Seasons of Jason

After all this time, I am FINALLY playing Steam Deck with another friend in the same room, via Remote Play Together, and it's freaking AWESOME.

Seasons of Jason

Update: She just bought Vampire Survivors AND asked about Linux. Win/win.

I have zero confidence left in Mozilla's leadership. In fact, here's a bold prediction: the Thunderbird team (operating under the wholly owned subsidiary known as MZLA) will be more profitable within 5 years than Mozilla Corporation. Yes, that same dying product Mozilla abandoned in 2012. The one the COMMUNITY kept alive and the one that is now thriving.

Eventually Mozilla will approach MZLA begging them to come back...

(Note that I'm saying this as someone no longer employed there.)

@killyourfm Thunderbird is great. Nuff said really. My desktop client on all machines now and K-9 on the Android phone. The only thing that isn't super fast is where I still have to access Gmail 'because legacy'... but not for much longer. IMAP into my own mail server accounts is lightning fast but the g-behemoth... soon be gone!
Firefox is still working well for me but I recall when I ditched it some years ago, after it contracted 'galloping featuritis' and ground to a snail's pace 😕

One of the weirdest disconnects happened a few months ago when I received a Mozilla Foundation newsletter about the evils of big corporations building unethical AI. It was a donation appeal so they could gear up to "fight" against companies like OpenAI.

This doesn't seem strange until you consider that Mozilla is currently paying a ChatGPT Enterprise license for all ~1000 of its employees. And encouraging them to use it for productivity, brainstorming, & code.

Yea, it didn't sit well. At all.

@killyourfm Feels like Mozilla grows ever less competent by day.

No ✅ -- no problem.

A complete lack of Deck Verified status hasn’t stopped Black Myth: Wukong from rushing to the top of the “Steam Deck Top Played” chart.

@killyourfm
Valve did their job well on providing compatibility layer with Windows games. So well that you can just ignore those labels and in almost all cases you'll be fine.

The conversation around gaming on Linux has changed significantly during the last several years. It’s a success story engineered by passionate developers working on the Linux kernel and the open-source graphics stack (and certainly bolstered by the Steam Deck).

Don’t worry, this isn’t going to be a history lesson, but it’s an appropriate way to introduce yet another performance victory Linux is claiming over Windows.

@killyourfm I've recently got a racing wheel and been playing some racing games on the Framework 13 with Ryzen 5, and it blows me away how well it runs games at 1080p. Also Linux compatibility has been great.

@killyourfm gaming on Linux is great but it still has many things to improve upon in order to be on par with the ease of use it has on windows, using dedicated apps and scripts to make games work is not ideal and it can and often constrict the support for said games to very specific versions which is not so desirable, some work should be done to support easier game installations and not only running the games themselves...

Professor Code

@killyourfm Which version of Steam did you use, though? Is it the one from the RPMFusion repo or the Flatpak?

Here's an Alpaca I drew...
when I was 44 years old.

Child's drawing of a long-necked animal with four legs, possibly a dinosaur, colored in brown and pink, with feathers or a crest on its head and tail.

@killyourfm I must admit, you're better than me at this 😢

From now on when people ask that classic question "So, what do you do?" my answer will be "I'm a musician. I just happen to support that pursuit with a full-time marketing job."

When you meet someone, tell them who you truly are, not what you do to pay the bills.

@killyourfm Absolutely correct. I always was and always will be a game developer no matter what. This is one of the coolest statements I've seen on social media. Kudos! :)

@killyourfm A friend of mine always said he was a sculptor (he was) but he'd never made a dime at it, and that's no shame.

I was literally thumping out rhythms I want on my next album while walking with friends today lol. NO! YOU HAVEN'T EVEN FINISHED THE FIRST ONE YET?

Seasons of Jason

It takes 12,000 plays on Spotify for a band to make the same as you buying one of their T-shirts.

Jfrites

@killyourfm @pauliehedron that’s why I have a drawer full of @goosetheband shrits and an Apple Music library of their @bandcampunited albums!

Jon

@killyourfm Guess we'll need to play the album on repeat 12000 times! 😁

@killyourfm Wow, so good👍 . Great Job Jason! I love the song, your drumming skills... and your gear (not talking about your mac though😜 )

Happy birthday, Proton!
And a heartfelt thanks to @codeweavers, Valve, and everyone else in the open source community for changing #Linux #gaming forever.

@killyourfm is that all the categories of data that an app is allowed to collect on iOS ? Did they leave anything out?

Sometimes it's REALLY tough to keep a secret. But now that the secret's out...

Our new logo is designed by @jonhicks, the creator of the original Firefox and Thunderbird logos. It will make its way to you when Thunderbird 115 launches this summer!

Welcome back to the @Linux4Everyone podcast!

A talk at #LAS2023 about software sustainability -- and the environmental impact of power-hungry code -- was a shocking wake-up call that's too important to ignore. So, please give a warm welcome to the creator of that talk, @kde's Joseph P. De Veaugh-Geiss

For almost 4 decades I have been obsessed with #drums. I air drummed all over everything. I spent a good 8 years playing the crap out of Rock Band's Pro/Expert drum mode and destroying at least 3 of those fake plastic toys. But it DID teach me some fundamentals...

Today, at 47 years old, I finally have the real thing. (Sure, they're digital drums, but you get my meaning.)

This is my drum kit. There are many others like it, but this one is mine.

(Yes, area rug is incoming...)

An Alesis Nitro Mesh drum kit on a hardwood floor. The kit features a drum stool, 3 cymbals, a snare, a kick-drum, and 3 toms.

I hope this song puts me on the map. In any case, I am genuinely proud of how it turned out!

You can stream it now from #Bandcamp, or pay what you want to own it forever.

Some backstory: I sat with this song in an "almost finished" state for 3 years, because I held this belief that it needed a traditional chorus instead of just 3 verses that built in intensity.

Then I read Rick Rubin's "The Creative Act" and was absolutely convinced that I HAD finished it years ago. Because it moved ME and resonated with ME.

If the artist is happy with the work, then the work is complete. Screw expectations.

So I polished it up, added bass, mixed, and voila!

Let me use an #OpenSource project I'm involved in - @thunderbird - to demonstrate the importance of simply asking for donations.

In Dec 2022, for the 1st time, we introduced a one-time, in-app appeal. When our users updated to the newest release, their default browser opened the page I've attached.

They only saw this page ONCE.

We received an astounding $3.5m in donations, doubling our 2022 revenue goal in one month. It was the project's biggest month in history.

#FOSS #Linux #Funding

Did you know that less than 1% of Thunderbird users fund all the work we do? Not too long ago Thunderbird was on the verge of extinction. It's because of donations from that small group of users that we are here today! We don’t show advertisements or sell your data and we are completely funded by donations from our community. Help keep Thunderbird / e Thunderbird’s mission is to offer a time and privacy-respecting, customizable communication experience that gives you control of your data and experience. Free to everyone! Accomplishing that mission means keeping Thunderbird secure, maintaining complex server infrastructure, updating old code, fixing bugs and developing new features. These activities aren’t cheap - requiring talented software engineers and robust infrastructure. So today we’re asking you to help us out. If you get value from using Thunderbird, please consider giving a donation to support it!
