In the 80s I believe the vi editor at least kept a swap file that could usually preserve your recent edits if you didn't save before it powered down, but it's possible that came later.

Most people didn't have computers that ran vi.

My old Commodore didn't save anything unless I told it to and waited several minutes for it to finish saving.
