ME: Hello computer! Please show me what I was doing recently

COMPUTER IN THE 1980's: l cease to exist when I am powered off. Please start whatever you were doing from scratch

COMPUTER IN THE 2000's: Yep here you go champ

COMPUTER IN THE 2020's: I stored 10,000 identical copies of what you were doing in 500 different global datacentres at a carbon footprint equivalent to leaving a semi-trailer idling 24/7 and also sent a copy to the FBI just to be safe. Let me know which one you want and I'll do my best to figure it out. By the way here are 10 things which are similar to what you were doing and 9 of them are ads. Do you like this? Please select "I love this very much" or "I'll be in love with this later" to continue

Just idling?

Wow yours is pretty efficient!

@burgerdrome COMPUTER IN THE 1970's: What time and date is it

TheAnymouseProphet

@burgerdrome
In the 80s I believe the vi editor at least kept a swap file that could usually preserve your recent edits if you didn't save before it powered down, but it's possible that came later.

Leeloo

@SocialJusticeHeals @burgerdrome
Most people didn't have computers that ran vi.

My old Commodore didn't save anything unless I told it to and waited several minutes for it to finish saving.

Sjors

@burgerdrome @SocialJusticeHeals There were many ways to save your work in the 1980s. The post is hyperbolic for comedic effect

timb

@aschuman this will be engraved on my tombstone

@burgerdrome computer in the 2020โ€™s. You blinked. Let me completely refresh this browser window with a whole new set of ads and suggestions - you clearly were not about to click on that post anyway.

Oh you did click on the story - here have some pop ups and a video and a gif and letโ€™s refresh the page with new ads while you are scrolling. You are on your phone? Letโ€™s refresh with a blank page so you canโ€™t actually read the end of the article. Clearly you want to click on this ad (not shown)

CohenTheBlue

@burgerdrome No forced AI if you switch to Linux... I'd start with Ubuntu and with experience move to Debian, the distro Ubuntu is based on. Debian is the most stable experience. You can match packages from less stable / fresher sources. Good to do an install / first try on a virtual machine, like free virtualbox. I personally gravitate toward command line tools because they don't change their interface so it's setting things up how I like only once. Same reason to separate "/" and "/home".

timb

@cohentheblue I really appreciate you leaning into the stereotype of "the guy on Mastodon who suggests installing Linux to strangers"

CohenTheBlue

@burgerdrome Well who else am I gonna suggest it to? People that I know are aware of the option. Why would you even oppose this? What is so untoward about the suggestion to at least try it out, with tips that would make the process easier, from an experienced user?

CohenTheBlue

@burgerdrome For that matter, why would you ever post your problem publicly and then refuse solutions, like you've noted on your profile? You have a lot to think about there. I'm personally a problem solver so I will try to help. Anyway, bye then.

timb

@cohentheblue Please reflect on your assumptions

CohenTheBlue

@burgerdrome If you snub and mock me, I react. I'm not making assumptions, simply using context.

timb

@cohentheblue If you cannot understand that there are inherent assumptions in "offering unsolicited solutions to complete strangers" then I am at a loss as how to explain this to you

Laurens ๐Ÿงข

@burgerdrome @cohentheblue Linux users have no sense of humour. Case in point: my own lack of that specific sense.

Aires

@ElBeeToots @burgerdrome @cohentheblue What's "sense of humour"? Is it in Nixpkgs? Or do I need to compile it? (FYI new folks: these are all questions you should ask if you're considering switching to Linux)

binchicken

@burgerdrome
thank you for a truly spectacular example of this specific type of guy. sorry you had to go through it.

@cohentheblue

ck0

@burgerdrome @cohentheblue 2024: each time someone makes a public joke about computers, ads, AI or online privacy, they have unsollicited ads about Linux from serious people reacting like AIs on an ad-free social network ๐Ÿ˜น

CohenTheBlue

@ck0 @burgerdrome 1) I don't find complaining funny 2) I was hoping someone would actually read the few sentences I thought I put together rather concicely and try. Not interested, ignore and move on.

