 @drq in this form, it's a definition problem more than anything. An alternative isn't just *to* something, it's *in* (or is it *for*? I dunno) solving a specific problem also. And YouTube's list of problems it solves is, as is appropriate for its size, uniquely large. So there probably isn't going to be just one alternative, but many, for different purposes. Probably with some empty spots where no solution exists, and some empty spots where the problem isn't worth solving. Browsers should really provide a user‐facing option to toggle that without changing setting of your OS (like they already do for light/dark switching). CSS already has enough to read that data.

Just realised that on Mastodon, boosting *is* the algorithm. There's no code trying to cleverly show me stuff it reckons I'd be into, based on what my contacts are into, instead my contacts are saying "I like this, I bet my contacts would like it too" and that is way smarter than any algorithm.  Can you even call it "the algorithm" if it's so transparent and driven by people you intentionally chose to follow intentionally pushing a button to share something with their followers? |
