@internetarchive I love having this resource, but it desperately needs a search feature. Especially if you are going to call it an index.

@internetarchive If it helps pay the bills I'm all for it. Being paranoid and scared of AI isn't something we should strive for. Using public domain data to train AIs is a slam dunk. Why complain about AI companies stealing data and be against public domain data at the same time? That's insanity.

In fact using the vast amounts of public domain literature should be very helpful to LLMs as long as we use them for their original function (generative general text and not as search engines or answering questions). Hopefully the training data will be processed transparently so others can use it as well instead of making the training data absolutely proprietary and locked down.

“When people want to listen to music they go to Spotify. When people want to study sound recordings as they were originally created, they go to libraries like the Internet Archive. Both are needed. There shouldn’t be conflict here.” - @brewsterkahle

@internetarchive @brewsterkahle I've used the archive for academic assignments. I concur that this is its purpose.

@internetarchive @brewsterkahle Some people, when they want to listen to music, listen to their own music collection accumulated over decades, and don't go near streaming services. Spotify doesn't rule the world.

That said, I don't get why, other than they're just greedy jerks, UMG and Sony are bringing this case.

It is an invaluable resource for #DIY musicians. I have archived lots over there. An old group I was in from #NM has been heard by 10s of thousands more people than it would have been, for instance- ¡para!helion is now known around the globe

@internetarchive uh, is this GoPro doing an end-to-end trip through a bear? I'm pretty sure I don't want to see that.

@internetarchive Is this from when you decided to become the pirate bay for currently published works by living authors?

It may determine the future of all libraries, but not in the way you're implying. Just thinking about the people who were sad the manga series they read from pirate websites were discontinued.

Yves L. Jardin-Noam

@internetarchive for donations to fight the suit, should we make general donations or is there a specific url/fund to support?

internetarchive

As most of you know, our library is being sued by 4 corporate publishers who want to stop the Internet Archive from lending books. The date for oral argument has just been set for March 20.

@internetarchive @team >It is just as important to preserve digital books as paper books, given especially the rising popularity of digital books and the fact that many local and diverse voices are not published in print. We want a future where libraries are free to preserve digital book files and ensure they remain accessible to the public as well unaltered.

Wow, I agree with this sentiment. I wonder who said this...

>Internet Archive

@Sui I think you and your group know more about this, but doesn't Internet Archive routinely work to scrub the internet of certain content it doesn't like?

@internetarchive @team I have to ask, when you started making the books in question available for lending, did you follow the proper library procedures, whatever they happen to be?

Michael Winiberg

@internetarchive @team

I agree entirely with the aims of the Internet Archive and libraries in general.

Having read this statement, I do wonder if the focus on the "greedy maw of Big Publishing" might not be counter-productive in a society (seen from the UK anyway) which seems to prioritise money/wealth over just about everything else.

I'm only an outsider looking in, but having had retrospective restrictions placed on my ebooks (I still have a number I've bought and can no longer (...)
