Today marks four years of #Owncast! Can you believe it? For fun, let's take a short look back at what that looked like. https://gabekangas.com/blog/2024/05/today-marks-four-years-of-owncast/ Did you see, thanks to @mxks, that there's a new way to browse the Owncast directory, and watch those live streams on Roku devices? It replaces the old, previously removed application. https://channelstore.roku.com/es-us/details/2179326b6b85869a1a3a18d48ca76de6/owncasts You can learn more about it in this month's Owncast community newsletter. I always love reading it, and learning something new. Are you familiar with @radiofreefedi, the fantastic community radio for the Fediverse? All the awesome music and audio content created by those across the Fediverse is now simulcasted in video as another way to enjoy it. Little known fact: Before Owncast had a web-based admin, a terminal-based dashboard was built, but never shipped.

Owncast is what it is because of all the amazing contributors from all over the world. I'm immensely thankful to each one of them. Take a moment to see all the contributions from all the fantastic developers since the first day of the project. If you've ever wanted to contribute to an open source project, but thought "I'm not technical" or "I don't program" but have experience with design Owncast would love to have you involved! We're planning for future features and would love to have a designer involved early. People say "Owncast needs polish", so maybe you can help make a real difference! Read more: https://owncast.online/designer-wanted/ @owncast I am not a designer, but I can provide feedback/suggestions, if that would be helpful? All in all, I don't think it looks bad. @owncast hello everyone would you like to invest or know more about my investment please Write me registration is free and payment is done after 12hours of investment.... Today is the three year anniversary of Owncast's first commit. I hoped a new release would be ready by "First Commit Day", but a little more time is needed. Thank you for your patience and support, here's to another three years!

@owncast@fosstodon.org That's understandable. This update is going to be huge 😉 Had a great time demoing #Owncast and learning about people's passions at Day 1 of #FediForum. If anybody has any questions after the demo, please say hi! Looking forward to Day 2 of @fediforum! A favor to ask! If you know of any #Fediverse related events (conferences, networking, demo opportunities) that would be a good fit please reach out and let us know. Even if you think we already know about them, it's likely we don't! Going forward I want Owncast to be a larger part of the greater community, but I've been very disconnected from it, so I could use your help. Thank you!

I don't know of any, but do you know the Friendica group (at)FediverseNews? they seem a lively lot & if I had to do a 6 degrees, that's where I'd try. With all the new people, it's time to say hello and mention how #Owncast is looking for people to contribute to the project! It's an exciting time as some really cool work is going on, and the project is growing along with the rest of the #Fediverse. If you find this free and open #livestream project interesting and want to be involved, there's never been a better time. Say hello and find out what part you can play in a project that people think is pretty cool.

Owncast could really use some design help. Participate in #Hacktoberfest by offering up your design skills just for a few weeks with no long term expectations. We're primarily running into UI, layout and mobile design roadblocks and would love if somebody could help us work through some of these. Have a designer friend who isn't on the Fediverse and might be able to help? Please share with them! Reach out here or to @gabek If you've been thinking about trying out #Owncast for the first time, October is a great time to do so! If you spin up a public Owncast instance during #Hacktoberfest you get an Owncast t-shirt! Read more about how you can be involved this month with Owncast, even if you're not developer. https://owncast.online/hacktoberfest @owncast It's been fantastic meeting new people and engaging with those looking to make small, but mighty contributions to #Owncast during the first few days of #Hacktoberfest. I'd love if you could join us! This year it's not just about code contributions, either. Creative work, design feedback, tutorials, videos, etc are all fantastic ways to help the project. And you get an Owncast t-shirt if you contribute! Trying something new. The first (and maybe last?) "Owncast Update"! Learn what the project has been up to and discover the upcoming initiatives. As a bonus: some personal thoughts about the project! @owncast Thanks for the update. I've only heard bits and pieces about owncast from others on the fediverse in 500 characters or fewer. The video format was much easier to follow. I currently has an Open Streaming Platform server, but now I'm considering swapping it out for owncast. I see there's already an example .service file. I'll likely use that as a starting point & will offer to contribute back any setup/automation that I do. Automation is my jam 🙂 Owncast will soon be joining the Fediverse! We had a little discussion about what went into, and what you can expect from Owncast's first step into federation. |
@owncast this was a great read! Know that we really appreciate what you've made, especially in the face of constant "Why haven't you done this?" or "Why doesn't it do this?" I really wish I knew web dev better, but I am learning more and more about app development, so who knows maybe in the future I can help with a native mobile app :) keep that passion going, and again, thank you!
@owncast Thank you for all your hard work on this project. It's a great addition to my self hosted services!
