Let 1000 funding models bloom the the Fediverse. Here is one, via @timbray:

"CoSocial is yet another #fediverse outpost...What’s different is that it’s Canadian, and a member-owned co-operative. Both of those matter to me, but the co-op part is the real story.

... $50/year and you’re a member/owner, with an account at cosocial.ca. There’ll never be ads. Nobody will ever get rich. A few people might make a living, down the road. You will never be the product."

@tchambers @timbray

Are there any more details on the blog aspect to it? Does every account get the ability to pay longer posts at a related url with a shortened #fediverse post (500 characters including link to blog post)?

@tchambers @timbray

Some people would struggle with even $50 per year, so it will cause a degree of digital gentrification. Some people will be excluded because of economic class and not character or ability to contribute to discourse. That might be necessary but it's not ideal.

Thank you @tchambers
for promoting a coop. there is also social.coop. And the members know a lot about coops.

I am most interested in turning @UncensoredNews into a coop.

I met some wonderful people from there at the #fediconf.

@gunchleoc inspired me to pull all the #TwitterAlgorthim findings on what amps and best pushes content inside the Twitter world to better help with #Maystodon and other Twitter actions to evangelize the Fediverse there,.

Here it is, in a public Google doc form:

I've been collecting trolls and bots on a twitter list called Defenders. If y'all want to go and mass block people on that list, you're welcome to. The list includes well known US Nazis. @shoq

I also liked the post where a former twitter guy was saying that twitter runs on high profile celebrities. That's not what we're about here, so that's an easy distinction. They are passive engagement. We are active engagement.

Chris, @atomicpoet look at this:

"Among the unexpected sources of support for the magazine was the “fediverse” – the collection of decentralized Mastodon servers that soared in popularity following Elon Musk’s acquisition of Twitter. Many comments on the GoFundMe page mention that the donors learned about the Observer through #Mastodon – where the Texas Observer was one of the first journalistic outlets to set up its own server, Canup said."

@tchambers @atomicpoet If anyone still needs more proof that Mastodon has reached a self-sufficient critical mass, boy do I have a real life case study to show them.

I agree:

"The network effect is the only thing the closed social platforms have going for themselves....
by the time the #Fediverse has sufficient numbers of users, it’s game over for proprietary social networks...
Note that the critical 'sufficient number of users' can likely be substantially smaller than the user populations of those closed networks...because all value accrues to users...For many of my own use cases...the Fediverse has critical mass today already."

@tchambers

But this argument seems to miss the very importance of the network effect, so it comes across as both circular and Pollyannish.

The network effect drives growth and provides value. Heck yeah, that’s the thing the successful platforms have going for them, but to say Fediverse will match that value once it has lots of people misses that without first having that value it will have trouble attracting those lots of people.

It’s like saying the only thing dollars have over Bitcoin is that they’re accepted so broadly.

Well… yeah.

@tchambers

Agreed. I’m never going back to corporate, centralized social media. Honestly, I find it difficult to understand why anyone would at this point. It’s so clear now how much time is spent gaming/circumventing the algorithm. Such a waste of effort.

New research from my team on the #TwitterMigration:

This is our first quarterly update analyzing which platforms are growing - esp #mastodon & #postnews. Includes new data on users posting, app downloads & more.

Get it here: ▶️ is.gd/EI1lOl

Any help boosting and sharing out this new work is very appreciated!

@tchambers It's honestly cool that no one uses Diaspora for that. Or it's not considered as an alternative for that.

@tchambers This is great. Any thought about using something other then Google Docs for this? @cryptpad has a good solution that is much less privacy invasive...

@tchambers It would be helpful to post links with all of these for any pointers to how to write your own bots.

I'd agree with both of these items:

"If you're thinking of setting up a Masto server, please, please, do two things:

1. read up on what it was like to run a Usenet server. The dynamics are very similar in that you are responsible for policing your own users so that your server isn't blocked. Mastodon is Usenet with a REST API and a character limit.

2. (CW: dark, seriously dark) Read this recounting of what it was like to keep LiveJournal useable."

@tchambers for people who want to avoid "dark, seriously dark" LiveJournal early days, the author posted a followup thread about the bare minimum to look for in new sites. Lots to think about here: twitter.com/rahaeli/status/159 .

Note: we just did a #Fedibock of several instances:

➡️ mastodong[.]lol
➡️ activitypub-troll[.]cf
➡️ misskey-forkbomb[.]cf
➡️ repl[.]co

Several admins have seen these instances being involved in some nasty attacks: They use thousands of subdomains of activitypub-troll [.]cf to overwhelm instances with Mastodon server calls.

An odd Fediverse-specific type of denial of service attack.

All blocked. Will block more if they sprout up,

@tchambers Do you have, or plan to have, a whitelist or blacklist? Isn't there any peering protocol to avoid connecting to the federation to instances that misuse it?

This is amazing, now tell him to get WordPress comments and other features to integrate with activity pub as well and I can connect all my social media and inter-share.

That is the future of my dreams.

@tchambers It's going to be very interesting to see how instance admins who defederate from mastodon.social because it's "too big" would handle Tumblr with its 300 mil MAU federating

This feels totally apt:
