Godot Engine :godot:

In a collaborative effort with #Meta we are happy to announce: the Godot Editor is now available in #EarlyAccess on the Meta Horizon store!

This means you can develop games right on your headset without the need for an external computer 🥽

@godotengine Meta? The company behind the scourge that is Facebook?! Are you guys out of your minds?!

vvampa⁂

@Ertain @godotengine it's meta (& godot) or unity. and unity is so much worse lol. all of meta's platforms are pretty trash but i appreciate their support for open source stuff (which i'm certain is ill-founded to undermine competitors, but still...)

Ertain

@wampa It's great when they support open source projects. But who knows of this won't turn sour? I wouldn't trust Meta with my trash.

vvampa⁂

@Ertain yeah, that's fair! there's no affordable, untethered linux mixed reality headset out there yet, so until then i'm fine compromising and using a meta product, which is surprisingly high-quality (tho a mostly-walled garden). i was initially holding out for the simulavr standalone linux headset, but it still isnt out yet, & it's also $2,700 (vs $500 quest 3) 😹 hopefully for everyone's sake we all get better options in the future!

@godotengine this is the first time I've wanted to get into VR. I'm still not going to touch anything developed by Meta but I love how this looks in principle. Though I can't imagine coding in something like this.

Bastiaan Olij

@pidgeon_pete @godotengine with a bluetooth keyboard and mouse, the experience is exactly the same as coding on desktop but on a giant virtual screen.

@godotengine This is so cool! What‘s next? The AVP? The Pico 4?🤩

@godotengine FYI others reading: meta quest 3 or meta quest pro minimum

I got all excited to try this but my meta quest 2 isn't compatible :blobfoxsad: #godot #vr

@godotengine just me and I guess one person doesn't really count, but my estimation of your business ethics is now extremely extremely extremely low

CJR

@phanjam @godotengine

Why? Because they make Godot available on as many platforms as possible? Isn't that core to the idea of open source?

I think you misunderstood the announcement. The fact that you can now download Godot from the Meta store doesn't mean Meta has any influence on Godot, or that they could change the projects direction. There are plenty of other ways of installing Godot, too.

I recommend reading this toot (by a Godot maintainer) for reference:

@cjr @godotengine
wasn't reacting to the availability part. rather...
"This means you can develop games right on your headset without the need for an external computer"
gives meta some more power.

@godotengine

How about those of us who have an Index, and wouldn't touch the Meta Horizon store or the Meta anything else with a 10,000 foot pole? Can we do this too?

Rexx Deane 🏳️‍🌈

@aearo @godotengine you'd want to use existing solutions - desktop view in VR for the editor, I guess. This is more about streamlining workflow for headsets where the app has to be uploaded to it to run.

Bastiaan Olij

@aearo @godotengine I work with Godot and my Index daily. The only thing I miss is being able to see and interact with my Godot IDE in headset so I don't need to take the headset off while testing/tweaking.

kaitlin

@godotengine hopefully it's less jank than the unreal engine xr editor

kaitlin

@godotengine oh i can't use it anyways because i have a quest 2

Joracle

@godotengine what is happening with all the hate towards Godot being available on one more platform? And what do you guys mean about "working with facebook" being bad? Godot is also available on windows so shouldn't the same apply on them "supporting a toxic environment"?

Smorty [she, her]

@godotengine I was more okay with Microsoft funding the C# development, which kinda made sense to me. A fast programming language anyone can use (even if it apparently runs best on winblows).

What you built here looks incredibly useful and impactful for developers, who specifically own a headset by one of the biggest companies. As you can tell by my comment, and others comments, we don't like this approach at all, especially for a FOSS program, which should focus on its freedom and usability.

Dear Godot Team, you can turn this into something beautiful. I don't know how much work this would be, but expanding this application to the pcvr space would make this a useful tool for almost every XR developer! Something where no one sees downsides and everyone gets to have a piece of the XR Godot Editor pie, as long as they bring their own plate (or headset in this case).

I really hope that this is the future goal here, and that the work with Meta her was used more as a starting point and less of a destination.

Bastiaan Olij

@smorty @godotengine there is nothing inherently Meta that has been added to the Godot source.

It's just that HorizonOS is the first to offer a feature set that makes this approach viable, I'm sure others will follow in their footsteps soon.

