The new @pixelfed app is so much faster, just see for yourself

We're re-writing our app from scratch using the latest tools and best practices to provide the best photo and video sharing experience in the fediverse 🚀

The new app will be rolling out to Android users soon ✨

Working on the @pixelfed app refactor and omg it’s so much faster and responsive on both Android and iOS

It even supports offline mode, and many more optimizations!

I can’t wait to ship this, it hurts to see such negative feedback wrt the current app (though I agree it sucks on Android) and I can’t wait to blow your minds with this new version 😎

PS: the new app is open source, follow along at github.com/pixelfed/pixelfed-r

Ruh roh, the hashtag police are out, hide yo hashtags!!

While Pixelfed has a max hashtag limit of 60 per post, a majority of posts contain less than half that

I checked the reported account and the hashtags they use are related, and the account has thousands of (legit) followers so who am I to play hashtag god??

If you get offended by the # or context of hashtags, maybe they aren't the problem 😬

@dansup hey man, sorry to tag you here, but I'd like to ask you to check out a message to hello@pixelfed.org email with the subject line “failed registration”, thanks!

Omg, I fucking love Digital Ocean ❤️

Hands down the best hosting provider for devs and fedi admins

@dansup Yeah! Using a droplet as a reverse proxy to send this post! They have never given me any problems

@dansup I'll second this.

I've been running multiple separate servers on DO for years and never had an issue (Mastodon (2 servers), Peertube, WordPress, WireGuard VPN, mail server, Phanpy, Bluesky PDS, and a general web server) with never a problem. I also use 2 DO Managed Postgres DBs and a DO Managed MySQL DB. Everything runs fast. Their support is excellent. They have many excellent tutorials.

Once they contacted me because I forgot to close a port in the firewall a few hours after I forgot to close it, so they do security scanning as well.

Scaling to a larger server, to get more disk space, or a larger DB is just a click.

Automated backups.

I think they are worth the small extra cost.

I'm a bit frustrated with Android at the moment, I've spent hours tonight trying to upgrade the Pixelfed app to the latest RN version (and the tons of deps we use)

I'm nearly there, I can feel it... 😅

@dansup this exact experience is why I haven’t returned to react native. I largely enjoyed the development experience, but dependency updates broke the app every damn time.

@pixelfed maybe pixelfed hackathons? to solve issues?

-_- but I am not an Android programmer, 'm writing just from the bench

Chris Wood

@pixelfed increased my donation! I hope you’re doing well, thank you for all your work. You bring lots of excitement to this corner of the internet and I’m very grateful to have an alternative to Instagram.

Stop platform hate, create or collaborate

The #fediverse isn't perfect, it's the best solution we have

You can make a difference, simply by participating in a project/platform and suggesting ideas or reporting bugs

You don't need to know how to code to make this place better, but if you want to make a bigger impact, it does help

We need to stop shitting on fedi platforms like Mastodon and see the fediverse as the competitor to centralized social platforms

@dansup
I have not seen any of that going on. I agree with what you say - 100%. The Fediverse is awesome.

Between Pixelfed, Groups, Loops, PubKit and Sup, I'm struggling to meet my self-imposed deadlines to a degree that I'm delaying several journalist interviews

I was planning on working on Loops tonight, however I noticed our Pixelfed TestFlight build expires in 13 days so I had to jump back to the Pixelfed app, and now I'm working on Push Notification support

It's not a big deal really tho, I work better under pressure and love these challenges

Press: Pls wait a min, til we're ready to shine ✨

@dansup 🥺 Please, slow down and take care of yourself, Dansup.

Blort™ 🐀Ⓥ🥋☣️

I work at my best under pressure at the last minute, too. That said, while it was productive, I also learned that doing it that way consistently just burned me out. It works well for a while, but after a while it can be stressful and counterproductive.

Take care of yourself, @dansup.

Is it possible to delegate some of these tasks?

Working on @pixelfed app push notifications!

Admins: We're working on the Beacon service that will proxy Push notifications, make sure you set a public contact email so we can message you when it's ready for your instance!

To close to home Snapchat!!! How do you know this???

Is it the plug or just my food?
Is it the plug or just my food?
It was my food
I’m embarrassed when I see the same delivery person, I can cook but who would build Pixelfed, Loops, Sup and the rest if I have to cook every meal???
dansup

We just shipped a backend update and new TestFlight build to fix in-app registration!

We recommend admins update to resolve this issue.

@pixelfed I ve downloaded your app but it doesn't let me make an account.
I ve tried from your website but I can't create an account as well.
What should I do?
Thanks.

dansup

It's rare to see such popular @pixelfed posts, you love to see it!

I'm working on some big improvements that will make Pixelfed easier to use, and with near feature parity with Mastodon!

Push Notifications, Share Intents and more will be shipping to our official app very soon 🚀

@dansup all I’ve really wanted for a long time now is a native iOS app

harfang

@dansup @pixelfed Can’t wait for push notifications so I can notify extended overseas family of posts!!

Preparing a new Pixelfed app build for TestFlight and Android 🥳

Patrice

@dansup Nice! Gonna check it out later.

I was planning on looking into the code soon. Currently it looks like stuff is still in the works and not yet pushed, right?
Will wait a little bit then 😊

@dansup Please add to your F-Droid repo!

”But Mastodon also has [...] a lot on its plate including integration with Threads“

It's lines like this that makes me completely unable to take those calling for a hard fork of Mastodon seriously.

All Mastodon do for Threads is the same they for any fediverse developer having issues federating with them. (And there's certainly limits to that)

Along with perhaps writing more FEPs to standardize behaviour, which benefits *everyone*

@thisismissem mmm, I think they’re talking about the inevitable scaling needs that come with handling all that federation traffic

Shoq

@thisismissem You often make perfect sense, and I often feel a bit guilty going on about quoted posts. But only because I saw us in a race to capture journalists. That ship has sailed. But we can now pivot and let Threads lure them in, then contribute new tools to support them and everyone else.
