@dansup I haven't seen stories from other people yet, only my own (test-)story. It is indicated by the ring around my profile picture on my profile page.

But where will I see indicators for stories of other people? A ring around the profile pic in the timeline would be pretty small and barely noticeable on a cell phone. Or will there be a stories header in the timeline or something?

oh how i wish i had a time machine to tell you that you'll have to rewrite the 90~ vue components to react native (for the mobile app) before it ever sees the light of day 😅

But unlike on Instagram, it's obviously possible to view stories without showing up in that list. The fact that Instagram does it in a compulsory manner has already gotten me into quite some trouble.

@dansup stories always seemed like a weird bolt-on feature on Instagram just to keep up with other social networks.

We don't have to implement every feature to be "good" or a competitive or whatever. We xna do things that make sense to the platform.

Story reaction/replies are treated as a DM, and notifications are generated!

@dansup I'm not a Snapchat user, so maybe someone else can make the comparison: What's missing from #Element (a #Matrix client) to make it comparable to Snapchat?
Matrix protocol is federated, self hosted, E2EE. Is to instant messaging what ActivityPub is to social media.
I realize it may be a tough comparison, the line between messenger and social media is pretty fluid.

Instagram needs this thing because of the confusing algorithmic feed. From my own experience, with a chronological feed, you don't need this — you remember what you've already seen and just stop scrolling on your own when it appears.

@dansup @activitypub you can use Duration for passing around the amount of time that the AP object will be around. After that propagate a Delete for it maybe(?).

However you have to rely on services/apps honoring them, which might not be what users expect.

@dansup @grishka @activitypub strong suggestion: avoid the giant trash fire of disinfo and hate groups that Facebook enabled with private groups. Instead, make all groups either fully Public, or “semi-public” where posts in groups don’t appear on my main feed, but still can be as searchable as any Mastodon toots.
