Did you know pixelfed.social runs on a single vps (8vcpu, 16G ram)?

We're only using about 33% of the resources at 7500~ MAU!

More performance improvements are coming that will make @pixelfed scale more efficiently too 🚀

My goals for this weekend:

⚡ Fixed Import from IG
⚡ Stories + Pixelfed app
⚡ Improved app admin
⚡ New fediverse.info
⚡ Launch Beagle Beta

Welp, ended up spending Friday night/Sat morning working on #fediDB

I may have to delay the new fediverse.info and beagle beta launch 😅

@dansup Thanks a lot for fixing my IG import situation. All 400+ imported perfectly and working well, without any deletion nor re-importation being necessary.

Wow, the #threadiverse growth is still going strong!

Lemmy should overtake @pixelfed in terms of total users over the next 24 hours! Great job reddit 🚀

@dansup @pixelfed

Im not complaining but can we all not migrate to the top 2-3 instances?

Paul Rohr

@dansup @pixelfed The startling thing for me is how much attention the upstart Kbin has gotten, compared to the more established Lemmy. Total user counts can get distorted by longevity, but MAUs tell a different story about what's been happening this month:

35,530 Kbin
26,803 Lemmy
14,182 Pixelfed

Obviously, the usual patterns of scalloped growth mean that the current surge will ebb, but ...

pixelfed.social has seen larger than average growth the past 4 days too!

@dansup good work on the platform. It’s great, even if i’m just lurking on there!

DELETED

@dansup If Redditors move, the whole internet follows. 🤔

I had to add two new levels of caching to fediDB in order to improve real-time/ttl stats/graphs.

It's somewhat of a tricky problem to cache graph data while also trying to display the most up-to-date data.

There is a lot of data that fediDB has collected over the years, and as it grows, it becomes more "expensive" to organize.

I should write a blog post about this, I love solving problems like these, I usually end up learning something new!

dansup

That being said, one of the cache levels is database driven, and i haven't tested it enough, it ironically may cache stale data so I'll look into that tomorrow lol

It's almost 9am and I work in a couple hours, so please bear with me

dansup

Lot's of improvements to fedidb.org, including self-submission, more real-time stats, and a special page for our reddit friends!

@dansup I've been trying to find an API that returns a list of known servers in the fediverse. Does FediDB serve this purpose?

@dansup

Great start on measuring the ActivityPub ecosystem. Thanks for sharing the link.

Is there any way to measure funded percentage or some quantitative measure of even non-labor cost coverage? I see +2,249 servers in the last month. I read @jeff comment this morning "* typically less than 2% of users financially support the social server they use."

How would one quantify sustainable funding? I provide $10.35 monthly funding to my "home" server. I justify this to myself as I pay ~$10/mo each to various news outlets and magazines. Just joined a kbin instance. Is it sustainable for an individual to fund just one instance? If someone purchases, hosts, maintains an instance, does that "buy" them sufficient to not be deemed "free-loaders"?

Is there any analysis out there on the economics of building/maintaining #ActivityPub based social ecosystems?

Wanting to draw analogies with microbial ecosystems and analyses around the effect of "free-loader" species on ecosystems. Any leads on social ecosystems?

@dansup hats of to you, Daniel! You do a lot of hard work for the Fediverse and it’s all top quality. Thank you!

dansup

Sorry if I don’t respond to your comments, I get a lot of notifications and I’m trying to ship a big update to fedidb before I hit the hay

@dansup Aviate, navigate, communicate - what goes for aviation goes for software releases I guess!

dansup

I deleted my previous post about Meta/IG, because I don't want to cause unnecessary drama or jump to conclusions.

I'm looking forward to them joining the fediverse, and hope it all works out!

@dansup I am certainly not looking forward to it, and sincerely doubt it will work out for anyone other than Meta’s shareholders.

@dansup im looking forward to putting my hand into alligator's mouth, and hope it all works out!

@dansup Don't fall for the "embrace"-part, you know what comes after

I gotta admit, the Autospam detection in @pixelfed is much better since I added the AI algorithm!

