Oof... that'd be a six-figure cut from what my particularly-competent peers make. It's hard to recruit even with significantly-higher budgets. Yeah, we live in an expensive hiring region, but even in lower cost regions, salaries for worthwhile DevOps experts is still significantly more than what's posted. Not trying to be snarky, but are there places in Germany that are cheaper to live than, say, the rural Midwest or south (but have meaningful broadband)?

@ferricoxide @pbuck @clayton @Mastodon generally i see european developer salaries are low compred to the us, could be they have lower expenses? Housing and food in my area is ridiculously high now (nashville tn). Kubernetes and Terraform expertise is still a big ask anywhere for 48-60 euros.

@ferricoxide Please keep in mind that these are figures for Berlin. Its bit tricky to compare because income tax and taxes for healthcare/social security/pension system are handled differently. But the point is, since your suggestion was "there's former Twitter personnel available" to take on 100% remote jobs (without qualifying by saying *just* the much smaller, European portion of that pool of ex-Twitter personnel), there's an implication of at least *some* US-based ones would be referenced in that availability-pool. As such, US realities apply to those US-based elements of the potential hiring pool.

@ferricoxide It is of course easier to benefit from positive aspects of the European labour market, healthcare and social security systems if you actually live there. The same is true for non-US citizens who are considering to move to the US for an interesting job. I did not mean to deceive anyone. I just wanted to help spread the word and thought this info might be of interest to some former Twitter employees who are on macaw.social. That is all.

@Gargron @pbuck My guess is that the salaries in the US are so much higher, because you need to pay a lot of the stuff yourself that's usually covered by the public or by social insurance in most European countries. That of course does not help you when working remote from the US for companies abroad.

Worked on a gig for a federal customer a few years back. Agency's head was complaining that contractors were demanding more than he, as the agency's head made ...ignoring he had a government pension, lifetime government healthcare, government provided transport and housing – both during the time he was agency-head and after he retired. It was like, "dude: you realize how much all that costs a contractor to provide for themselves??? THAT'S why they demand so much."

Bingo. Health insurance for my wife and me is $12,000/year just in premiums. Add in deductibles and co-pays and a third of that salary is gone. Factor in housing – which has gotten silly in a lot of places – and it's unlikely to be affordable for anyone in the US not doing it as a hobby. :(

@ferricoxide @schmittlauch @Gargron @pbuck Also keep in mind that in Europe you generally have more annual leave (20 days is legal minimum in the UK and Germany), mandatory sick leave, mandatory paid maternity leave, protections from being fired for no reason, etc.

@david @schmittlauch @Gargron @pbuck Right, but the larger point on the various "that's a low compensation" posts is, if you're living in the US, you're unlikely to be able to *afford* to take on that low a pay-rate given the realities of life in the US. Similar problems are run into by US-based employers seeking to expand their hiring-pools by offering 100% remote positions: unless they're paying higher-cost markets' rates, they aren't going to be able to attract talent from those markets.

@Mastodon Thank you for Mastodon, good to see that it is growing. I like to read organization's job descriptions because it often shows what kind of tech they use. I saw "Familiarity with cloud platforms like Google Cloud, AWS, Exoscale or Hetzner" for Mastodon. Presumably that is knowledge so they can build out a privacy respecting system. I hope the plans aren't to build on Google/AWS or it is back to square one with #privacy.

Well, if they are building on Google, AWS, or similar, users lose their privacy to those companies, who own the hardware the websites are on. I'm just hoping they want those *skills*, not that they actually want to deploy on Google/AWS.

I get that. But they can't see the network addresses (IP) of people on websites they don't host. If it is on Google, they can see *all* the traffic.

@stujr The trick to get the coding skill level is by practicing things that are slightly above your skill level. Once you reach that level, raise the bar and repeat. You'll eventually get to that level.

@Mastodon The "Europe" qualification is indefensible for remote work. Either it's supposed to indicate a timezone preference (which would extend to Africa) or its a quirk of the hiring software and needs to be taken down.