I haven't seen the Linux ads epidemic you describe, guess your feeds are very different. Before you reply "It was a joke!", you'll understand if I don't find being called AI funny. AI is the whole thing I hoped to steer people away from.

ck0

@cohentheblue @burgerdrome "Not interested, ignore and move on. "
Then apply your own advice.

Evpraksia Revmira

@cohentheblue

it's not worth engaging with people who: complain about things being bad, without doing basic minimum things that help make things better, while also complaining about their *feelings of annoyance* with people who are trying to make things better

Evpraksia Revmira

for people who find linux shills annoying:

literally just skip the post, you can often recognize it by the first line. it's there for people who might be interested, not for you. the world doesn't revolve around you.

for your own mental health, and to avoid you dragging down a perfectly fine conversation just because you felt annoyed at something harmless and decided it's someone else's fault: *please* learn to live with the fact that the world has harmless annoyance in it

The Original Stripey Goodness

@cohentheblue @burgerdrome hoo boy we got a whiny baby here.
My dude, you decided that the facetious joke post was an invitation for you to sealion all the way in.
You're in the wrong here. Just take the L and learn from it.

Finn!

@cohentheblue @burgerdrome
I think the whole dilemma comes from the fact that you didn't understand that the post was an exaggerated parody of the current situation. Your advice is indeed unsolicited and intrusive, almost condescending. I think you have a lot to think about here. And "Anyway, bye then" is absolutely disrespectful.

Finn!

@burgerdrome @cohentheblue Leaning? they threw themselves into the stereotype and embraced it fully

skategoat ๐Ÿ

@finn @burgerdrome @cohentheblue thriving โœจ๏ธ and flourishing โœจ๏ธ as the linux guy

Leeloo

@burgerdrome @cohentheblue
Yup.

Even as a Linux user, these are getting as annoying as (non-animated, non-popover) ads.

toufic

@burgerdrome @cohentheblue i'm more annoyed at the debian recommendation instead of something like mint, and the suggested manual partitioning scheme (separating home and root) to a (supposedly) new user :KEKW:
even linus torvalds said debian was too complicated for him

CohenTheBlue

@toufy @burgerdrome That's why I said "with experience". My recommendation was to start with Ubuntu. Debian allows more control and is on the whole much more stable than Ubuntu once one learns about package pinning for apt and other mechanisms underlying the system. Debian needs a bit of time to set up but on the long run saves you time compared to Ubuntu. It benefits from being almost Ubuntu, which is usually one of the first Linux distros supported by for example government backed software.

helplessduck

@burgerdrome

And you leaned straight into the "person who polices how strangers use free software" stereotype, which is leaps and bounds more insufferable.

@cohentheblue

Tim Chase

@burgerdrome @cohentheblue

Clearly, switching back to DOS is the right answer ๐Ÿ˜‰ #BringBackThe80s

It is a computer. You paid dearly for it. Is it YOUR computer?

If it is running closed-source software: No. This computer will work for some other parties, against your interests.

If it is running open source software: Maybe. But not necessarily.

It your computer is running open source software (including the OS) that you could potentially replace, with versions modified as you please: Then I concede it is really YOUR computer.

@WhiteCatTamer @burgerdrome Will it also be made from nanothin glass that breaks if you so much as sneeze at it and can't be fixed by users but must be returned to a Microsoft licensed repair shop that charge as much for repairs as the cost for a brand new one?

@burgerdrome Computers in 2024 are more like:

Sure, here's a summary of what you did recently:
You got up at 8:32 am, went to the bathroom looking at porn for 7 minutes, then you left for 25 griffith street to buy a car magazine and two cans of red bull at the gas station using your second credit card. While waiting you looked at the follwing instagram pages (...) until you were interrupted by your friend XY who uses an iphone 10 and whom you meet there every other week on mondays. Then, ...
