”But Mastodon also has [...] a lot on its plate including integration with Threadsβ€œ

It's lines like this that makes me completely unable to take those calling for a hard fork of Mastodon seriously.

All Mastodon do for Threads is the same they for any fediverse developer having issues federating with them. (And there's certainly limits to that)

Along with perhaps writing more FEPs to standardize behaviour, which benefits *everyone*

@thisismissem mmm, I think they’re talking about the inevitable scaling needs that come with handling all that federation traffic

Shoq

@thisismissem You often make perfect sense, and I often feel a bit guilty going on about quoted posts. But only because I saw us in a race to capture journalists. That ship has sailed. But we can now pivot and let Threads lure them in, then contribute new tools to support them and everyone else.

⚑️ Pixelfed Admins

You may notice this red banner on your feeds when you are running an outdated version, reminding you to update ASAP.

@pixelfed I have not noticed that yet, & I am on 0.11.9 (for now).

Shadow, First of His Name

@pixelfed 88 more updates to go before version 1.0.0 πŸ€ͺ

Thank you for your work and anyone who contributes, will upgrade today.

@pixelfed You might want to consider using Webtorrent or IPFS as your CDN since if something goes viral it won't result in overloading the server.

Loops will launch with a chronological only feed, then a Followers feed and finally the For You feed.

Before we can serve personalized feeds, we need to build and label the video and topic graphs. We will be A/B testing the For You page during the next few weeks. You will be able to tell because there will a new For You header menu!

Frederico Machuca

@dansup are we going to be able to completely opt out of the For You feed? meaning, we don’t even see a For You feed and all tracking, learning, etc is disabled for our account?

✨Hello Notification Feed!
We just finished adding the notification feature to Loops, along with Push Notification and filtering.

We hope you're ready πŸš€

✨ Improved Loops Share menu

Now with a new "Not Interested" button to help train the For You feed along with Bookmark and Report features!

@dansup I'm assuming it's using a pretty standard recommendation mechanism, is it?

wakest ⁂

@dansup you might need to add a warning about the fact that you are using the Bookmark feature as a signal for training anything. There have been lots of articles mentioning how the bookmark and like features "on the fediverse" are private and dont do any training of algorithms. Regardless if thats true it is expected by many

nicolas ⁂

@dansup Good features, though maybe β€œShare” isn’t the right name for that drawer since only one action in it does that. Maybe β€œActions”, or no name at all. What icon opens it?

✨ Iconic Onboarding

With Loops, you will be able to take advantage of your Mastodon (or Pixelfed) account to find friends based on accounts you're already following!

Discovery is crucial, and we're making it even easier ⚑️

@dansup As this made the on boarding of Threads made so good, don't forget the "Follow if they join" button there.

If I sign up as the first person and see 200 Mastodon "friends" that aren't there yet, I want to "follow" them. I don't want 200 notifications with Β»Person joined, follow?Β«. They should be followed by joining already, if I chose so.

So please "copy the homework" completely or even improve it a bit.

Nitrovenom

@dansup whatever you guys do, make it convenient and appealing to a broad audience but don't make it addictive.

An important thing to clarify on the newly formed Mastodon 501(c)(3) entity: it's not here to make or influence product decisions. It has no legal ability to enforce any such changes. Primary operations will remain led by the Germany-based Mastodon gGmbH, and this won’t change.

The focus of the U.S entity is to provide another vehicle for donations and other forms of support. The Board has no legal "control" beyond this.

I've seen people mention that the Loops push notifications are dark patterns, and that is not my intention at all

I'm not encrypting the notifications and they can be collected by various parties (NSA, Apple, Google) so I didn't want to include any more metadata than I needed to

Hope you understand!

@dansup Awesome! i imagine the tiktok ban in the US will give this project the popularity it deserves.

@dansup why is the highlighted tab smaller than the non-highlighted ones? In most UIs I've seen, it's the other way around.

dansup

Loop video urls will be super short!

ex: loops.video/v/5jM_jMRGuYbLc

Notice no username? That's because we plan to support username changes ✨

Loops is open source, and as such, I think it's a bit naive to spread rumors about data privacy when I haven't even pushed all the code yet.

I'm not some start up, I don't give a heck about your data, I just like building cool things for cool people

That being said, I know I don't always make the right decisions, and look forward to community feedback so we can find the right solutions, together!

I'm not a regular mom, I'm a cool mom 😎

@dansup you mentioned earlier it has an algorithm, would it make it addictive? I’m a little bit worried about that as I’m running away of that type of apps

Danie van der Merwe

@dansup data and code are two very different things. I don't think any open source project posts their user data with their source code. Data is normally stored on a server or end user device, and the source code merely powers the interface.

dansup

"Someone you know (@pixelfed) joined Loops!"

Just imagine how easy it will be to grow your Loops network graph with innovative features like these!

We're just getting started 😎

@dansup @pixelfed Instagram does something similar with Threads and it can be annoying. But as long as it can be turned off it's fine by me. I would much rather join Loops than Threads anyway.

dansup

Loops is a new platform for sharing short videos, and it's open source + federated using #ActivityPub

We're really excited to share this sneak peek that showcases the new onboarding flow and discovery features (Connect Mastodon) and look forward to the upcoming beta release!

Are you ready for #Loops ?

Loops has a simple For You algorithm to show relevant interests and topics, it will get better over time like my Autospam algorithm!

The way it works is pretty clever, using a combination of on-device machine learning and nlp we use plenty of β€œsignals” to classify content and associate it accordingly.

This is more than just short videos, helping people discover relevant content is crucial to our mission and I look forward to building the best fediverse For You feed 😎
