 First (thinner) is Windows ClearType, second is macOS Quartz. Both are screenshots of the Imperial (NYT) font on Chromium. Personally, I prefer the Mac grayscale antialiasing. Something something strong opinions loosely hold me dude if i hear one more MSNBC anchor blaming the election loss on harris being too woke i’m gonna blow a fuckin gasket. this was the least progressive campaign in my lifetime. they campaigned with the Cheneys on “the border crisis” and schmoozed about owning glocks. if they went any further right they would fall into the atlantic ocean.

@samhenrigold The crazy part here, is that this is *provably* BS, even with whatever little data we have right now. We *know* that Trump didn't add any votes relative to past elections, he lost some. Harris, on the other hand, failed to get people to actually go out and vote altogether. These people pointedly did not go and vote for the guy *more to the right* of her… @samhenrigold Yep, people once again voted against the status quo and an economy that looks great on paper but doesn’t work for them. Sadly I don’t think most of the things we worry about mattered. okay first of all it’s not a “sinkhole” forming in my basement. it is an Infinitely Vertical Moment and it’s CHIC. |

@samhenrigold I like macOS’ rendering better too. FreeType on Linux as configured in Ubuntu and Fedora look pretty similar to macOS rendering (though antialiasing and hinting are more tweakable there).
ClearType’s aggressive pixel snapping made more sense back when really bad low resolution LCDs were common (low pixel density == hard to read with mac style rendering) but these days even cheap laptops have ok-enough screens that it’s not really necessary.

@samhenrigold interestingly, I like the thinner one on a non-high-res image like this where I can see the pixels. But on a high-dpi display (which I'm almost always using) the macOS rendering wins every time.
Would be curious to see a rendering method that uses both subpixel-rendering (the blues and the reds) -and- gray anti-aliasing.
