This month, 10 years ago, Edward Snowden changed the world.

His revelations about mass surveillance were a wake-up call and may have bought us years in our fight for privacy and encryption. 🔒

Here are 3 illegal NSA programs that he exposed! 👇

1/4 🧵

Tuta

1. PRISM

A program under which the NSA collects internet communications from various US companies such as #Google #facebook #twitter under the FISA Amendments Act of 2008 to turn over any data that match court-approved search terms.

2/4 🧵

The New Paranoiac :fedora:

@Tutanota I started my whole privacy journey when The Looming Tower miniseries premiered on Hulu back in 2018. To see the FBI and CIA fail so spectacularly to work together to stop the 9/11 attacks and save lives after all the information they had on Al-Qaeda made me question for the first time in my life: Why would we give these agencies more power over our lives?

Tuta

What would you do for a free 55-inch 4K TV?

1. You must use the TV daily.

2. There's no way to hide constant ads.

Is surveillance capitalism acceptable if companies are being upfront about it and "you’re in on it"?

@Tutanota You could literally just take a computer screen or if possible a professional grade screen like the ones used in stores that dont have trackers and Android built-in and connect a small PC to your TV, many ISPs these days offer Digital TV for example

Tony

@Tutanota I only use my TV for gaming, I don't have cable or anything like that. I hate ads

Power Of The Negative

@Tutanota No I listen to BBC radio as advert free still. If They advertise Themselves I have off button. Off button is best tech not AR or VR.

For added security, turn on Screen Lock by storing your password in the Tutanota app. Then go to Settings > Login and choose your Unlock method. When Screen Lock is enabled, you’ll be required to open Tutanota similar to how you would unlock your phone – by entering your PIN, password, Touch ID, or Face ID.

Happy encrypting. 🔒

@Tutanota I believe that a "system independent" PIN lock would be a nice option to have, just in case your device credentials have been previously compromised, rendering this system PIN/biometrics useless. Am I being too paranoid?

Tidbit

@Tutanota Being able to create an unlock PIN that's independent of the system PIN/pw would be appreciated (PM has this feature by the way). 😊

10 years ago, Edward Snowden changed the world. The 'Snowden leaks' were a wake-up call: The conspiracy theory that Secret Services were monitoring our private conversations has proven to be true.

Public backlash after this revelation might have bought us years in our fight for privacy. However, today governments around the world are again pushing for more surveillance. This must be stopped! 🔒

>The conspiracy theory that Secret Services were monitoring our private conversations has proven to be true.

Conspiracy Theory???

My friends, the US "Church Committee" was in 1975. The first US example I'm aware of is that telegraph wires were physically rerouted *through the Whitehouse* during the US Civil War for interception. If a person was not aware of this desire and capability for State Surveillance they were either niave, or history had dimmed the memory...

>It also unearthed Project SHAMROCK in which the major telecommunications companies shared their traffic with the NSA (while officially confirming the existence of this signals intelligence agency to the public for the first time).

@Tutanota as a gay man on the left of the political spectrum, I can honestly say the surveillance state doesn’t make me feel safe. It makes me feel unsafe. Very unsafe. It’s embarrassing as an American that the EU is outpacing us in privacy preserving laws.

It’s clear that a generation of legislators who didn’t know how to use a smartphone 15 years ago allowed a small minority of that generation who did silently enact a technocratic authoritarian hegemonic police state. No shade only tea. 🍵🫖

Interesting: ProtonMail finally admits that Germany "is a good choice given Germany’s strong privacy laws and culture that make it almost as strong as Switzerland."

For once, we couldn't agree more. 😀

We'd even argue Germany is much better as we do not have data retention laws (which would be against the German constitution) - while in Switzerland large tech companies are forced by law to retain data: tutanota.com/blog/posts/data-r

@Tutanota I think Germany itself is not the problem
more so the European Union sometimes attempting big privacy interventions
e.g. chat control

Puff

@Tutanota do not expect any real privacy within the 14 Eyes. Or would you like to append your take that people in Germany get *some* ***surface layer*** privacy only?

@Tutanota - “Data linked to you” and “Data used to track you” is 2 different things in Apple App Store, correct? Check Twitter’s App Privacy disclosure.

I don’t know if it’s just me, but the post speaking of zero tracking and GMail screenshot from App Store seems not relatable.

Tuta

Google wants to track you - no matter what. Now it is threatening to take down Invidious, a popular platform on which you can watch YouTube videos without being tracked!

Well worth the price. Used them for years. Popped over to proton mail for a year and now back on Tutanota for at least the next two years. Glad to be back and happy to see all the improvements that have been made in that year including offline support.

@Tutanota @techlore @thenewoil NOPE i leaved your for that so trying to rewrite why it's good will not make people like me change their mind.
Sad for you since I'm now the CSO you where at that 👌 to have a corporate subscribe (and since I do not have habit to help people I don't like).

Bad move for u (but it's not like I hinted it before reaching my actual post) but your competitor actually thanks you I guess.

@Tutanota - I am interested to know the following since the change in pricing especially from the 10 million users:
1. Numbers of users leaving your service.
2. Number of users who upgraded to new plans.
3. Number of users scaled down their usage such as storage, custom domains.
4. Number of users who increased their use of storage and custom domains which proves new plans have helped them.
5. Count of emails that are sent to Tutanota emails which are encrypted than to standard emails.
