@tchambers very interesting. I might have switched to Tumblr if I'd known that... Actually maybe not, as I've wanted to join Mastodon for a while anyway 😅 but hopefully it'll mean I can follow people who made the move there rather than here!

James Koole

@tchambers It. Is. Happening. WordPress also has ActivityPub in beta (as a plugin). Hopefully they will move fast on making that official and maybe adding to Core.

blherrou

@jameskoole @tchambers any idea how this plays out in terms of eg mastodon users interacting with Tumblr posts?

James Koole

@blherrou @tchambers Take a peek at micro.blog which is pretty similar to Tumbr, and has ActivityPub integration. micro.blog/ (it's getting hammered at the moment like everything else Fediverse so it might be a little slow).

blherrou

@jameskoole @tchambers what I'm interested in is fediverse integration with existing, non-federated social networks and how that will play out. I'm not interested in a Tumblr alternative.

Natasha Nox 🇺🇦🇵🇸

@jameskoole @tchambers they should somewhat decouple what gets posted though, and make it possible to toot independently from blogposts to answer on things etc... right now the Plugin ain't really viable for many, me included.

Vladislav

@tchambers Next is #Twitter? 😀 And then social market monopoly again (with Jack and Zuck)? No way...

Fifi Lamoura

@vladmasslove @tchambers I have suspicions that's exactly what BlueSky is, Jack's play to monetize the fediverse. (It's also kind of interesting that I'm seeing no talk about BlueSky, the part of Twitter that Jack took with him when he sold to Musk....oops, just googled and it seems that a relatively quiet promotional campaign has started.)

Vladislav

@fifilamoura @tchambers basically...they can diversify (Jack and Elon) if they connect to two protocols and nobody can get rid of this commercial scam...need safety measures...now

Fifi Lamoura

@vladmasslove @tchambers To be clear, I could be totally wrong and this is pure uninformed speculation. I'm just suspicious of what billionaires are up to and always assume it's going to be harmful and exploitative until it's proven otherwise (which isn't the case that often).

Rumblestiltskin

@vladmasslove @tchambers As long as they are using the open protocol of ActivityPub it should be fine. Certain Fediverse instances will block that instance. Likely the users that have already left that site will stick to a smaller instance more in line with what they want.

Iron Raptor :verified:

@tchambers Still won't go back onto Tumblr. I do not forget "Female presenting nipples" ban, as well as trying to use an algorithm to sus out NSFW art and tagged everything BUT.

Pixdigit :verified:

@Ironraptor well, they changed hands multiple times since then

Iron Raptor :verified:

@Pixdigit It has, but it's still nowhere near where it used to be. I'm staying off Tumblr because I just... do not trust it. I'm also remember very vividly the level of fandom gatekeeping during the Steven Universe era.

@tchambers Who (TF) is Matt Mullenweg and his relationship with tumblr ?

Rogers Cadenhead

@cgx @tchambers He's the founder of WordPress, which acquired Tumblr in 2019.

Peter du Toit

@cgx Founder and CEO of Automattic who own Wordpress and recently acquired Tumblr. He has been hands on at Tumblr since the acquisition.

vinz

@cgx Lead dev of Wordpress, founder of Automattic who owns tumblr.

@tchambers@indieweb.social Might this be the break through of a decentralized social media? Tumblr joining the fediverse would be a massive increase in users.

Jim

@tchambers That's amusing, in a way. They were the last wave before the current one!

