Never thought I'd be excited for new furnace filters or replacing incandescent bulbs with LED to cut down the power bill

But here my old ass is, waiting for my partner to get home so I can show him some new under cabinet LEDs, even sent him this teaser πŸ˜‚ (dont mind the mess lol)

@dansup I've put a lot of our devices on Smart plugs, not so much so I can have my phone turn them on or off, but mainly so I can monitor how much power everything is using. Got me to turn off my TV setup a lot more when we aren't using it!

Travis J. Smith

@dansup I did the same thing over at our place as well, makes a huge difference when waltzing out into the kitchen for something later in the evening or early in the morning even.

HACK13

@dansup yeah I switched to LED bulbs with zigbee a few years back and cut my bill a lot and the reason for the smarts is my partner never turned off the lights so it was easier to just program them turning themselves off when not home or during the day when the sun is out.

It’s super cool to get email notifications for @pixelfed spam detections and be able to handle them on our app, most times in less than a few minutes

I can go anywhere with 5G coverage and easily manage and moderate my instances!

More mod tools are coming to the app btw 😎

While I was able to ship Stories to the @pixelfed mobile app, I unfortunately didn't have enough time to release Groups

"Put up or shut up" is a phrase that comes to mind

I won't post from this account until Groups are shipped, enough is enough. Shame! #groups

@dansup @pixelfed Just tested stories but it looks like you can’t select an existing photo from your device yet. (Hoping that feature is coming!) πŸ˜ƒ

@dansup @pixelfed Better late than safe. you are doing good work. congratulations.

Announcing Drunk mode

Imagine having an Instagram breathalyzer to prevent those bad posts

Using your VoiceID, the @pixelfed camera detects if you're drunk and pretends to upload the post when it really saves it to a non-public url that is shown to you the next day with a happy warning and a dozen simulated bad side effect induced horror stories it could have caused (using ChatGPT ofc)

Just imagine how many jobs and relationships this could save πŸ€”

Too bad it didn't exist to prevent this post

@dansup well… i was just wondering if you’d been drinking, so maybe jusy a teeny bit overdone?

With love!

Sarcassem

@dansup listen, you do you. You’re not going to make everyone happy all the time. Besides, isn’t that what the mute button is for?

dansup

I've grown so much w/ @pixelfed that I no longer take criticism personally, and often times will reach out to them to ask for feedback

We're all human, nobodys perfect and I've made plenty of mistakes

I've even apologized to my most vocal critics here because I understand now what I did was wrong, and can publicly admit that

I'm brutally honest because respect is all I have and desire, and I'll never jeopardize that!

Y'all control that, it's my job to keep being me and slaying for #teamFedi

Stefan Ritter :verified:

@dansup @pixelfed Just tell them they are right. They usually don't know the answer to that.

here’s some art as a morale booster for all your effort πŸ‘

@dansup @pixelfed I’ve been meaning to write up a short review of the Pixelfed app, but don’t want to sound critical (because it’s a good thing to have!) but maybe I’ll write up my thoughts.

The fediverse needs to reflect and take a page from indigenous culture in regards to elders and the knowledge they pass down

With fediblock, and intra-project drama erupting so frequently, it's as if we're a bunch of immature kids who need an adult to step in and remind us of respect, compassion, and most of all, community

I get that we can't always find common ground, and that's okay, but we should be more considerate to each other and try to find amicable solutions together, less ego more ❀️

Alex@rtnVFRmedia Suffolk UK

@dansup in Asian culture you have "aunties" and "uncles" (basically anyone older than you are) who try to pass on good advice and practices to the community...

dansup

Some people are chronically mad, like have you considered just being nicer, you know, that thing you expect of everyone else?

I don't care if anyone likes me, I care if they respect me.

Being brutally honest and speaking my mind is something I won't change

Take it or leave it, I have a big heart and believe in humanity but I won't stand around and let someone be harassed, and I'll stand up for those who say bad things about me because I'm mature enough to separate my ego from my emotions

❀️

It sucks being a night owl in western canada because all the conferences and meetings happen so early in the morning

Π“Ρ€ΠΈΠ³ΠΎΡ€ΠΈΠΉ Клюшников

haha night owl, I don't even know who I am at this point, I don't have any sync with the light day whatsoever, I go to bed and wake up whenever, it always drifts

I can see @pixelfed adding federation support for Blue Sky

While we are dedicated to ActivityPub federation, that doesn't mean we can't also support other protocols

Anyways, looking forward to exploring BlueSky more!

Edan Osborne πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦πŸ‡΅πŸ‡Έ

@dansup @pixelfed Diaspora, OStatus, and ActivityPump should also be considered.

This would mean that federating with GNU Social, Pump.io, and diaspora* would work.

Sean C.

@dansup @pixelfed @reiver i’ll believe BlueSky has a viable protocol (and is serious about having federation) once the actually do it β€” same re Threads

dansup

I finally got invited to Blue Sky!

