Organic Maps

@ploum @organicmaps @peertube Organic Maps is amazing because it works fully offline. And OSM is great in general because of all the small things that are marked there. There's a single small water fountain beyond security at the Hamburg Airport, and it's tucked away on a separate floor so you'll only see it if you happen to go to one of the few gates there (I assume the shops that sell water in plastic bottles lobbied for this). But OSM has it, as well as the gates, defibrillators & more!

Organic Maps

@watmildon Being able to find individual water fountains, bike parking spots, benches, etc is one of my favourite features of @organicmaps ! I've taken to micromapping all the local parks in case it helps someone find a shady place to hang out on a hot day. :)

@caos @fedibikes @ulfi @keno3003 @organicmaps wir haben gerade ne Woche Wanderurlaub im Berchtesgadener Land gemacht und ausschließlich organic maps benutzt, ich habe Komoot keine Sekunde vermisst.

The May 2024 Organic Maps update supports bookmarks and tracks sorting by name, paved paths are white, and unpaved ones are brown. And there are so many other changes and fixes, thanks to our contributors! Update and enjoy, and don't forget to update maps too. And donate to support the open-source, community-driven, privacy-focused maps project! @organicmaps what's the best channel to keep updated and be able to use AndroidAuto? GPlay? F-Droid? Directly from GitHub via Obtanium?

@organicmaps
I'm a new user of OM and I like the easy handling, but there is one issue, I can't find a solution for. How is it possible to multiple delete lists or favorites?
I accidently imported hundreds of them and so I had to remove them all one after each other...
Also it would be perfect if OM could be used "on the water" together with seacharts...
Record and save tracks seem to be already on your Todo-List.
Thanks for your great work. :-)

@organicmaps
Is there actually a roadmap where you can see what is planned and perhaps the sequence in which this will happen? Kind regards and keep it up.

Note also that I as a user can (and do) use this map as a note-taking device: every time I find a shop that I'd like to re-visit, I make sure I have them on the map, incl opening hours and other contacts. @streetcomplete and @everydoor are great tools for this, but @organicmaps also allows doing this straight from the app! 😍

This way, every time I write some of this down for my own use, everyone can profit from it.

Organic Maps

@organicmaps note that google returned only SIX results here. Out of which one is out of business and one is a duplicate. Which leaves us with four.

@organicmaps returned ~25 results, and while not all of them are strictly-speaking cafΓ©s, most of them would be fine to sit down for a coffee, or have an obvious relation like having "CafΓ©" in the name.

It's insane that google even fails to find shops like "Columbus CafΓ©" which is a french competitor to Starbucks, and which they *do* know about.

TIL that @organicmaps has a (very WIP, but still) desktop app, and so now I can produce side-by-side comparisons. VoilΓ  the query for "cafΓ©" in

Note also how the information is shown much more explicitly on the OrganicMaps view. The google map only becomes useful to / once you zoom all the way in. Somehow their designers seem to be afraid of contrast or sth. 🀷

I just love how is so much better, thanks to all involved! 🫢

@organicmaps

Organicmaps is just so damn smooth!

It is a shame that OSMAnd+ is so slow and bad at loading, and has a clunky UI.

OrganicMaps has way too little features for me, like custom routing, more infos, etc.

Arcane

@organicmaps I really like OM and I use it all the time except when it is important to have Traffic Information. Then I switch to Magic Earth.

I know that it is not easy to get Traffic Information for OM, but maybe you can deal something with the Guys from Magic Earth. Maybe they are willing to help in any Way?
Just an Idea. πŸ˜‰

Organic Maps

This one came up yesterday, while preparing for @organicmaps GSoC student work.

When developing an editor, you need to work with OSM Sandbox, a dev copy of API with no data. Sometimes it's frustrating because complex data is where an editor breaks. Usually I downloaded an OSM extract in JOSM, fixed ids, and uploaded it to the Sandbox, but on the 100th time I gave up.

This script helps you transfer a bbox worth of data in two commands, one of which is pip install.

@zverik Does the script also change IDs? What does "fix ids" mean? For readers' info, Organic Maps Editor doesn't store IDs and doesn't rely on them.

Okay I skipped three days, so here are three tweets on a big thing I did at Maps.Me. It's on the deep end of the iceberg.

In short, I was tasked with bringing subway networks to the app. Which was based on OSM data, so naturally I thought how to fix the data model: every city had its own tagging schema.

To monitor the process, I wrote the validator, which now powers @organicmaps :

cdn.organicmaps.app/subway/ind

Alexey later improved it, a lot. Now there are over 300 cities, all uniformly mapped!

One of our users has generated a song about Organic Maps. How does it sound to you? πŸ˜€

Beneath the twinkling stars, I stroll hand in hand,
With Organic Maps, exploring enchanted lands.
From Eiffel's gentle glow to Iceland's black sand shore,
Every step a melody, every sight, pure amore.

@organicmaps damn didn't know that music generation tools already do lyrics and voice synthesis, this sounds uncomfortably mainstream

theBurn

@organicmaps sometimes the lyrics are a little hard to understand, but besides this the song is awesome

Organic Maps

Fun fact about @organicmaps? It can do public transport navigation with the Beijing Subway, that Google Maps can't.

The time are still very off compared to local mapping apps, but it does work and if you don't care much about having exact times for arrival, it is worth using.

Oh and if you need to buy tickets, just point people to the name of the subway station on the map, they'll manage :)

Organic Maps

@governa I do especially like @organicmaps as my backup mapping application, both for work and the side job. Both often involve going where there's little or no cell signal, so the ability to pre-download sections of map is HUGE. With the current limitations in my area, it can't always get the fastest route, but so far always gets me there. Plus, it motivates me to get back into to update the and stay active.

Organic Maps

Super glad I stumbled upon @organicmaps and gave it a try! Not only does it do exactly what I needed, but I found the UI to be much simpler than Google Maps. Plus, open source, no ads, offline usage *and* privacy friendly? You got a lifetime user in me y'all πŸ˜‚

Thanks to the team for building it! πŸ™Œ
