Cool OpenStreetMap data editing statistics comparing Organic Maps and Maps.Me: github.com/orgs/organicmaps/di

A line chart showing that Organic Maps have picked up traction in mid 2021, and by first quarter of 2024 it gas surpassed Maps.me as Organic Maps shows increase and Maps.me is constantly decreasing.

Jonathan Hartley

@organicmaps thank you for posting! Huge fan here.

Is it an artifact of data collection that maps.me seems to drop to near zero then zero in its final two data points? Or did it really do that for some reason I don't know about? Next time, it might be worth clarifying that on the graph itself, eg. Omitting that part of the line

InsertUser

@organicmaps it would be amazing if it got as popular as Maps.me was at it's peak.

Another reasons to tut at the Mercator Map projection - how a circle with a radius of 5,000km, centred on Paris, looks according the the Mercator projection

Organic Maps

I am surprised how well @organicmaps works in china. It really made a lot of things easier.

Today I had the opportunity to compare organic maps with Apples version. 😁
So many more details on organic maps!
Even the paths in our cemetery are marked. And more of our shops can be seen. And I could inform about a shop that has been closed some weeks ago.
Just great! 😃

@Foxle Organic Maps uses map data from the open OpenStreetMap.org project, also created by volunteers. You and anyone else can improve the map data by contributing to osm.org

@openstreetmap I love it that the applications are called "manifestoes".

can you also import tracks to view them in organic maps?

Lumikeiju

@organicmaps I'm so excited for this feature - track recording is the main "killer feature" that's kept me using OSMAnd+ over Organic Maps!

Interested in improving Organic Maps usability on mobile Linux? Maybe also on desktops (Linux, Windows, Mac)? Discuss it here: codema.in/d/pcMmEAyv/missing-t

It would be great to see a detailed comparison of the pros and cons of QT and GTK (or other alternatives) in the context of less work/more platforms being supported, considering that the current implementation is already done in QT (mostly for dev purposes), and there is an open issue with a black screen on Qt 6.7: github.com/organicmaps/organic

@organicmaps I dont think a GTK frontend for organic maps on Linux is needed. The existing QT front end just needs a little polish for mobile use.

Dylan 🦥

@organicmaps would love to see this on plasma-mobile.

@organicmaps - There are two things I miss about OM:

1. the ability to bookmark/favourite single places a level higher (at the top of the list of lists). I would like to always have a bookmark home at hand.

2. the option to permanently set my own default zoom when running navigation. Sometimes when standing at traffic lights I check what the onward route looks like and I ‘pinch’ the screen. The automatic zooom reverts to a zoom that doesn't suit me. The ideal would be to be able to set a default zoom for several speed ranges, e.g. up to 50, 51-90 and above 90 km/h.

And one more little detail - the option to turn on showing the compass rose if the map is not facing north.

Ten years ago I used OpenStreetMap data on my GPS to help me cycle across the US. It was much more reliable than Google Maps (which sometimes invented roads that didn't exist).

Today, I'm using OpenStreetMap data with @organicmaps to cycle in France.

Organic Maps

Made my first contribution to #openstreetmaps via @organicmaps. Now all my favorite restaurants of my home city are listed, nice.

Organic Maps

Did you know that a long tap switches the full-screen mode on/off, and a single (normal) tap allows you to select anything on the map, including roads?

@organicmaps +1 for team “it’s not obvious” and I had to restart the app multiple times until I read by chance why and how to get the controls back on screen.
I love OM but this is really a design failure from my point of view.

Jens W. Klein

@organicmaps
Oh, thanks, probably that is why I sometimes magically got full-screen mode.

Organic Maps

Inspired by Google's move to remove @organicmaps from the Playstore without warning, I finally decided to move my > 3,000 Google Maps saved places to Organic Maps. To facilitate doing this for others' benefit, I made a quick webpage to convert your Google Maps GeoJSON data to GPX and KMZ files that render well in Organic Maps.

@rudo @organicmaps It would only be fair if DNS providers unlist google for a bit

Khalid

@rudo @organicmaps What?! When did google make this move?! I have been an Organic Maps user for the past year

joel b

@rudo @organicmaps wait what is google doing to organic maps? I have been recommending this to everyone in my motorcycle riding group but I don't use android.

Organic Maps

I'm loving making tiny contributions to #OpenStreetMaps through the editing capabilities of #OrganicMaps.
A restaurant here, a gas station there...

@organicmaps @openstreetmap

Drew (spooky)

@gerg I didn't know you could edit on organic maps :blobfox0_0:

Soso

@gerg it feels great!

Some great apps if you wan to do even more:

@streetcomplete to gamify the process of updating this micro (data very accessible to new users)
@everydoor to become a powerhouse and map every point of interest around you (not very accessible to new users, but extremely efficient)

Organic Maps

State of the Map 2024 is over, so it's time to start planning SotM 2025... which will be in Manila, Philippines! 🎉

🗺️ One more day at the bungalow, then we move to our place in the city. We’ll still come often, as these are some of the coolest beaches around, and there’s food!

Organic Maps

Talking about OSM, I wanted to thank both @openstreetmap and @organicmaps because I use them very extensively both for planning and navigation for every single one of my crazy #hiking trips. This is where I went thanks to you 💚

Want a more polished version of Organic Maps running on a Linux phone or desktop? Vote and share your opinion here: codema.in/d/phU1JlaV/pick-and-

anton_mls

@organicmaps Yes, I would love to. But all I get is a PR_END_OF_FILE_ERROR ... (edit: seems to work now. Great!)

Johannes Brakensiek

@organicmaps @linmob Can‘t vote, but a GTK UI for Organic Maps would be highly appreciated from my side.

Chronoshift

@organicmaps
I can’t vote in this, but want Organic Maps to be available on Linux phones that run Ubuntu Touch and PostmarketOS. If I knew how to vote I would.

Organic Maps

@simon @organicmaps @fdroidorg I could write my own modified peertube which injects media with exploits. My peertube server running free software doesn't help the user. This is why tagging with an anti-feature because "the data comes from youtube" is not helpful and just displays prejudice against apps developed for people who want to watch videos hosted on youtube. Whether youtube can be self-hosted with FOSS is irrelevant. The user is just accessing the data, not producing or serving it.
