I was wrong, and I appreciate all the feedback regarding @pixelfed app onboarding

- Removed the pf.s default label
- Added "Other" option

I don't mind admitting I'm wrong, but more importantly, I realize how crucial your feedback is in developing this platform and that's what makes it so special

I listen, I'm not always right, and I appreciate constructive criticism.

Y'all shouldn't hesitate to call me out btw, we strive for community consensus ❤️

@dansup
I appreciate your willingness to take community feedback on board. This iteration of the onboarding screen is definitely a step in the right direction. That said, the problems before were that the previous design encouraged centralization. This design still does so by making the largest instance literally the first choice.

Take a page from invidio.us .Set a basic, objective standard to meet and offer a selection of any instances that do as first choice.

Adding in-app registrations to the @pixelfed app is challenging, and not for technical reasons

The decentralized nature means anyone can start an instance, but what happens when the admin decides they want to shut it down, or shut it down without notice?

I think the app should limit in-app sign-ups to trusted instances that won't disappear overnight

A potential compromise could be invite QR codes, or app links

Thoughts?

@dansup @pixelfed Personally I would keep the list of trusted instances, but still add the ability to enter a custom URL, bit make it clear that Pixelfed can't take responsibility of what happens on custom instances :blobfox:

@dansup @pixelfed warn the users. Other stuff is not your problem anymore 🙃

Max Lee :pizzablobcat:

@dansup just let people have an option to specify the domain manually. If they already know that from somewhere then they most likely have a reason to use that specific instance.

It of course doesn't need to be shoved in your face and I personally would not include a full list of all known instances in the app directly but not offering signups on arbitrary instances as a feature to advanced/knowledgable users massively gimps the app and goes against the federated idea of the whole thing imo.

dansup

I listen, and made a few changes to the new @pixelfed app onboarding process based on your feedback!

It will be rolling out next week

Max Lee :pizzablobcat:

@dansup Is there a way to specify an arbitrary instance for the usecase where someone already knows where they want to sign up?

@dansup @pixelfed I feel old spinning that birth date selector like it's the Price is Right... :oof:

@dansup I wish there was a way in the server select dialog to search for other servers. This is reminding me of the mastodon dialog where .social seems like the default. That said, I know you’re working hard to improve the experience, and I appreciate it.

HOLY SMOKES!

New Drake album just dropped, shoutout to the mandem who stayed up to hear it first 🔥

@dansup This and the new Earl Sweatshirt/Alchemist album, we eating tonight

locness3

@dansup nice but, please do not promote a "default" server

DELETED

@dansup
Didn't like the "default" server, but I love the design.

✨ Refined Registrations

I put a fresh coat of paint on the registration/onboarding process in the @pixelfed app

From 13 screens to 3, the new sign-up experience is much simpler! Can't wait to roll this out

@dansup @pixelfed why does it ask for birthday? that shouldn't be required...

@dansup @pixelfed it's very sleek and pretty -- two thumbs up

Started watching #shameless a few days ago, now on season 2

I'm hooked, what an iconic show

Edit: It's the US version

Moritz

@dansup Which one? There's two versions of the show (UK and US – a little bit like The Office)

Jørgen fra Europa

@dansup British or American version? I've only watched the US version and thought it was entertaining, but English humour is usually more up my alley

Myphatself

@dansup so many good scenes. Love to hate Frank.

The most challenging aspect of developing the @pixelfed app is the landing/onboarding screen

The first impression and onboarding flow can make or break it

I've studied a few prominent apps, implemented a few improvements, and look forward to shipping our new onboarding experience!

Jocelynephiliac :reclaimer:

@dansup a while back I did a case study on dating app UX, where I tried out nearly every popular app on the app store.

Not a single one was without sin in the onboarding. The most common flaw was using the wrong input type for a lot of data (eg, dropdowns for date fields, text fields for numbers, generic input for email, etc)

Theres a balance between taking too much information and too little, and very few walked the line.

Melroy van den Berg

@dansup @pixelfed just implement face recognition and a lookup in the government database and the user is automatically identified haha 🙏🤣🎂

Ello

@dansup @pixelfed this is fine if you only want users who already use Pixelfed.

If I download an unfamiliar app, I want to explore a bit before I sign up.

If it insists that I sign up before I can do anything at all, then I’m deleting it and never thinking about it again

dansup

I should probably put out a call for react native developers who want to help with #Sup

If you’re interested, join our discord (link in @pixelfed bio)

I’ll need a few trusted contributors to help maintain the project while I focus on other things, I will establish a solid foundation first of course 😎

@dansup @pixelfed you already have a matrix room why promote the discord one? I want to lurk in.

@dansup @pixelfed Hi. If I want ot donate to the development of Sup, should I donate to you directly?

"what does pixelfed do that Mastodon doesn't already?"

I might be biased, but I think this is an interesting question

Mastodon does provide many photo sharing features, and so does Pixelfed

The real difference is in how Pixelfed limits feeds to photo/videos compared to Mastodon's microblogging

It's a different experience, but that doesn't mean you have to limit yourself to one or the other!

@dansup

The user-experience is different.

A lot different.

And that isn't a minor thing.

From the user's point-of-view, that is all they know of an application. (Things like the back-end are almost completely invisible to them.)

Oblomov

@dansup BTW I was wondering: how does Pixelfed handle image uploads? I assume it doesn't butcher them the way Mastodon does, but does it let them through unaltered or does it do some cleaning up or whatever?

dansup

I'm doing some pretty significant refactoring to the @pixelfed app

- Replacing AsyncStorage with MMKV

- Re-wrote the navigation stack

- Refactoring components to use native RN as the UI library we're using is being deprecated

These aren't as pretty or exciting as most updates are, but these foundational updates are necessary for the public release 😅

bilbo_le_hobbit :bzh:

@dansup @pixelfed Hi, I noticed that it wasn't possible to display collections from the Pixelfed app. Is this planned in the near future?

Moto :rainbowinfinity:

@dansup @pixelfed The rate at which you keep pushing out features, you’ve more than earned yourself a “pay down tech debt” release.

Enjoy your less-smelly codebase!

dansup

✨ Simpler & Speedier

I'm refactoring the @pixelfed mobile app to improve onboarding and loading time in anticipation for the public release!

Some highlights:
- App opens much faster
- Easier sign-ups
- Deep linking
- Share target support
- Push Notifications

Shipping soon! 🚀
