I interviewed @evan about creating #ActivityPub, his complicated feelings about Mastodon, and opportunities for #developers in the #fediverse. Needless to say, he has some excellent ideas for the fedi-future, so I do hope you read it. thenewstack.io/the-creator-of-

@ricmac @evan
I think the most important part of this interview is Evan's concern that the Mastodon-specific protocol "limits the creativity for developers wanting to build in the fediverse."

We would be better served by a generic ActivityStreams protocol that could be used independently of specific server or client implementations.

"Do it like Mastodon does" is not a good definition for an open protocol.

@bobwyman @evan great point, although just to note the words you quoted were mine. I don't want to put words in Evan's mouth; that was just my interpretation of what he said.

@bobwyman @ricmac @evan Oh, like how the web's increasingly defined by Google Chrome's behaviour?

@ricmac thanks so much! This is a really strong article and pretty accurately reflects my thoughts and experience.

One quibble: I'm not sure I'd claim the title of "*The* creator of ActivityPub". @erincandescent @tsyesika @cwebber were all co-authors, and did way more of the hard work of standardisation.