Feels good knowing we have the best spam mitigation across the #fediverse

Look forward to sharing how we did this, and our future plans, in an upcoming pixelfed.blog post

@dansup @pixelfed Interesting point of fact, since properly training SpamAssassin's bayesian filters, 20 (wrote 15… then checked myself) years ago, I have never received any false-negative spam. Could a heuristic system like SA's not be repurposed? (Unless you count Bayesian statistical analysis as AI, of course.)

I'll be sure to watch for the post!

@dansup @pixelfed Heklo! Any posts showing how to use Pixelfed? I downloaded SchildiChat. What are some basic & recommended next steps? Please & thank you!

Robert Boler

@dansup @pixelfed That last line— That’s what sets you & the federated folks apart from business-as-usual. Feels like what the internet was made for. Keep slaying and sharing 🖖

dansup

Lot's of improvements coming to fedidb.org!

Some highlights:
⚡ Add your instance
⚡ Near real time stats/counts
⚡ New software API endpoint
⚡ Lemmy/Kbin growth tracker
⚡ Audit log

Shipping soon! 🚀

Edit: Shipped!!

@dansup It sure looks pretty!

Is there a way to make the vertical axis start at 0? Graphs that don't start at 0 when showing numbers aren't intuitive and trustworthy.

dansup

Working on some fedidb.org updates!

For those following the lemmy/kbin influx, I'll have something extra special 😉

dansup

Instagram blocked the #joinPixelfed hashtag not long ago, and Twitter too.

Don't forget that 😉

@dansup I'm sure if you accept a meeting with them under NDA, you can work this all out. /s

@dansup
Actually I just was able to see #joinpixelfed on Instagram. I added it to a picture of my dog. We'll see what happens.

Patariki

@dansup Is that not in conflict with any monopoly laws? Anywhere?

dansup

Any good iOS apps for Lemmy or Kbin?

Am I going to have to write my own? 😅

@dansup there is github.com/buresdv/Mlem and github.com/gkasdorf/memmy both of which are in TestFlight and still a bit rough around the edges but progressing nicely! :)

@dansup
There is an app currently being created by
@hariette specifically for Lemmy and Kbin, (Artemis) which looks really exciting.

Now using Nuxt for pixelfed webUI and Next for pixelfed.blog and beta-preview.pixelfed.io

I don't mind mind it tbh, Vue and React are nice tools!

McNeely

@dansup what lead to the change and what were you using before?

rexum

@dansup but which is (a bit) better, vue or react?

dansup

Pixelfed + Nuxt + Tailwind

The future of the Pixelfed web UI is looking bright ✨

YSK: You can see who viewed your Story, even if it's a remote account!

Victor von Void

@dansup the question is, why do I need to know who viewed my story?
AFAIK I also don't know who viewed my other posts, and I'm additionally not really fond of having to confirm that X will see that I viewed their story each time for each story.
IMHO stories should be handled the same way as posts.

dansup

Wow, that's a lot of imported posts

Floppy 💾

@dansup Nice! Is that from people that started using the new import feature?

Congrats btw on finishing! I think that's a big milestone, maybe from a technical POV, for sure in terms of promoting Pixelfed. 💪

Shadow, First of His Name

@dansup Will MEDIA_EXIF_DATABASE be put to use as walkaround for folks who closed their account before the IG feature for JSON in 2018? I have a useless backup from 2012.

Jøta Seth

@dansup
First of all thank you for the import tool and congratulations for the work.

On the other hand, perhaps it has already been mentioned, but while importing and having checked that all the photos were in the IG backup, I realized that after a certain point Pixelfed's import tool did not recognize the latest publications.

Then I found the problem:

The backup of those unrecognized posts is no longer done by IG in jpg but in webp.

Matt Stenson

@dansup can you view them on the web or only in app currently?

Gary Parker

@dansup all I can see is a picture of a dog from 2 weeks ago. Am I missing something? Why not boost it from your mastodon.social account?

Amandine B (She/Her)

@dansup I just saw it! That's nice. I also added one just for fun. I didn't find where to add text to my story though. How did you added the music to your story?
