My current publishing software is a combination of this 3 line script that turns a markdown file into an index.html file (add header to file, append converted markdown to file, append footer to file):

gist.github.com/dariusk/0bf5fb

and then a more complex cron job that reads a google spreadsheet I keep containing blog metadata and generates an RSS feed off of it

Not sure I'd recommend the rss piece of it to anyone but the publishing workflow is nice.

Parker Higgins

@darius man that RSS flow is such a fun idea. I wish I could recommend it to friends!

A little piece of personal internet history. I found an old blog post from a friend in Dec 2009 about how bloggers are moving to Twitter.

> It seems that change is in the air at the moment, as a huge number of people are reassessing their relationships with their blogs this winter. [...] In some respects, a lively blog might be [...] a five year mission, at most. However, I also suspect that it is Twitter which is causing a lot of the reconsideration right now"

I do think 2010 was the last year I kept anything close to an active blog. Twitter absolutely ate that energy up for me instead.

Joe Crawford

@darius Twitter definitely was a factor for me as well. 2010 was the last year of my Mom's life which impacted me, and after that it was Instagram that took over for me (backfilled into my blog). But my own blogging is making a comeback. artlung.com/visualization/

Today's modest garden haul: kale, oregano, sorrel

Austin is dunepilled

@darius I’m not afraid to ask the hard questions here

What the heck is sorrel

RIP @craigmaloney

I didn't know him except through occasional interactions on the fediverse but he was consistently a positive presence on here. Condolences to his friends and family.

Interesting. When I make a post on my test Threads account with one-way federation turned on (aka fedi can read my posts, I can't read posts outside Threads, which is all they've enabled so far), and it gets likes from the fediverse, it gets compressed into this "X likes from N servers" notification

Darius Kazemi

I guess one thing this does for now is prevent a "user at racialslur-domain" from liking it and causing a moderation headache

arnicas

@darius ah oops i read it on threads because i assumed you were blaming threads people for not reading

It is sad to me that in 2024 if I search "Moby-Dick by Herman Melville" (no quotes) on Google, the free Project Gutenberg ebook isn't even in the top ten results

@darius

DuckDuckGo: Three text ads at top, image row, then Gutenberg piece listed six down but Wikipedia box prominent in right sidebar at top.

@darius
this is all planned.
create corporate owned AI
train it on all available knowledge
then destroy the public knowledge to prevent competitors
advertise to all ppl to use AI, because it gives better results
have a networo effect, critical mass of AI user, to get exclusive access to all the new knowledge, to cement your position forever.

it is playing out in front of our eyes slowly, but also quite fast.

I enjoy having Kindle "popular highlights" turned on because it lets me go "Really? 438 people highlighted THIS of all things?"

@darius I’m always curious about the feedback loops of that system. How many people paused, noticed, and highlighted that passage themselves because it was already called out as a popular highlight?

Eli the Bearded

@darius Just having the pipeline to record what people have highlighted strikes me as extremely creepy. It is why I have never been a fan of medium.com

kaho

@darius I would like to know if you then go on to highlight unpopular stuff or give in and become the 439th.

@mcc saw the headline "Sun expected to break up Portland clouds Sunday; they return Monday" and thought wow I can't believe the press is trying to pin this one on Sun

And another #Hometown release this morning. There's been another critical upstream security patch from Mastodon. So even if you updated 2 days ago (and thank you for doing it), you should update again:

github.com/hometown-fork/homet

Darius Kazemi

Here is a #Hometown release for those sticking with Mastodon v3:

github.com/hometown-fork/homet

I will note that I expect the Mastodon team to stop supporting security releases for v3 at some point, and I'm not going to be able to implement those myself, so basically once Mastodon stops maintaining v3 I'm going to have to stop as well. So I encourage admins to make a plan to update to v4.

Ben

@darius Thanks. On it. Should it be git checkout v4.0.15+hometown-1.1.1?

Darius Kazemi

Hello #Hometown admins -- a new security patch is available, v4.0.14+hometown-1.1.1.

github.com/hometown-fork/homet

This incorporates this morning's security updates from the Mastodon team so please update your servers ASAP!

I'm gonna be streaming the amazing dice-rolling roguelike SLICE & DICE this Friday with my pals @dubbin and @doougle! 7pm Pacific time, on the Eggplant show Twitch channel. More info at this post:

I was wondering if anyone ever did Bush's hit 1995 song "Glycerine" but it's "Mr. Bean" and yes someone did. Thank you YouTube user "Imagine Dragen"

@darius i love this. Thanks for sharing. i used to watch mr bean with my mom as a kid. Watching the intro to the show now it occurs to me they are implying mister bean is some kind of angel kicked out of heaven, kind of makes the whole thing even more funny.

Edit: not actually down after all, just the default endpoint fonts.googleapis.com doesn't return a 200 (see comment in thread)

Ooof. "down for everyone or just me" is reporting that fonts.googleapis.com is, in fact, down. No wonder half the sites I'm trying to access are stalling. I thought it was a problem with this public wifi network I'm on...

@darius

The browser extension:

"Local CDN"

Means, you will not have these types of issues, but also it improves browsing speed, while also improving privacy.

Take it a step further and import the settings from Local CDN and add them to uBlock Origin, and it gets even better.

The more you know...

erin sparling

@darius ok so believe it or not o got a really helpful answer almost immediately.

TLDR it’s not down, but the url being used to test should be more specific to get the right answer.

fonts.googleapis.com/css2?fami //should always return a 200

fonts.googleapis.com //not necessarily going to return a 200

@darius im just an internet bimbo, no idea how this works but my brother is in tech and is a mentor to me. We talk a lot. And shit is definitely wierd lately

Hello #Hometown admins - we have a release of v4.0.13+hometown-1.1.1 that includes the security fix that the Mastodon team put out this morning.

Please update ASAP!

Release for our older Hometown version coming next, stay tuned.

The year is 2024. Boards of Canada's "Roy G. Biv" is now airport lounge "golden oldies" music.

(brought to you by hearing it in an airport lounge)
