I feel like the distinction between ephemeral stories and posts is not as clear as I assumed.

Ephemeral posts are exactly the same as regular posts, but they get deleted after a set time.

Ephemeral stories are not like regular posts, they do not appear in timelines and have their own slideshow-esque user interface that shows unseen stories first and can have different durations, swipe up links, stickers, and more. #pixeldev #activitypub #stories

@dansup I think #stories are the commercial network's way of encouraging people to visit the site frequently and making #FOMA worse.

I don't think #activitypub applications should support stories.

@ls I disagree, the reason they are so popular is because of the nature of the ephemeral medium.

You are more likely to share something "low quality" or more often compared to regular posts.

@dansup What ephemeral medium? The internet is not an ephemeral medium... you can't delete on the internet, especially on a federated network.

Stories may give the illusion that posts may vanish magically and nobody will see "low quality" content later, but that can be dangerous.

Personally, I don't like the viewer-side's user experience of stories either.

@dansup but those swipe up links and other fancy stuff is locked until you have a metric ton of followers and advertisement deals, right? Right? 😄

dansup

@technicallypossible Yeah, on IG anyways. They won't be locked on :pixelfed: unless an instance admin disables them entirely.
