I could add analytics on my Android app #osm2gmaps, with my own #Matomo server that I already have, but I don't want to.

But I just would like to know how many persons downloaded it, but I can't with #FDroid 😭

-/mondstern

@retiolus It didn't work in 2010 (since then fdroid has been around), it doesn't work now and it won't work in the future.

@retiolus The privacy users can count on. You're welcome! ;)

The results are in, after seeing about 800 boosts on the post to see how the Mastodon embed actually affects our server load. Here's what happened....basically nothing for us.

Image shows our server load slightly ramp up after the post on Mastodon that relied on the embed, but against other normal traffic is all looks pretty usual.

@gamingonlinux it's kinda funny that instead of hiring someone to submit a patch for their issue, #itsfoss decided to publish the article about their technical problems

The article reads superficial, like vague request for commercial proposal but for free lol

> #Mastodon instance admins, please fix our computer, or else we'll stop reposting to your social network

Folks, this is not journalism...

Grampa

@gamingonlinux There’s a lot missing here. How many CPU cores? Is this normalized load? What was the latency? Were there timeouts? Why are you looking at ~10 minute intervals when the reported problem is with spikes of ~1 minute? Very “works on my machine” type post

If you are updating from v0.4.3 you will need to clear app storage in Android Settings for History to work

@retiolus I still have some languages to contribute. I can already translate into 75 languages

Hi friends,

The alt-text.org alt text library project needs a new leader, I have brain cancer.

I built a working, scalable, proof of concept library of shared alt text with fuzzy matching.

I'd like to connect with the #accessibility dev community. I want to hand the project off to a team or a leader if anyone is willing to take it over.

Github: github.com/alt-text-org
WIP MVP: a site designed for writing alt text with a private library: my.alt-text.org

Boosts appreciated

For an end-of-year project when I was 16 I explained what a camera obscura is, showed that you can take photos with a shoebox, developed the negative and then obtained the positive digitally.

I just wanted to share that here.

The first photo is of my brother on the rocks in front of the sea.

The second is of the Costa Brava (Mediterranean) coastline in Spain.

The third photo is in the same place as the second, the subjects are my mother, my father and my brother.

(I haven't found a photo of the shoebox in question, I'm looking for it and will post it when I find it.)

Imagine quand même la CNIL foutre 90k€ d’amende à chaque DPO qui ne respecte pas les demandes d’accès article 15.
Non mais imagine quand même.

#Russia has launched "Ruviki," a state-backed encyclopedia mirroring the original Russian Wikipedia. This new platform includes all previous Russian-language Wikipedia content but has been edited to omit information potentially unfavorable to the Russian government.

Interestingly, the Ruviki article about George Orwell’s 1984 entirely omits the Ministry of Truth.

@wildebees The Russian Government has its very own Ministry of Truth, which deals in lies, & follows the principle of Dr Joseph Goebbels: "A lie, repeated often enough, becomes the truth."

ShredderFeeder

@wildebees we need to go after Russia's cables with a sawzall and just end their connection to the rest of the world. They're not trustworthy.

:neocat_scream: kitty!

@wildebees Russian Wikipedia editors nicknamed it Bug-o-Pedia.

Yes, every notable Wikipedia clone (a.k.a. "encyclong", from encyclopedia+viking) has its own nickname.

I've been using, and paying for a #Tutanota email for over 3 years now. And I think I'm going to give it up.

After 3 years, it's still not possible to use OpenPGP, I have to use a dodgy system and give a password to everyone I want to email who doesn't use Tutanota.

Searching for emails is a pain, a real pain.

It is not possible to use any client other than Tutanota.

I came from #ProtonMail, and changed because their commercial com. became too aggressive for my taste. I may reconsider...

retiolus

But what I really like from Tutanota is my 1EUR/month subscription. I don't want to pay 5EUR/month for a personal email...

leighelse{}

@retiolus For twenty years I've had my domains on a cheap shared hosting account, and used multiple email accounts without issue. I'm currently paying NZD150 (about €100) a year, which covers websites and utility software as well as email.

I use Thunderbird on my laptop and whatever works best on my mobile devices. I archive mail to our NAS, and can search 25 years of email there without issue.

There will be reasons a setup like this won't work for you, but I don't think it's a bad option.

Ander

It’s just been pointed out to me that the reason Apple runs a trade-in programme for older devices is so they can reduce the size of the used market, and has fuck all to do with recycling.

That’s blown my tiny mind.

Now I understand Sony's motivation to offer trade ins on PS4.

Aman

@DJDarren fuck man. ive been looking for an ipod nano for 3 years. y do they not make the shit we like, and then force us to make more electronic waste??

HipsterDM

@DJDarren
Ouch, wait till you find out most recycling is bullshit.

@SarraceniaWilds

I feel like someone could make bank with a Kickstarter whose pitch is, "It's a 55-inch 4K 120Hz screen with 4 HDMI-In's and the most barebones firmware possible. Oh, you want Netflix? Go buy a used PS4. They're, what, $100 these days?"

derHinek

@SarraceniaWilds I agree that smart TVs are a shit show, but saying that TVs are only screens is incorrect. What made them TVs is that they have a tuner to receive what they display, hence the name television (also speakers might be good). One could argue, that today a capability to receive a stream via the internet is just the modern way of a receiver.

Aaron Longchamps

@SarraceniaWilds agreed! I don't connect my TV to the network and stream everything on an Apple TV.

I just searched for something on #DuckDuckGo and got a “DuckAssist” at the top of the results, right below the ads (of course).

It was basically a ChatGPT like message as if I’d typed the question there.
