@krusynth As a musician with music distributed across numerous sites, Spotify pays me 0.28¢ per listen. One quarter of a cent.  Music and YouTube pay me slightly more than half a cent.

Facebook / Instagram / Reels?
$0.000255/stream. Two and a half. Hundredths. Of a cent.

If you really like the music your artists produce please consider actually purchasing an album or the track itself, don't just stream. Then you can even listen to music after the collapse of the internet. Or the provider.

@alice @krusynth do you know what the rates are for Tidal?

Rev. GothAlice

@gringomedia @krusynth 1.3¢ or so? (And that's an upper range after doing some searching. My own nets three quarters of a cent? But I'm not <insert pop artist here>.) They're one of the higher-paying services, and used to reach out to artists through their Direct Artists Payout program. But they withdrew that program with final payout in April.

@alice @gringomedia @krusynth They got a leadership change around that time I think. Expect enshittification.
Also they're as guilty in regards to user profiling and data brokerage as everyone else.

Buying music or subscribing on Patreon-like services is still the best you can do.

@Natanox

Agreed there, though… 🤔

You might be concerned about some of the PII (personally identifying information) I receive in my sales reports.

For example, I could send every domestic American who purchases my music on, I think, either of two services (including the biggest), a personalized thank-you postcard.

That… might take a moment to sink in. I wasn't happy to receive what's needed for this in my sales reports.

@alice @gringomedia @krusynth The fuck?

I'm from the EU, but still; why is the home address a necessary information on those sale websites? (ô.o) That would indeed bugger me out somewhat.

Then again, it's the US.

Rev. GothAlice

@Natanox @gringomedia @krusynth Not the full address, but with American "zip codes", it's close e-fscking-nough. (Part of why I limited the statement to domestic Americans. 😉)

Agree, strongly agree. I miss the old iTunes and my > 10k track library of all genres I love. It’s still someplace on a drive somewhere, but I want my tracks back dammit.

fuck apple for destroying something I liked.

Rev. GothAlice

@GhostOnTheHalfShell @krusynth I still have an iTunes Match subscription. Never let it lapse, and it's still happily matching tracks and off-site storing a good majority of my library, providing good quality AAC-256 DRM-free replacements for some of my lower-quality older MP3s.

27,423 tracks.
No duplicates.
(Mixes yes, straight dupes no.)
77 days playing 24/7.
I am my own radio station.

There's been some weirdness re: a few artist back-catalogs, but I still have the record of them in my lib.

@alice @krusynth

I’d like to get back to the original deal that a subscription to Apple Id mac.com or whatever got you that service included.

@alice @krusynth
Is Apple Music better? We pay for that, so I thought it would be. And yes, I generally stream stuff I already own. Streaming is my way to make a randomized playlist.

Rev. GothAlice

@CassandraVert @krusynth Streaming can be absolutely wonderful for discovery, no question! A rare case where I don't mind a provider knowing what I do, since they actually can offer me improved recommendations. I really liked Apple's "genius playlist" feature. "Give me more like this, please."

 Music and YouTube are both not terrible. Half a cent per stream or so, and again, the payout rates vary by popularity. To a degree I can pick if my track is sold for 99¢, or $1.49, but not on streaming.

Rev. GothAlice

@glowl @krusynth 150+ distribution targets, and somehow that isn't one of them. I'm going to have a chat with my label to get that corrected.

I love the idea behind this site.

[Edit to clarify the hilarious reason I don't just self-publish my music on that site: my label issues DMCAs. They had to DMCA my own "making of" YouTube videos, so indirectly I threatened myself for publishing my own material. It was hilarious, but they had to in order to demonstrate they're protecting my IP. 😂]

@glowl I absolutely love the concept of a democratically owned and operated streaming co-op. The sad thing is that it looks like they were having some serious issues with board members and governance and have started to shut down as per this community post. I think there are other such services but they are exceptionally small at this time. community.resonate.coop/t/addr
