All my colleagues have aged DECADES in the last 3 years because of all of these failures allowing COVID to age the shit out of their bodies. Despite the stress witnessing this has taken on me, I haven't, because I've had covid once and got lucky. It's never too late to stand up and do the right thing for you and those around you. #WearAMask @hannu_ikonen that take, that we were traumatised by covid mitigations, and not by the death and destruction caused by the disease and its ongoing effects, is everything that is wrong with public health practice, laid bare @hannu_ikonen “masks won’t work because people won’t wear them correctly, we can’t tell people to wear masks” was a time @64 @hannu_ikonen that's not about whiteness. It is about privilege a bit though; we are all denied the privilege of being safe participating in society without needing to worry about masks, and we have all had to watch our society flail around with shaming and use of force around quarantines and masks followed by denial, exposing the probability that the next time our collective safety is threatened, our society will again leave us to bear the consequences, while maybe punishing us too. @64 @hannu_ikonen To be fair I think you can make a very reasonable and persuasive case for both, it doesn't have to be one or the other. Lockdowns were no doubt necessary, but they evidently did lead to a hole bunch of unintended consequences, people living with abusive partners / families, kids with learning disabilities or who just struggled to adapt or who's schools were ill equipped to help them do so, to name but a few. @hannu_ikonen They think that if they deny it hard enough they'll be safe. It's magical thinking on an institutional scale. @hannu_ikonen I'm an NP, have lost friends who died caring for infected COVID and vaccine deniers, new NP's who will never go back to nursing. Curious if you link the NPD/Trump trance with other extreme belief/behavior distortions @majordopolis if Trump doesn't have both APD & NPD, I'd be blown away. @hannu_ikonen Some friends I haven't seen since school sent me photos this summer. I'm not kidding or exaggerating: they look old enough to be my parents. This isn't me being ageist or in age denial: they truly looked a generation older than me. It was really unnerving. @hannu_ikonen Yup, at 64 I can still run hard around the track a few times because of my own sacrifices but I don't know how long it will be until somebody forces it on me. 😞 Used dbt in the classroom. Middle schoolers were receptive to it. Unfortunately left teaching bc soulless admin @hannu_ikonen I've never read up on DBT validation before. Thank you for sharing the link. I'm partway through and I have to say that most people I know in any context are terrible at Level three. @ShaulaEvans arguably 3 is the most advanced. Requires teasing out underpinning values or important beliefs and connecting them @hannu_ikonen I'd been thinking about 3 a lot lately (without knowing it was "3") because I've witnessed, first and second hand, a lot of people feeling entitled to define someone else or control their narrative at a level that qualifies as covert violence. Tip for the "gotta meet em where they are at folks:" You do that by listening, modeling, and validating the valid. You don't do it by denying reality. You don't do it by feeding denial & modeling adverse coping strategies (such as not masking during a pandemic).

People crave being heard. What they don't crave is cowardice equated as leadership when it comes to public policy that is meant to create a safe space.
None of this denial bullshit solves the problem, makes it better, makes it bearable. It actually perpetuates the insult, the trauma, through a #COVID19 carousel that people cannot disembark from.
White leadership's response to #COVID19 across the board, across all political parties, is a total failure of leadership, courage, validation, empathy, & willingness to stand taut against injustice that is a pervasive, arbitrary risk of disability from infectious disease.

- Interprets and applies to other comments & thoughts
- Validates the valid
- Appreciates the emotion given the determinant causes of it, even anger.
