Opinion: Normalize calling #Mastodon a social *network* instead of social media. (I'm not sure when we as a society switched over to calling platforms like this "social media" but let's take it back!)

 @killyourfm Trying hard not to call it a platform. A platform has one surface at the bottom. Mastodon has many @killyourfm "Media" sounds very commercial. Like New Media from American Gods (Neil Gaiman) I think I prefer the #Fediverse 😁  @killyourfm *Were* the other ones networks? 🤔 The people formed a network. The platform did not. 🤔🤔 I'm putting this behind a CW (which I like to refer to as a "Content Wrapper" now) because not everyone wants to be drowning in #Mastodon talk on Mastodon 😆 But I find this extraordinary, and a clear signal that the #Fediverse will continue to explode in popularity. This will come with growing pains. Be patient with the new people, because they'll be curious and have tons of questions. Be patient with your server admins too. They're working REAL hard right now!

In the process of migrating from #Twitter and trying to tread lightly and not treat this like a #Twitter clone. It's clearly not, but will take some getting used to.

@killyourfm I wholeheartedly agree. Back in the time I was on BBSes. Moderation was heavy. Environment was amazing. I discovered (as many of you have) that it's a completely different vibe here. Different people. Different habits. Different interests. Zero algorithms. And people here are more interested in deeper conversations. Combined with the extra characters and (gasp!) actual editing capabilities, I'm making an effort to post unique content here that isn't just copied from Twitter. LET'S GO!

@killyourfm I really appreciate this move of yours. I usually stop following people who just cross-post.  @killyourfm I think the pro move is to post here exclusively and cross-post to Twitter. ;) Someday, your favorite band, songs, or albums could just disappear from Spotify or Tidal or YouTube Music, or ALL the streaming platforms. Buy their music. Physical or DRM-free digital. Bandcamp is one of the best places to find affordable DRM-free digital copies of a band's music. And when you guy physical, you also get immediate digital downloads. But if your favorites aren't there, the iTunes store is a surprisingly good alternative. Songs there are still DRM-free, and they're still 99 cents US.   PSA for users of #NoiseTorch, an app I've heavily endorsed and happen to love. Hope things end up OK, but please veer on the safe side and act appropriately. Boosts appreciated to get the word out. @killyourfm the same person hates people independently packaging their software for distros from the source code in the first place... Kind of a "expected that" for me... That was all kinds of fun! YESSSS! And support for Wine/Proton is included. 12
