"#Parler website appears to be back online and promises to 'resolve any challenge before us'"

businessinsider.com/parler-web

Apparently, they were picked up by the hosting company Epik which also hosts Gab and The Daily Stormer.

@Gargron I thought Gab claimed they ran their own servers?

@Gargron

Haven't used Parler, but watching the drama of them getting deplatformed has caused me to take a more serious look into what services I use and which of those services uphold my privacy and value my freedoms. I'm currently going through and replacing as much as I can with more freedom and privacy loving services now.

Getting tired of this virtue signalling fascist cancel culture.

King Vitaman II

@phoenixbyrd @Gargron is the implication from this toot that cancel culture is fascist because some people decided that they didn't want fascists using their app stores or virtual servers? Because if your take-away from the whole Parler thing is "Poor parler, those mean fascists deplatformed them." then A) you're probably on the wrong website, and talking to the wrong lead dev, because Gargron is explicitly anti-fascist, and B) go fuck a fire and die

phoenixbyrd

@sexybenfranklin @Gargron

My take away is fascists love to shut down speech and differing opinions and only value same think. So yea. If Mastadon promotes same think and doesn't value free speech then I suppose I might be on the wrong platform.

I'm not a huge fan of childish cancel culture and I haven't used parler, but I do value free speech and will happily defend FREE SPEECH regardless of who's opinions is what. I don't have to agree with an opinion to defend free speech.

@sexybenfranklin @Gargron

But thank you for your virtue signaling response. It was very refreshing... not.

Eugen Rochko

@phoenixbyrd @sexybenfranklin You will not get sympathy for Parler here. "Free speech" as a concept is a) only relevant in regards to the government b) not absolute, as there are many exceptions, incl. hate speech in Germany c) not an exemption from social consequences, such as private businesses not wanting to associate with you

phoenixbyrd

@Gargron @sexybenfranklin

oof yea... looks like I'm on the wrong platform.

Governments don't grant rights folks. Sad to hear that's what's thought here. Welp... enjoy whatever revolving rights your respective governments allow you to have when and for how long they allow you to have it.

I'll keep searching for other avenues where rights and freedoms are respected and fought for.

Igor

@phoenixbyrd @Gargron @sexybenfranklin by "here", do you mean this server? Mastodon is a federated platform so there is no need to convince or pressure the devs to be "on your side", they can't harm you even if they waned to. Worst case, you'll get kicked out from a certain server but there are thousands more and you can even host your own. There are no better alternatives, as far as I know, and effective censorship is not technically possible.

Igor

@Gargron well, that was quick 😀 There is so much drama nowadays.

Marty Heyman

@Gargron I guess they’ll make good money hosting “free speech” sites. It’s sad people don’t think of decentralizing onto the Fediverse instead.

Eugen Rochko

@camelion I'd actually rather prefer they stay where they are so they act as a lightning rod for all the people we don't want here

Graylik

@Gargron Central location problem. Gonna be taken down again.

@Gargron

"We've teamed up with the nazis, but we're definitely not nazis."

Eugen Rochko

@ubiety I don't think there was any pretense in the first place

Jesse

@Gargron This does not sound good to me. If you have multiple platforms that really powerful weasels don't like running on a single server/provider then I presume it would be easy enough to banish said server/provider and knock out the platforms in a triple whammy.

Jeder 😺

@Gargron afaik parler has some rather ridiculous hardware requirements only aws would be able to fulfill so this will be fun

casmithva

@Gargron, Epik is the domain registrar and DNS provider. The IP resolves to ddos-guard, which, if a report from Krebs earlier this month is to be believed, is quite suspicious and possibly running afoul of U.S. sanctions. If this is truly the best they can do, then this ain't good.

@Gargron This guy on Twitter seems to have fished some server specs from them. Don't know the validity of it.

WATERB~1.EXE

@Gargron if those Parler users had even minimal tech understanding, they wouldn't trust anything made by the Parler developers to be a private place.

Then again, "understands tech" and "Parler user" probably have little overlap

Aage Johan Sundvor

@Gargron the sad thing is that it looks like we are getting two seperate internet now.
One for the right and one for the left.
This will only radicalice people even more on both sides.