Sharon Faulk

@tchambers That is good. I have had a tumblog for years but it have been inactive for a long time. I recently went back and had forgotten it would cross post to Twitter but nothing else.

comrade porcupine

@tchambers Yay, Tumblr, the place -- the place where young teens that I know found all the "great" content on how to self-harm, cultivate eating disorders, and craft suicide notes.
That will be a really fun moderation situation for the fediverse.
Just sayin'

hacknorris

@tchambers wut? once had thought ( yet before fedi ) to go there o.O

Nyoelle

@tchambers Some of my friends went to tumblr, so that is definitely going to be useful for me :D

Koen

@tchambers that is pretty cool. Curieus to see how _ASAP_ they can do that.

pippzipp :bretagne: ꙮꙮꙮ

@tchambers not a good news if they start overflowing instances with requests

Simon Scarfe

@tchambers any idea on whether this will have an effect on existing server load/queues/etc? That's a lot of new content and users to potentially federate with.

Tim Chambers

@Simonscarfe interesting question…it might actually help - as tumblr users wouldn’t have to jump to other servers.

grahamsz

@Simonscarfe @tchambers I'm certainly no expert, but my understanding is that the load would come from users on this server subscribing to tumblr feeds.Tumblr's massive backlog of content wouldn't really do anything to any servers but their own.

Simon Scarfe

@grahamsz @tchambers I expect that’s correct - content doesn’t get “pushed on” to a server, unless a user requests it. I guess the only risk is very popular content, which we’re starting to see anyway with more notable folk joining the fediverse.

forteller

@tchambers It's happeniiiiiing :ablobcatbongo: :blobrainbow: :rainbowdance:

Aalaap Ghag 🔵

@tchambers I've been trying to find Matt out here and he's just not showing up! Now i know why!

razze

@tchambers not sure if this is Microsofts embrace and extinguish playbook

Jakob

@razze Matt Mullenweg and EEE? Chances are rather low imo.

Dam

@tchambers This is a BIG fucking deal! That's a whole lot of users and art that will suddenly be accessible to the Fediverse. Also, a whole lot of people who aren't sure about Mastodon but already have Tumblr accounts will suddenly have an entry point.

Dr J. Wallace

@DamnCatOnMyDesk @tchambers is the endgame a tie from Wordpress to the fediverse as that would be very useful.

Dam

@jeawallace @tchambers I mean, the WordPress ActivityPub plugin already exists, so I suspect they will just refine it.

Dave "Wear A Goddamn Mask" Cochran :donor:

@tchambers ...wait, does that mean that mastodon users will be able to natively follow tumblr blogs, or that they're making their own instance for tumblr users, or..?

jack
@tchambers this is a joke right? they hardly can run their own moderation systems
_jayrope (moving to Hubzilla)

@tchambers
A 3rd party comparison from #uMatrix below is showing, why tumblr isn't all too interesting in terms of using it - activity.pub or not. Mastodon seems to run no 3rd party connection sin background, respectively no 3rd party tracking either.
tumblr then, oh well, that's the usual story: "if you aren't the client you are the product".

gra

@jayrope @tchambers agreed. But a *very* clever move by them if true. Lots don't care.

Doug Sheppard

@tchambers Even more of a shrewd move than when Tumblr started undercutting the competition by offering *two* checkmarks for $8.

Sciasm

@tchambers is this legit? Holy shit 😍😍😍

j.r

@tchambers not sure if this will be a good thing...

Björn

@tchambers I wonder how much that will do since #Tumblr isn't #foss and the ecosystem around is pretty much dead.

Jason Evangelho

@thaodan Unless it was a fever dream, I SWEAR I read a post from Tumblr's CEO that it plans to go open source. Problem is, I can't find it to save my life.

CrowPunk

@tchambers I’m both excited and terrified haha

IanJHill

@tchambers

This is amazing, now tell him to get WordPress comments and other features to integrate with activity pub as well and I can connect all my social media and inter-share.

That is the future of my dreams.

Adnan 👦🦀

@IanJHill @tchambers

I think Tumblr is a “social network” so they are focusing on it. They have premium plans on Tumblr (removes ads, etc) so they must believe it can generate revenue.

Festive Leo ✨🇺🇦

@tchambers It's going to be very interesting to see how instance admins who defederate from mastodon.social because it's "too big" would handle Tumblr with its 300 mil MAU federating
