"If you allow the most intolerant voices to be as loud as they want to, youโ€™re going to shut down voices of different opinions as well. So allowing free speech by just allowing all speech is not actually leading to free speech, it just leads to a cesspit of hate.

I think that is a very uniquely American idea of creating this marketplace of ideas where you can say anything you want completely without limits."

no, there is no need for democracy to justify cover letter agencies when having working postal services.

@killyourfm A uniquely American idea that most Americans don't hold. Ha ha

@killyourfm If this is not one of the most well thought out and well phrased statements about how free speech actually works and why everybody shouting into the void doesn't work... Wow. Amazing.

@schykle I admire this man so much after reading this interview.

@killyourfm see this right here makes me feel extra certain Iโ€™ve come to the right place.

Deleting the big four apps is hella scary because a lot of our genuine connections have been made on them. So do you lose those when you leave?

Kinda yeah. I am not in contact with as many people as I used to be. But. The prospects of something better can sometimes result in loss. ๐Ÿฅน๐Ÿ’™ Mental health has dramatically improved and the people I *want* in my life and who want me in theirs.. well we found each other outside of those platforms.

@quinnthehuman I completely hear what you're saying. I have made not just great connections and friendships but I've acquired jobs via social media!

But the relationships that really matter... there's no reason they can't extend beyond corporate-owned walls!

@killyourfm He's from Germany where they actually have hate speech laws because they know what happens if you don't reign in the speech of fucking Nazis

@Merovie indeed. Sadly, I genuinely believe America is headed down the same path. (Note: I'm American but living in Croatia since 2017.)

@killyourfm I'm in Texas and if I see one more tankie say "voting as harm reduction doesn't work" I'm going to scream.

Will the GOP be voted out in the Texas mid-terms? Probably not.

But that's no excuse not to try because this shit is genuinely frightening. Especially since I am on disability:

We're back to Hume: what does 'tolerance' or 'intolerance' mean? Ask 20 people, you get 20 answers. Does it mean laissez faire? Does it mean hunt down and genocide?

Or does it mean don't bring that stuff in here? And don't sell them airtime that then gets thrust in my face as an advert...

Repression doesn't work. Historically it backfires. On the other hand, good fences make good neighbours.

@killyourfm I wholeheartedly agree. Back in the time I was on BBSes. Moderation was heavy. Environment was amazing.
