I'm sure it is just a coincidence that the disability and long-term sickness rates in three nations starting rising at the start of the #COVID19 pandemic and are still rising almost five years later, despite the fact the global health emergency ended.
@augieray@mastodon.social The UK has also had substantial cuts to healthcare funding. It would be useful to know if that isn't true in terms of the US and Spanish systems.
@augieray Sorry, but there's something odd with these data. The figures for US (~6 million people) and UK (~2 million) are very far away from Spain's (30% of adult population!!! That's over 10 million people!).
The link you posted for the source of Spain data in another answer doesn't seem to be correct (it's a survey on the perceived quality of public health system).

It is truly a bizarre and discomforting experience to spend the morning reviewing a dozen scientific studies demonstrating #COVID19 damages brains, reproductive systems, livers and other organs and then go to my Facebook feed to see photos of all my friends in planes, at concerts, and in crowded bars without masks. I sure hope there isn't a population-wide level of declining health and regret in the years to come. 😷 😨
@augieray Rest assured, there will be. Too many people have been infected too repeatedly - and many of them are crucial workers, like doctors, nurses, medtechs, teachers, social workers, therapists.
@augieray I avoid crowds and haven't eaten out or been to an entertainment event for years, but after getting all of COVID/flu/RSV shots earlier this fall I decided it was safe to do without a mask at grocery stores etc where I don't have lingering exposure to any one person. When my vaccine starts to wear off, or if there's another wave, I'll mask up everywhere again, and for sure I would still be wearing a mask now if I lived with or visited an elderly or immuno-compromised person.
I feel sorry for all the news companies that launched research for stories on “Who is Tom Emmer?” only to have him drop out of the race for Speaker in four hours.
Conservatives on both sides of the Atlantic are getting effective at creating new measures of time! A Scaramucci (or Mooch) is 11 days. A Liz Truss is 44 days. And now an Emmer is four hours! (“Man, it's only 1 pm? I have a whole Emmer before I can kick off from work!”)
"He's not conservative enough." ??? When are we going to see some of these people thrown under the bus decide to caucus with the Dems so we have a functioning government? Republicans are not a serious option.
@augieray thanks for this- the only reliable numbers we have are going to be from other countries as our own citizenry (American) have dubbed COVID “just a cold” and aren’t testing, tracing or isolating (just my personal experience.) So in fact we should assume that the situation is more extreme in the US than in Japan. As to the masks conversation: I and my husband have worn KN95 since 2020 and have dodged infection BUT we also follow all the precautions.
@augieray On the other hand... Doesn't this mean that COVID will *never* be over, and so many measures we take to deal with it should be measures we can live with long-term?
>The Republican governor signed the law after it was approved by the Legislature earlier in May with only Republican support. Several states are embracing a rollback of child labor laws in response to complaints from business owners that they can’t find enough workers. Iowa’s April unemployment rate was 2.7%.
“Until a drag queen walks into a school and beats eight kids to death with a copy of To Kill A Mockingbird, I think you’re focusing on the wrong shit.”
@augieray "1619" is a *bigger book*(and a thought-provoking read, don't misunderstand)
Wait...you weren't looking for tips on fucking people up without recoil, were you? No wonder I don't get those shower invites anymore....
This is the funniest thing I've seen in a while. Someone asks #ChatGPT to rewrite a simple statement (sitting outdoors enjoying a bagel) in a way that cannot possibly cause any offense to anyone.
Is It Equitable to Protect Corporate Leaders From #Covid19 More than Employees and Customers?
My new LinkedIn article explores the policies at the #WorldEconomicForum, the current guidance from WHO and the CDC, and how we might make better, more considered and more informed decisions. As we enter the fourth year of the pandemic, how might we view the #Diversity of health risks people face, #Equity for everyone, and #Inclusion for those who must or chose to be safer?

@augieray don’t worry, our grandkids can pay for it. where should we brunch?