Don't worry though, I'm all in on #ActivityPub

Thanks to @gabrielrmunoz for the invite 😎

Danie van der Merwe

@dansup now you can set your Pixelfed URL as your self-verified username there!

Winter please, so tired of this wildfire smoke

I feel like I'm living in the prequel to Extrapolations, and every time we're hanging out or partying, I always bring up that show because nobody watched it and it's like a damn time machine into the future

@dansup I thought it was a great show but hard to watch and then look out the window. More people should see it

Moto :rainbowinfinity:

@dansup Thank you for the recommendation! Just watched the first episode and … yeah. It’s *riveting.*

JΓ©rΓ©mie Ducastel

@dansup looks awesome and never heard of it, thanks for the discovery !

PixelFam, fedilebrities

Am I on a roll tonight??

What fedi terms will I come up with next??

Sorry not sorry to whomstever claims to have invented "fedilebrity", i'm claiming that 😎

dansup

ngl though, marketing and design are what I'm best at

In an era of hipster frameworks and languages, I was able to put lipstick on the proverbial php pig and move the discussion away from "pixelfed is php, eww" to "omg when is mastodon going to do this"

it's all about the vibes πŸ’…

François Best

@dansup not sure about fedilebrity, I half-dyslexically read that as febrility.

dansup

One of the most followed accounts in the fediverse is dedicated to sharing advice and tips about fedi projects

Kudos to @FediThing for staying true to their mission and not taking advantage of their huge following for monetary gain

Wouldn't doubt they get paid offers to boost or mention posts, yet they have demonstrated time and time again that they use their following to highlight accounts of all sizes and demographics

We're lucky to have fedilebrities like them who use their power for good

FediThing

@dansup

This is really kind 😊

But I think if I started doing promotional stuff people would unfollow me pretty quickly!

I think most of my follows are from people who want simple useful info that isn't wrapped in promotional stuff or padding, so I'll try to keep them happy.

obi0bi

@dansup @FediThing omg, this is something I need since I'm still figuring out the fediverse, ty so much!

dansup

Considered limiting app features/APIs to an "official api" to give my @pixelfed app an edge

But then I saw @vernissage and it made me realize that temptation to lock down features to my own app would only make @pixelfed worse

I'm an okay designer, but that app is gorgeous

I realized that my ego isn't worth the gems and amazing experiences that others can build, so why bother limiting the APIs?

Now I'm working with @PixelDroid on cross app settings sync, no amount of $ could buy this feel 😁

dansup

@pixelfed @vernissage @PixelDroid Another really good feeling is ignoring VC emails

The last thing I'd do is sell out, I'd rather beg for donations than see all this work be for nothing.

Philippe Jadin

@dansup thank you for that, I was going to ask how spam detection is implemented in pixelfed πŸ™‚

dansup

I’ve been using Sublime Text for almost a decade now and love it, but I started using vscode for pixelfed app development

I like the IDE and better autocomplete that vscode offers, but I can’t fathom switching php dev to it because I’m so stuck on Sublime and feel some form of attachment to it

It’s weird, I know, it’s probably cuz I’m getting older and stuck in my ways lol

@dansup I feel you there, though I switched to VSCode a while back. At least with many languages prioritizing language server support, we’re in a pretty great spot with editors :D

AlternativeTo

@dansup And if you don't like Microsoft, you can also use VS Codium. πŸ˜‰

Andrew

@dansup I'm the same, vscode for big projects and sublime for smaller stuff. It's faster and less mental load, so if I don't need all the vscode extras

dansup

So @pixelfed has quite a robust set of spam and moderation tools, and one challenge I faced when planning the Roles feature years ago was to log all moderation actions so admins could see who took action, and other details.

It's been quietly logging all moderation actions for years now, and will be super useful for Groups as they can have multiple levels of moderation.

For Groups to really work, a proper dispute process is req'd, with full history across group admins and server admins

dansup

Pixelfed Stories are not a new feature, the web UI has supported them for 2 years along with comments, reactions, view counts and most importantly, federation support.

What's new about Stories is they are now available on our mobile apps!

P.S - I added Poll support too at the same time, they are just hidden and waiting for the right moment πŸ˜‰

github.com/pixelfed/pixelfed/p

[DATA EXPUNGED]
dansup

For those wondering what @pixelfed Stories are, they are an ephemeral stream of photos and videos that are deleted after 24 hours and can only be viewed on @pixelfed, they are not regular posts, and you’ll never see them on timelines!

Stories are meant to share those moments that may not warrant their own post, and allow your followers the opportunity to follow along in a more direct and intimate way

@dansup The UI of Pixelfed concerns me. I feel it's too similar to Instagram. How long before Meta takes notice and decides to strike it down for copyright infringement? Or is it even a possibility? Are UI elements copyrightable?

@pixelfed

Franz

@dansup @pixelfed maybe the app could spend the full device width for posts? That would be great πŸ€—

Petri Tilli

@dansup @pixelfed You are an inspiration! Keep up the great work! πŸ’ͺ
