Opinion: Normalize calling #Mastodon a social *network* instead of social media.

(I'm not sure when we as a society switched over to calling platforms like this "social media" but let's take it back!)

@killyourfm Trying hard not to call it a platform. A platform has one surface at the bottom. Mastodon has many

@killyourfm "Media" sounds very commercial. Like New Media from American Gods (Neil Gaiman)
Is Musk Technical Boy, I wonder?

I think I prefer the #Fediverse 😁

@killyourfm *Were* the other ones networks? 🤔 The people formed a network. The platform did not. 🤔🤔

I'm putting this behind a CW (which I like to refer to as a "Content Wrapper" now) because not everyone wants to be drowning in #Mastodon talk on Mastodon 😆

But I find this extraordinary, and a clear signal that the #Fediverse will continue to explode in popularity.

This will come with growing pains. Be patient with the new people, because they'll be curious and have tons of questions.

Be patient with your server admins too. They're working REAL hard right now!

@killyourfm Hi Jason. I'm one of the noobs here. In the process of migrating from #Twitter and trying to tread lightly and not treat this like a #Twitter clone. It's clearly not, but will take some getting used to.

"If you allow the most intolerant voices to be as loud as they want to, you’re going to shut down voices of different opinions as well. So allowing free speech by just allowing all speech is not actually leading to free speech, it just leads to a cesspit of hate.

I think that is a very uniquely American idea of creating this marketplace of ideas where you can say anything you want completely without limits."

@killyourfm I wholeheartedly agree. Back in the time I was on BBSes. Moderation was heavy. Environment was amazing.

@killyourfm
Thank you for reminding me that I wanted to make a similar QSG video myself.
I hope that this will help new users to get more comfortable.

A few months ago I stopped crossposting from Twitter to Mastodon.

Why?

I discovered (as many of you have) that it's a completely different vibe here. Different people. Different habits. Different interests.

Zero algorithms.

And people here are more interested in deeper conversations.

Combined with the extra characters and (gasp!) actual editing capabilities, I'm making an effort to post unique content here that isn't just copied from Twitter.

LET'S GO!

@killyourfm Two rules here, post good stuff and be nice and you will grow. We are all equals and there is no way to jump to the head of the line by gaming the algorithm

@killyourfm I really appreciate this move of yours. I usually stop following people who just cross-post.
Even though a fair share of my posts are the same both on Mastodon and Twitter, I've never done cross-posting. IMO the fact that you're willing to post the message manually is a sign that you're also ready to have interactions with your followers which is the essence for social media.

Mike Rockwell

@killyourfm I think the pro move is to post here exclusively and cross-post to Twitter. ;)

Someday, your favorite band, songs, or albums could just disappear from Spotify or Tidal or YouTube Music, or ALL the streaming platforms.

Buy their music. Physical or DRM-free digital.

Seasons of Jason

Bandcamp is one of the best places to find affordable DRM-free digital copies of a band's music. And when you guy physical, you also get immediate digital downloads.

But if your favorites aren't there, the iTunes store is a surprisingly good alternative.

Songs there are still DRM-free, and they're still 99 cents US.

This is absolutely fucking beautiful vinyl.

Tidal pays musicians the most per stream. Pandora and Spotify pay the least.

PSA for users of #NoiseTorch, an app I've heavily endorsed and happen to love. Hope things end up OK, but please veer on the safe side and act appropriately.

Boosts appreciated to get the word out.

@killyourfm the same person hates people independently packaging their software for distros from the source code in the first place... Kind of a "expected that" for me...

That was all kinds of fun!
Nearly 3 hours chatting with these awesome dudes about Steam Deck. Hosted and recorded ON Steam Deck!
Stay tuned to see where you can listen and watch!

YESSSS! And support for Wine/Proton is included.
Linux gaming gets a HUGE shot in the arm with this move. (And it's probably thanks to the #SteamDeck)
