I think it's glorious that there's now a Mastodon server operated by people who used to work for Twitter (macaw.social). I could have never imagined it when I started in 2016.

Broke: Paying 30 bucks a year for a new .social domain Woke: Prepending a social. subdomain to whatever poor random domain you already own that's been sitting neglected and unused for the past several years (This meme is entirely hypothetical do not look at my domain name) @Gargron Itโll be interesting to see if they start contributing to the development. @Gargron @shanelord they are, @andypiper has started contributing to the API.

@Gargron itโs only mid November! Looking forward to whatโs to come in the next few weeks. With the holidays coming up, free time to check out mastodon :blobcatbook: @legallaurak @clive @Gargron i just meant all the folks who have joined since the end of october @legallaurak Well Musk's still sacking people for the stupidest, most egocentric of reasons, so that number is quickly rising OTOH, we now have millions of Twitter users decrying how insufferable it is to choose a site among a list of domains; to not cater to the singular-ized App Store experience of App = Service. The crystallization of that kind of sentiment could bring down the Internet, and I'd bet actors like Elon Musk are already positioning themselves to exploit it for nefarious ends. With technology, there is always the question of irreducible complexity. You cannot use the Internet responsibly without navigating different sites. If too many ppl are insulated from that "cryptic" reality, the structure will come crashing down. Ppl who demand that fleets of powerful machines answer their whims under those conditions are running with knives that are pointed in all directions. There is a line between convenient and dangerously dumbed-down. It isn't elitism. Its expecting drivers to know what road signs mean before they step on the gas. #internetliteracy @Gargron Everyone came here to sit out the tornado. I think I will stay on both and wait for the dust to settle. @mrcopilot @Gargron Deployed more of them just this afternoon, thanks for asking! :partyparrot: @Gargron Prepare for another wave of migration when Musk lets Trump back on Twitter. This wave was the early adopters. Prepare for the early majority. Glad you agree with the concept. It's the only thing that made sense to me when I realized so many others I knew there were staying. We'll need a key for who they are/were like that stupid fedified thing so their transgressions can follow their resumes.
@Gargron I typed that into the search and it says there is no such name (macaw.social) so how do I find it to follow it? Yes, I'm new here ๐คฆโโ๏ธ What I do is go to the instance directly https://macaw.social/directory & look at the user directory and follow ppl with interesting posts. Following sometimes needs you to put in your handle, other times it needs you to copy theirs. IDK why there are two ways. I'd love to be able to browse an instance without leaving mine. I'd love if following users on other instances didn't require copying and pasting. @MadSci Thank you eventually - can't see a directory as such but will have a scroll through there. Appreciate the help on desktop there is a ink on the bottom left on mobile, hit the ... go to the about page and then down the Botton you'll find the profile directory link hope this helps! :) @JesseF8693 @Gargron itโs only meant for ex twitter employees and their friends and family anyway @Gargron Mr. Free Speech is a vile human being. @Gargron thatโs pretty wild. Why should we deprive them of the joy of tooting? Smh #savethetoot @Gargron itโd be great that you work on banning nudity (pornography) and links to terrorist organizations asap as these are rampant since the #twitter exodus. #mastodon #fediverse whatโs the future? @alexhammy209 @whyamihere @seb also, who cares about porn? Just block related hashtags if you don't want it around. This isn't Facebook. @alexhammy209 @seb fact is I did do that yesterday, but no resps so far. In any case, Iโm assuming the platform architecture must share common features across servers, eg AI for semantics and nomenclature, so itโs probably something that needs to be done by mastodon in Germany. Right? @whyamihere the way I understand it detecting stuff like nudity automatically is actually a tricky thing that can be prone to false positives, so I think the responsibility in that case falls more on individual server operators/moderators, especially since some people might actually want nudity in their feeds. Mastodon does have tools to help server operators ban links but again, it's not really something that can be done automatically. @whyamihere @seb The tools are likely there, but it's been a wild week with #ElonGate and all. Like your admin can block whole servers. One thing you can do right away is set all media to be hidden so you don't have like a bunch of s*ldiers/g*erillas getting ready to unalive peaceful civilians in a picture pop up at you. Also if an account posts stuff you don't like, report and all that but at the end of the day it's all wack-a-mole. IANAL. @whyamihere @seb I should point out that, while I'm still not a lawyer, your server sfba.social is based in the US so if you wanted to pursue legal action it would be in US, probably California, courts. I mean, in the unlikely event you found something actionable that the weren't indemnified against. ๐คท @Gargron That is an amazing fact Eugene. Will forward this information to my other social platforms. @Gargron I am glad to be an active user. So far I see so many more benefits in contrast to #Twitter I am glad I did the #TwitterMigration

@Gargron I guess everyone wants to be "the next Twitter Mastodon server".

@Gargron jetzt noch ein online bezahldienstleister und eine autofabrik, dann kannst du dich in ein paar Jahren auf den Mars absetzen @Gargron @Gargron @Gargron Twitter hasn't entirely imploded yet, but it's well in its way... Musk has really shaken things up. But yes, should be interesting to see how it affects the larger landscape of social media. A social network that isn't wholly controlled and eccentric billionaires would be something nice (cough cough, Zuck and Musk). Related question for you: what is Masodons revenue model? I assume its not currently based on advertising? How is it self sustaining right now? @Matthew itls basically donation based. And lots of private effort for the fun of it. I doubt there was ever the idea to make revenue.
@Gargron the revolution proceeds! Love the name also. Of course macaw.social folks would have sophisticated thoughts about birdsโฆ @Gargron that is a kick in the bottom for a certain billionaire @Gargron I hope mastodon can grow sustainably and this is not just a temporary surge. @Gargron HI Eugene! Do you remember the Spanish landing in Mastodon in 2018? We all called you Eugenio. We had a blast that day. Hope we didn't disturb you too much. @Gargron until there is an easier way to hop servers I think I'll just stay here. Currently you basically have to make a new account per server. Mastodon needs a structure where the accounts are handled at a central hub and we can visit or join other servers similar to how Discord functions. @Gargron for $6/month the Sulk Omen could have had his own Mastodon instance, hosted and maintained. Heโs not the brightest kettle in the scullery. |
@Gargron Have .social domains seen in increase in sales in the past month+?
