@Gargron prepare to be utterly disappointed when he starts a war with some random country in the next 2-3 years and comes after Mastodon for hosting "extremist" leftists.

So is there gonna be a livestream today

@Gargron

Count the stars! Count the sand of the sea, count the waves! It's LIVE or bust!

Alkenes🧙‍♂️

@Gargron The Vox youtube channel is also streaming if that's available in your region.

@Gargron That was a really good read.

Also the error message shown in it is a thing of beauty.

@Gargron Thanks for posting.
My 2-bobs-worth.....Been using Signal for a few years now...and it's initial product didn't have the "bells and whistles" like WhatsApp, but it has improved significantly...but one thing has been consistent ( as far I know), the security is pretty cool...
Only biggest issue is the size of the app/files....unlike WhatsApp there's no "relatively easy way" to migrate all media or even the app/file to external SD card...but suspect that is also due its security ethos..

Jesse

@Gargron I'm not keen on Signal. The UI itself seems alright. What I'm not a fan of is the management/leadership.

A privacy app built for "privacy" should be very easy to download without an app store, yet they promote getting it from known app stores. They also anchor fear to the standalone APK download for android, labelling it the "Danger Zone". If the app and service is as secure and trustworthy as perpetuated than why anchor fear to the non-app store version?

"#Parler website appears to be back online and promises to 'resolve any challenge before us'"

Apparently, they were picked up by the hosting company Epik which also hosts Gab and The Daily Stormer.

@Gargron the sad thing is that it looks like we are getting two seperate internet now.
One for the right and one for the left.
This will only radicalice people even more on both sides.

Maybe I'll hook it up to an accurate user count bot at some point, but anyway: There are 2,728 Mastodon servers online today and on them, there are 252,893 monthly active users, a number that increased by 45,517 since Jan 11th.

@Gargron That's interesting, my node is aware of 3,200 mastodon instances, but some of those might be forks.
The Broken

@Gargron A lot to do with how twitter is behaving nowadays, I guess.

@Gargron the first episode was so accurate trying to replicate 50's b/w sitcoms

Johannes

@Gargron nice, thought it looked quite nice. Will give it a shot then

Zeno Libre

@Gargron I read good reviews and expected more. Slightly disappointed with the first episode but the end of the second gives some hope for the third. Not quitting yet.

Finally an article that mentions Mastodon on Techcrunch, not as positive as one would hope but hey, I'll take what I can get. I think there's one good quote from me in there.

@Gargron I don't understand why these fascists even need to mentioned in that article.

You are talking about the damn technology not the damn people using it other then the amount of users currently using it, I see no reason why they needed to attach such hateful people with Mastodon.

But what the hell do I know?

JoelR

@Gargron Not really sure what you expected -- you built a decentralized network, whose primary audience is high risk communities. Normal communities don't need Mastodon.

I once heard even if people are talking bad about you, at least they're still talking about you....

Siegfried and Roy were my favourite characters in Father of the Pride which I have watched on a bootleg DVD on a portable DVD player when I was a teen

What a wild, fever dream memory. I'm giving it another shot now, lol.

I've gotta say, really liking Notion.

@Gargron really enjoyed that it natively comes with LaTeX support. However, I agree with other people that its functionality can be overwhelming. I use Joplin now for simple notetaking

chrisfiebelkorn

@Gargron

Notion is great! I migrated from EverNote after their pricing fiasco and haven't looked back.

@Gargron I struggled with the controls in this game on oculus so much. It’s the only game thus far to give me motion sickness in VR

@Gargron 😬 it is a bad idea but they could do it correctly if they implemented rules that didn't break the nation's laws (and allow the networks to ban for that) and only apply them to social networks larger than a certain portion of the population. Then, no large company would be able to unfairly censor people (within an extent).

Asimech

@Gargron So.
Social media services would _have to_ delete illegal content, b/c of course.
But _have to_ keep all legal content.

That's already a "not worth it" level of effort to moderate, but then there's a little thing called "other countries" and the fact different countries have different laws.

So every country would get it's own "filtered" version and each service has to have at least one server in each country to be able to host content illegal elsewhere, or what?

The Broken

@Gargron contrary to popular belief, this is the way to go.

Ruffy

@Gargron relocated the mastodon-servers to your home? :scremcat:
Guess they'd be a good alternative to central heating
