I got a bit sidetracked tonight, it was brought to my attention that Pixelfed embeds were loading several MB of css/js assets. Just finished refactoring embeds with inline css and js, and way more efficient backend logic! Before vs After The Pixelfed mobile app hashtag feed is awesome, not only can you browse quickly with the 3 column grid but you can also follow tags and discover related hashtags. I have a few ideas on how we can generate related hashtags so admins donโt have to manually associate them, love challenges like these ๐ @dansup Can't wait for groups! It seems great alternative for discord server! @pixelfed Probably not the right place to ask about this, but is Pixelfed federation whitelisted? I've had some Pixelfed users say that they're not able to search for or follow me (at this account) from their Pixelfed account. ๐ ๐ Wow, Taylor Swift joined Threads and has 9M+ followers already! Her account has not enabled fediverse sharing yet, but if/when they do, I'm eager to see how the fediverse handles it.

@dansup I had an interesting idea for PubKit, I do want to open source the code but I'd also like to get some funding/donations while keeping the service free. The idea is to set a goal, say $15,000 of donations to reach before the source code is published, basically incentivizing the release by a set monetary goal. Wdyt?

@dansup to play a bit of devil's advocate, that's a bit of a money extortion scheme. I'd say either open up or don't. Doesn't it qualify for nlnet grants? I've sponsored projects in the past but money is tight enough currently. But I am a firm believer in paying for open source work. @dansup $15,000 might be tough to reach, maybe split it up by the individual services? Like, - $2000 to open source the library Or something like that? I imagine these components are all fairly independent? @dansup Have a look at the #sponsorware model of MkDocs and mkdocstrings Also the #DelayedOpenSource of Sentry, with maybe a payment option for immediate open source access There are many schemes. What will surely burn you out is expecting people (let alone corporations) to "do the right thing" and then realizing they won't (in big enough numbers) Looking forward to onboarding more https://pubkit.net developers this weekend! Got a lot of positive feedback so far, and am looking forward to getting more so I can improve our products even more. Remember, PubKit will be opt-in so you need to verify ownership of your server/domain before you can send/receive activities to that domain, this will prevent abuse and ensure usage respects fediverse norms! When you live rent free in their head, you know you doing something right ๐ Some people block and spread hate, others build and create. While they cast shadows we shine bright โจ Who is crazy enough to think they can challenge Instagram? Me. Us. Together we can ๐ Happy 6th Birthday @pixelfed, let's make this summer one the fediverse will remember

@dansup@mastodon.social @pixelfed@mastodon.social any plans to publish the app on fdroid, or at least automate github releases? Seeing some pretty interesting projects apply to https://pubkit.net! More #PubKit updates after I'm done work! ๐ Now the @pixelfed app is open sourcies, you can run npm i and build the app on your own device ๐ค https://github.com/pixelfed/pixelfed-rn/blob/main/src/app/(auth)/(tabs)/index.tsx This is the simplest the feed code will ever be, it's only gunna get uglier and more complex ๐ Fedi devs are either super smart and boring, or crazy and memorable it's not a competition, but girl ๐ Who is crazy enough to think they can challenge Instagram? @dansup@mastodon.social @pixelfed@mastodon.social any plans to publish the app on fdroid, or at least automate github releases? Some Pixelfed history that you may not know: I registered pixelfed.org on Apr 15 2018, 2 days before I announced it I knew I wanted to build a federated IG, but I spent hours picking a name and making sure the .com was available. I registered the domains/github org before I wrote a single line of code, this was a side project habit of mine at the time What I never expected was for Pixelfed to be more than a throwaway weekend project If it wasn't for the huge response from the fedi... If it wasn't for the huge response from the fediverse, I would have given up (like many similar projects did at the time) Y'all really inspired me to continue and evolve, most fediverse users don't realize the impact they have on projects and developers, especially smaller ones This is why I'm so open to feedback and love giving credit to the "smallest" ideas! This really is magic โจ I wouldn't be the developer I am today without the fediverse Y'all have supported me so much You pushed me to grow beyond my comfort zone to learn and build things like https://loops.video, https://pubkit.net, and even hecking mobile apps!!! I'm forever grateful, and remain committed to pushing the fediverse forward at all costs We're just getting started I hope you remember to keep me humble, let's praise positive actions and growth, not developers like me This belongs to you โค๏ธ |

@dansup Great work, always appreciated
