Rainy day. Who am I to disagree. Although we still have a lot of water in California compared to the historical average.

@J12t the goals seem great, I just wonder if it could be a bit dangerous for the person using it... I have heard of spam linked to ad tracking, it would worry me a bit

simple-scran

@J12t This fulfills the prophecy. It is known.

Victor Villas

@J12t Interesting. I might adopt this one for the websites that are ad supported that I do feel a bit guilty about blocking ads. This hurts the wallet of who we’re supposed to hurt.

I had a Mastodon account before this one, I think, but I can't find it.

I joined this one in August 2017 according to my profile. Maybe had it for a few months before that. Well, well, mists of time ...

“immigrants are “poisoning the blood of our country”” according to a certain repeat presidential candidate.

How many steps from here to camps and worse? Not many Imho.

This is an amazing spreadsheet by @eloquence:

Aww, thanks for the shout-out!

Always appreciate pings about new notable exits -- especially for accounts that primarily post in languages other than English or German.

Also, somebody should start firestarter.social where we collect all the Ian-style firestarters in the fediverse. Just sayin'

Starting to listen to @mike's podcast with @cubicgarden on the #Fediverse and BBC's Mastodon project ....

So Ian has been "starting fires" (his job title) for 20 years at the BBC. (I relate, I often feel like a fire starter myself.)

@cubicgarden says the ability to verify accounts on social media -- without pay or other third-party rules -- is critical for an organization such as the BBC.

Trust is essential.

@J12t @mike @cubicgarden thanks for the req. will add it to my growing list (:

What are good reasons for choosing one #fediverse instance over another?

As of yesterday, there is a good one: blocking policy.

Many users in my feed seem surprised that they can’t follow the (very few) threads.net accounts that are active in the fediverse as of right now, and that’s because their instance blocks meta.

Other good reasons are moderation policy, funding model, likely sustainability over the long term etc. But none of them are as clear cut as blocking meta or not.

DJ Sundog - from the toot-lab

@J12t yes, all the things that were important about choosing where in the fediverse to reside last week are now secondary to whether or not your chosen place gives you access to the Torment Nexus. obviously. let's center the Torment Nexus.

Supergrobi

@J12t out of interest, does following any of the Threads accounts work for you? Tusky and web UI only show that I sent a follow request.

Johannes Ernst

Btw, @cubicgarden, I’d love to have a discussion on how #threads entry into the #fediverse impacts how you/your colleagues at the #bbc see what is going on and what is or becomes possible.

Maybe too early, but worth thinking about Imho.

Johannes Ernst

Hey @TechCrunch, re your piece on #activitypub and #threads, my notes from last week’s meeting at #meta answer some of the questions in your article.

@J12t @TechCrunch

Thanks for this post and summary of the meeting. I found it very interesting.

@J12t I have to admit my first thought on reading this is wondering why the W3C is not more involved in driving standards for the Fediverse. Efforts seem pretty haphazard at the moment. I don't mean to disparage efforts like this meeting at all, but some organization seems lacking. I guess this is pretty common early in the lifetime of a technology, though.

Johannes Ernst

I didn’t realize #techcrunch was in the #fediverse. Only noticed because I saw the #mastodon logo on an article today.

Help wanted!

Today’s #activitypub #threads announcement produced a lot of press, per news.google.com/search?q=Activ

We are trying to collect #fediverse #news coverage at lemmy.world/c/fediverse_press (fediverse native on #lemmy!) but we are not collecting nearly as much as has been written. Help us collect the articles, at least the good ones?

db0

@J12t want me to hook on the @tagginator over to !fediverse_press? It could help a bit with microblogging discoverability through tags.

Johannes Ernst

Hey @mosseri, welcome to the #fediverse!

Mastodon says you have 4 followers. That can’t be right, but I understand you guys are rolling out things gradually, which might explain things and which obviously is a good idea.

Much opportunity, and potential peril, await us all. I hope the community finds a constructive way to navigate it all. It’s a new world for sure.

@J12t @mosseri I'm seeing the accurate followers count on @phanpy , although clicking the followers or following links doesn't successfully load the list of profiles yet.

Johannes Ernst

So apparently different Mastodon instances show different follower counts. Although 4 vs 640k is a bit of a difference …. :-)

Blake Hensley

@J12t @mosseri this is the first post that I’ve seen be positive about being able to federate with threads. I think it’ll be kind of cool to be honest.

Johannes Ernst

Certainly the #Threads people are having some hiccups with their phase 1 #ActivityPub rollout today.

I can't follow @mosseri@threads.net from here because, apparently, wait for it ... an SSL certificate error!

Always very gratifying to see when the big guys have the same problems as us little guys :-)

Gabe Wachob 🐵🐴👨‍💻👨‍🎤🐮

@J12t SSL verification is one of those "hard at scale, simple in the small" problems :D

You know... like privacy and data stewardship ;)