Metas support has been instrumental in bringing XR support in Godot forward in a way that benefits all platforms.

It really saddens me how critical people are of them while they have done so much for Open Source and Open Standards.

8Bit

@godotengine This is (despite the Twitter-level comments) incredibly cool news. I have plans deploying to the Quest and this might be incredibly helpful in doing performance trial runs. Awesome job and thanks to all the devs!

Yo Soy Freeman

@memoriesin8bit @godotengine

Yeah, i hate meta the most, but having Godot not only working but doing so in a good and well integrated way is fantastic news having in mind it seemed like it was going to be a unity monopoly not so long ago.

At least now the quest is a more open environment and is very possible that lots of people discover the engine via the store. So i think is an overall win for everyone!

Disco Cat

@memoriesin8bit @godotengine yes it is. The more people can see and use Godot the better. One more proprietary platform won't hurt the project.

AlexTECPlayz

@godotengine This is really cool! Hopefully this is only the beginning - you could expand this to PCVR in the future, it'd be really helpful.

Owl New Worlds 🔢 making Nokoma

@godotengine So what's the point with people here? We should just all be happy to see our beloved engine Godot even more accessible! If you don't like Meta (which is also kinda my situation) then just don't care about this news.

Lorenz

@godotengine wow, that sounds amazing! I've never used godot, so I'm wondering how well git can be used. And does it include an xr editor, or is the xr mode only for running the app?

Using Unity with Link has been really annoying and even got worse over time.

Bastiaan Olij

@l0drex @godotengine this is something we need to explore further.

In theory GIT is available for Android and may thus be usable on a Quest.

And in theory Godots git plugin should be able to interact with it allowing you to use git from within the IDE.

But I've never tried it in practice.

CJR

@godotengine

It's great seeing Godot on as many platforms as possible! :godot:

Just out of curiosity: Is there a public statistic showing how many people downloaded Godot from each source?

Bastiaan Olij

@cjr @godotengine Sadly not all platforms expose this. Steam doesn't, and I can't at first glance see any such metrics publicised by Meta.

We do know that the editor on play store has been downloaded over 500.000 times.

Jasper Riedel

@godotengine incredible work! I look forward to having a play and maybe combining this with @Orchestrator for a nice portable prototyping environment.

Rokojori

@godotengine Extremely cool work! I think this will help me a lot building the puppetry/theatre vr app. I think I told some already... And ignore the haters :P This is great work to be proud of :) ❤️❤️🔥🔥🔥

LiquidParasyte

@godotengine I'm begging every foss enthusiast to please fucking read before you slag on #GodotEngine

It's a game engine that can do VR, and they made their engine work on the biggest standalone VR platform

They aren't firing up 20 billion datacenters to crunch your kids and pets into LLM mush, they're just porting their engine to Quest. God

LiquidParasyte

@godotengine anyway, kudos on the collab work to expand further! Less monoculture in VR within Unity and Unreal is always good.

Would love to see this work expand to PCVR/XR as well :blobfoxpeek:

Syd 🔜 GodotCon

@godotengine I'm wondering if I can get it to work on my Vive Focus 3 as well now... hmmm.

Smorty [she, her]

@godotengine I love how the overwhelming response is 'Meta? Ew'. I feel that if the Meta OS was open, we would be much happier and more understanding with this development decision.

Stu

@godotengine I had no idea Godot supports the Oculus headset! By chance, my son just approached me to help him start making games for it, so I was going through the rigmarole of setting up Unity. Will try Godot instead.

Bastiaan Olij

@tehstu @godotengine we have *only* supported VR development since 2018 :P

Stu

@mux213 @godotengine oh blimey. Thank you, I honestly didn't even think to check!

I also recently learned there are Arm64 Linux builds, so I can mess about with my Pi while the lad works on his Oculus.

Bastiaan Olij

@tehstu @godotengine and I recommend checking out the community resources here:

docs.godotengine.org/en/stable

My own youtube channel and Malcolm Nixons are good places to start for XR information.

Good luck with helping your son. It's a great way to bond.

tomáš א mládek

@godotengine whoa, this might just make me upgrade from my Quest 2 and finally give Godot a proper try. Very cool!

:blobcatlaptop: gravitos :blobcatcomfsip:

@godotengine now if only quest wasn't backed by a piece of shit company.

good job guys!
