Federation of Foundations for Small Projects πŸ’‘

A multinational network of nonprofits and co-ops that provide a legal home for projects, pairing a flexible but standardized set of governance with a flexible but standardized set of services.

Could be a project's forever home, or 'just' a way point between, say, Open Collective and landing at a mature and more specific Foundation.

If I didn't need a ~salaried job, this is what I'd be trying to build right now.

Nonprofits and co-ops because I think having investors who expect an ROI in the mix is a nonstarter.

Federated because single points of failure and monocultures are dead ends.

Standardized (but flexible) because that can make governance coherent, legible, and trustworthy for downstream users, while also simplifying offerings for project leaders and maintainers who are trying to find a home that fits their project's needs.

@josh Well, one way to do that while still doing the job would be to do it with others.

@josh Are you aware of commonsconservancy.org/ ?

Michiel Leenars and the team at Commons Conservancy have built a model that could easily be extended worldwide. All of the legal documents are themselves Open and reusable.

Today, the Klamath River is flowing freely for the first time in more than 100 years.

The dams have been removed. The ecosystems are being nurtured. And sovereignty has been restored to the Shasta Indian Nation over another 2800 acres. Good things are happening. Great things are possible. lostcoastoutpost.com/2024/aug/

Happy #Caturday, my friends! 😻

Can you join me and Pico-cat in celebrating #Pride month by helping our friend Ravyn get gender affirming care?

We're more than $2500 toward our goal of $17K! Give the gift of gender euphoria: gofund.me/ae759faf

Hoo boy. I'm not naming names because I don't want to fan the flames, but the knives are out:

Events around #xz have rightly emboldened volunteer-driven open source projects to take their hyper-wealthy downstream users to task.

Wild to think that many large companies have hollowed out their open source program offices (OSPOs), the internal teams who have been working on addressing these resource issues.

I fear this will get worse before it gets better.

Stop treating open source projects and foundations like consumer-facing businesses.

Unless you've got a paid support contract that's being neglected, or there's a grave concern, it's inappropriate to escalate issues to massively public forums.

Maintainers and the staffers and volunteers at foundations are already overworked.

Don't make it harder for them to address your issue by ALSO making them waste time firefighting in public.

@josh Oh, dear...

People have always "escalated" to public forums, for any kind of software, because that's where they're most likely to get help!

It is also one way that projects acquire exposure and mind share.

Finally, painting all open source software as the same kind of volunteerist, non-profit driven and resource-strapped project plays into the hands of corporations that use open source as a fig leaf. These calls for appropriate behavior could, themselves, use a lot more nuance in that regard (and more regard for consumer expectations when consumers are the target audience).

"firefighting in public" – In all likelihood, its not going to be a fire in the first place unless the product is highly valued / popular. Chill with your issue tracker... it will be OK.

@josh Some BDFLs in the open source community should be aware of this as well.

@josh Or just keep treating them that way, because your money is at stake here. It won't have a negative impact for you. 😞

All the teachers' strikes, the healthcare workers, the baristas, now screenwriters and actors, while drivers are bargaining with UPS under threat of strike, and unions emerge at my local bookstore, among local journalists, and now animators: gizmodo.com/cartoon-network-wa

Let's keep this rolling!

Labor is the strongest check we've got against the capital class, and can help us shift power dynamics toward outcomes on climate, healthcare, housing, and more.

@josh This is heartening to see. Now, we just need all of the big tech workers to unionize and go on strike. I would love nothing more than to see the entirety of the system shutdown, even at the expense of my access to it.

@josh @BlackAzizAnansi RAIL STRIKE! RAIL STRIKE! I hope we can properly fuck the rail corpos

Oh, uh, my SoundCloud can be found over at union.place – a well moderated home for all labor-minded people on Fedi!

You can follow my alt – @josh@union.place – for a more concentrated feed of pro-worker goodness.

Please take a moment to drink in the :sparkles_pink: absolute spectacle :sparkles_indigo: that is the Brands.town instance: brands.town/explore

To all the lovely humans starting Mastodon instances:

Please think about succession planning, resourcing, and rules of engagement (aka Code of Conduct) as a matter of priority for your instance.

When you create a community resource, you're making a commitment. If you're new to stewarding a community, ask for help. #AskACommunityManager

It'd be really sad if in 3, 6, 12 months we start losing a ton of instances and Fediverse community members with them.

@josh Where is the default Code of Conduct? I changed a few settings on my server and I guess it decided "Hey, you're not standard any more" so it doesn't show one any more.

@josh I think this will be the biggest ongoing challenge to a Twitter replacement. Not everyone is cut out to moderate or manage a community and the sparkly newness of it will wear off pretty quick, I'm guessing.

@josh an excellent resource for #MastodonAdmins and uhh i guess #admins generally is runyourown.social/ written by @darius

Being an admin for a community is hard work, not to be taken lightly.
