This should be Mastodon's next catchphrase: "Not a Trump-inspired billboard".

Richard MacManus

Bloggers / newsletter writers take note: in the new Mastodon 4.3 release, if you go to settings > verification, you can now turn on "Author attribution". So when someone posts a link to Cybercultural, I think they now see my Mastodon profile alongside the link. Very cool. blog.joinmastodon.org/2024/10/

Mark Zuckerberg basically just confirmed that your feeds will soon be full of AI-generated content. Another reason the fediverse needs to exist: so that you can follow humans. theverge.com/24253481/meta-ceo

@ricmac I mean, it's already there. I have a Facebook to talk to a handful of people, and the feed is full of AI slop, no matter how many times I tell Facebook I don't want it.

Post from @rabble on why he's chosen to use #Nostr and not #ActivityPub and the #Fediverse. He makes some compelling points. Personally I am not too worried about the server admin parts of his argument (I have enough control, even if I don't control the server), but I agree that this isn't ideal:

"You can’t use a single fediverse identity with your profile and followers in Peertube, Mobilizon, WriteFreely, and Pixelfed. You need a totally separate account in each one."

Some fediverse software already has tools to link and aggregate your different fediverse identities together -- as well as provide nomadic identity and single sign-on between compatible instances, but that isn't the software you've chosen to use.

There's a specification/proposal called FEP-ef61 which brings some of these abilities to the wider fediverse over ActivityPub (we're currently using a couple of other open protocols to make these features available in the fediverse right now for those who simply can't live without it).

Anyway, a number of folks are working on this today. Across a number of different software platforms.

@ricmac @rabble Pixelfed and Mastodon are not isolated from each other. I have Pixelfed users in my home feed on Mastodon. That's a very weird definition of isolated. Mastodon has search too. Phanpy has a catch-up algorithm. I don't find the arguments in the post compelling.

At #FediForum this week, we saw that the #fediverse encompasses many more applications than just Mastodon (and soon, Threads). In this article for @TheNewStack, I review the event and discuss a few of the more promising apps/services that were demo'ed. I also look at @fedidevs, a new network of enthusiastic fediverse #developers. thenewstack.io/fediforum-showc

@ricmac I noticed the Newsmast aggregators already, they shared some of my toots. I didn't pay much attention, as I thought they were “just bots”. Thanks for the clarification. Patchwork sounds interesting, too.

@ricmac

Hey Richard, thanks for checking out Newsmast! 🧡

We'd be happy to talk more about what we're doing if you're interested.

Thanks @ricmac for coming to #FediForum and the very nice piece!

Will add a link to it from our website shortly.

Here's a blog post explaining more about my move from Substack to an Eleventy/Buttondown combo for my newsletter Cybercultural.com. With special thanks to @lene and @jay, whose prior work helped me create this post-Substack solution. ricmac.org/2024/01/26/why-i-mi

Hoppmester Fønvind Snublebluss

@ricmac @lene @jay Well done on the #eleventy, but did you have to trigger my "I was so drunk I shagged someone whose name I didn't remember, so I had to take her to Starbucks where she had to tell the Barista her name" PTSD from that event?

You can see the hangover in Messina and Beale. Five hundred bucks for that "unconference" was pretty fucked up, though, so I drank to forget.

It lasted longer than Burbn… (obscure Web 2.0 joke). But seriously, I did try Artifact but didn’t find it compelling. The founders got the timing just right with Instagram — right at the start of the smartphone app revolution. But I feel like their luck and timing was out this time…it’s now the start of the fediverse revolution, which will bring blogs and decentralized social media to the fore, not centralized apps like Artifact. medium.com/artifact-news/shutt

Peter Forbes

@ricmac I was fond of it at first but found quality of recommendations diminished and new features (sharing links, comments on articles) were not valuable to me. Plus the in-app browser experience without ad blocker was dismal.

Olivier Simard-Casanova 🦋

@ricmac @tchambers I had a very similar thought when I learned the news: would have #Artifact survived if they built it on the open social web from day 1?

We'll never know, but I think it’s an interesting question.

Bernie the Wordsmith

@ricmac I didn't ended up using artifact a lot. That said. I bless the rains on the person of Artifact that created the "report click bait" button. May he live long and healthy years and find nothing but joy along the way.

Here's my wrapup of #webdev for 2023 -> JavaScript continued to dominate web development this year — even in WebAssembly. But also: generative AI was integrated into web frameworks, CDEs arrived, and Jamstack got a makeover. thenewstack.io/web-development

It’s ok to hold two opposing opinions in your mind at the same time, if the larger truth is more important. I don’t trust Zuck / Meta, but I also want them to federate with Mastodon. Even if they play power games later on, you can always jump to an instance that blocks them. The power is with you, the “user”, and that is what the web started out as and always should be. Besides, if it all turns to custard just start an indie blog and/or sail the world like the Scuttlebutt guy from NZ.

Johannes Ernst

@ricmac And I would add: Meta/Threads adds momentum to the Fediverse, and that is good. Even if they turn evil with Threads, and everybody blocks them again a year or two in the future, some of the momentum will remain and that helps the rest of the fediverse.

Richard MacManus

This sounds pretty awesome, especially compared to the X drought and Threads reticence to support publishers -> “Mozilla aims to convince publishers that Mastodon isn’t just another place they have to support, but one that could deliver on their objectives. As it learns from the publishers and other content creators what they want and need, it then intends to use that understanding to build features and drive efforts that can help them reach their audiences.” techcrunch.com/2023/11/03/why-

Also liked this bit: “the company is using a forked version of Elk as its alternative web client for its Mastodon server, which is what gives it its slick look and feel”

Bill Seitz

@ricmac the problem with "supporting publishers" is when it turns into "support engagement growth to support the advertising model"

Jon Mitchell

@ricmac Thank God a somewhat moneyed organization with a communications department has decided to do the legwork on this

@ricmac it depends. Will they be able, though interactions with threads accounts, to get personal datas from regular mastodon users?

Scorpil 🇺🇦🇪🇺

@ricmac i don’t like Meta and I’m not gonna use #threads app myself. Yet I don’t see why not follow people from there. So yes if I like the content I definitely would.

David Hopeward

@ricmac Not likely, but it’s not absolutely impossible.

Richard MacManus

I interviewed @evan about creating #ActivityPub, his complicated feelings about Mastodon, and opportunities for #developers in the #fediverse. Needless to say, he has some excellent ideas for the fedi-future, so I do hope you read it. thenewstack.io/the-creator-of-

Bob Wyman

@ricmac @evan
I think the most important part of this interview is Evan's concern that the Mastodon-specific protocol "limits the creativity for developers wanting to build in the fediverse."

We would be better served by a generic ActivityStreams protocol that could be used independently of specific server or client implementations.

"Do it like Mastodon does" is not a good definition for an open protocol.

Evan Prodromou

@ricmac thanks so much! This is a really strong article and pretty accurately reflects my thoughts and experience.

One quibble: I'm not sure I'd claim the title of "*The* creator of ActivityPub". @erincandescent @tsyesika @cwebber were all co-authors, and did way more of the hard work of standardisation.

Richard MacManus

Why should #developers be interested in the #Fediverse? I spoke to @darius, who (y'all probably know!) runs a Mastodon instance called Friend Camp, about why developers should experiment with open protocols like ActivityPub & how becoming a hosting provider is a way in. thenewstack.io/why-developers-
