

Thanks.

@Codeberg You folks really post the most confusing updates πŸ˜‚ Between this and the naming thing I just have no idea what is being said

> For those wondering why Codeberg is slow right now

Is this why CodeBerg is completely offline right now? Or is that to do with the outcome of your train trip ...

Codeberg.org

What are we up to for today? What makes nerds get up early? Some journey ahead ...

Two laptops in a train, the first one shows a Ceph (distributed storage cluster) web GUI. The view outside the window is blurred due to speed.

@Codeberg is that Budgie Desktop on the right? πŸ€”

@Codeberg thanks for the trip, interesting to follow this story unfold today.

@Codeberg Show-off, with that bright green HEALTH_OK from the Ceph cluster. 😁

You might have guessed it already: We are struggling with excessive crawling today. We have - again - blocked several large IP ranges, but were not yet able to identify the new actor.

We are working on restoring service availability and fine-tuning our rate-limiting.

If someone is interested in implementing an improved native rate-limiting in #Forgejo that also protects other instances from abusive crawlers, please reach out πŸ˜‰

@Codeberg I know what you feel... Same on gitnet.fr.

@Codeberg Any chance you put some honeypot paths in robots.txt that trigger fail2ban against any requestors?

Torsten Grote

@Codeberg
Note that @fdroidorg can't build apps hosted on codeberg anymore due to this. Its buildserver clones the repo for each app and soon gets 429.

Today is the 2nd and last day of the #Codeberg #translathon. A hackathon, but for translations.

I have submitted my 3 game projects #Repixture, #Lazarr! and #Glitch. To my surprise, Spanish got translated very fast for Lazarr! πŸ™‚

And I also contributed a bit to other games like #HurryCurry or #Librerama.

If you want to help with translating my own game projects, I hang out in this Matrix room tonight to answer questions:

Oops, sorry for the confusion! We were actually talking about Luanti (formerly known as Minetest)!

We wish the @Minetest team all the best with its rebranding effort: blog.minetest.net/2024/10/13/I

For better or worse, we will stick to our established names for Codeberg and Forgejo.

Thanks to all the contributions for our #Translathon so far. You can help with software #localization into your language, making it accessible to a wider range of users.

Check out codeberg.org/Codeberg/translat for more details on how to participate, or join the first scheduled meetups later today, starting at 14.00 UTC.

Codeberg.org

If you can, consider spreading the word and advocating for software translation outside of the free/libre tech bubble.

Getting started with software localization can be easy, get started here: codeberg.org/Codeberg/translat

I might be interested, but translate.codeberg.org is literally unreadable due to low color contrast. 🀦

I'm not changing my browser or theme because the site has terrible dark/light mode coding.

I wish all participants the best of luck in the translathon.
I cannot join this time, but the announcement made me consider translating my app sooner than later. Thanks for all the effort!
