They're one of the higher-paying services, and used to reach out to artists through their Direct Artists Payout program. Buying music or subscribing on Patreon-like services is still the best you can do. For example, I could send every domestic American who purchases my music on, I think, either of two services (including the biggest), a personalized thank-you postcard. A rare case where I don't mind a provider knowing what I do, since they actually can offer me improved recommendations. I really liked Apple's "genius playlist" feature. "Give me more like this, please." Music and YouTube are both not terrible. Half a cent per stream or so, and again, the payout rates vary by popularity. To a degree I can pick if my track is sold for 99¢, or $1.49, but not on streaming.  @glowl @krusynth 150+ distribution targets, and somehow that isn't one of them. [Edit to clarify the hilarious reason I don't just self-publish my music on that site: my label issues DMCAs. They had to DMCA my own "making of" YouTube videos, so indirectly I threatened myself for publishing my own material. The sad thing is that it looks like they were having some serious issues with board members and governance and have started to shut down as per this community post. I'd like to see a decentralised alternative to #BandCamp, and a lot of projects have tried. The same musicians tell me they all suck to use, or fail to reach the critical mass of artists and listeners required to be effective. Seems to me the only effective way to do this is for it to be led by artists, not web developers or decentralisation activists. Maybe a consortium of musicians' unions/ associations could be formed to co-design a decentralised platform with Free Code devs? The payment system is one of the larger challenges. Networking/promotion, word of mouth etc, is a cornerstone. Streaming of some fashion plays the part of radio stations. *odd thought could fediverse support a listening “channel”, a radio station, as part of its functionality? that is add in audio stream as part of its API, music to go with bloom scrolling. If you really like the music your artists produce please consider actually purchasing an album or the track itself, don't just stream. Then you can even listen to music after the collapse of the internet. Or the provider.
