Can I ask a favour?

There has been much interest in , the Fediverse's video platform. It's really cool and its accounts can be followed from Mastodon etc.

However, PeerTubers sometimes don't get followers and views, and they need followers for their videos to be noticed/searchable by the Fediverse's federation system, so it's catch-22.

This cycle would be broken if more people followed PeerTubers, so here's a thread of some active accounts to follow! (And feel free to share!)

@FediFollows is there a good instance to open up an account that you recommend? most of them seem closed to me; sorry if you've posted about this before!

p.s. Don't worry if an account looks blank, they have all posted! A blank profile just means no one on your server has followed the account yet. Follow them so that your server will notice their videos! 👍

After you follow an account, anything they upload from then on will be visible from your server too.

Book replied to FediFollows

@FediFollows Thanks for telling us about the blank followers/videos. I added a bunch which look interesting and I thought I was doing something wrong.

Now, where can we watch the vidbeo?!

Your Autistic Life replied to FediFollows

@FediFollows I thought that was general advice. You're giving advice regarding the list you provided.

For general advice, I'd suggest opening the profile on the original instance first, so that you can see what they do post and whether it is palatable to you. Then you can follow them.

DELETED replied to FediFollows

@FediFollows I feel powerful now I've followed a few of these. 😂

Sean replied to FediFollows

@FediFollows is there a dedicated peer tube app for watching videos on iOS?

Dmian replied to Sean

@Craktok @FediFollows No dedicated app, afaik. The easiest (laziest) way is to follow the channels from your Mastodon app and watch the videos using that.

Sean replied to Dmian

@dmian @FediFollows That’s a shame. I’d like a place to browse like the YouTube app. Thanks for the info.

@FediFollows @neweuropeanbauhaus @efca @edps @euspa @mrfunkedude @chriswere @hamishtpb@video.thepolarbear.co.uk @hamishtpb@watch.thepolarbear.co.uk @art thanks for posting. There are a number of European based accounts here I'm very interested in! I never knew they were here.

Mr. Funk E. Dude

@FediFollows Totally missed this post. Now I know why I've gotten the extra subscribers.

Thanks!

Mr. Funk E. Dude

@FediFollows Just to get it right, the @ listed for me is my Vlogging, Gaming, Short form, and Cooking PeerTube. To see me live, you should also follow @mrfunkedude_live

Thanks!

Robert Kingett on hiatus

@FediFollows Thank you! Is there a dedicated page/category in the Fedi directory for active PeerTube channels?

Moxxi ❄️

@FediFollows yay! I did some filming yesterday and this weekend I'll do the Halloween costume if Moxxi isn't in a full-body cast or something.

Moxxi ❄️

@FediFollows

1. it just hit me that I can probably install (makertube.net) from the web page on my phone (not a genius).

2. I was a little scared to look but what the shit

Rua

@FediFollows I had some issues following a PeerTuber because it wasn't doing what I expected it to. That seems like something worth addressing?

chitter.xyz/@ruawhitepaw/11126

Michelle / The Giddy Stitcher

@ruawhitepaw Fwiw this doesn't seem to be a universal thing, I have channels showing up in my mastodon feed no problem.

Is it possible the channel you were looking at just isn't federated with your server yet? In which case it would appear blank until someone subscribes and a new video is posted.

Rua

@thegiddystitcher chitter.xyz/@janbeta@makertube (the channel) is shown to have 4 posts, but no posts are shown.

chitter.xyz/@jan_beta@makertub (the account/user) is shown to have 4 posts, and the posts are shown.

Michelle / The Giddy Stitcher

@ruawhitepaw His channel is blank when viewed from sunny.garden too, but the account only has one video showing. So yeah, looks like it's just the usual federation thing.

For example my channel at @thegiddystitcher@makertube.net shows up with lots of videos when viewed from sunny.garden, but if nobody on your server follows it it'll be empty from your pov.

Rua

@thegiddystitcher I'm following both profiles though, and have been for a few days. So they should both be equally federated right?

Michelle / The Giddy Stitcher

@ruawhitepaw Yep! So when a new video drops (last one looks like it was 6 days ago) you should see it in the channel profile too.

If new videos don't show up then there really is something wrong, but atm it looks like it might just be the usual confusing federation rules 😁

MossyQuartz

@thegiddystitcher@sunny.garden @ruawhitepaw @thegiddystitcher@makertube.net
Oh! I saw a video last night and was confused on how to follow The Giddy Stitcher. I really hope that I just now figured out how! I got a bad grade in sewing back in 1971 and am only now feeling enough confidence to try a few arts and crafts and yarn and sew items. I liked what I watched!

Michelle / The Giddy Stitcher

@MossyQuartz If you have any trouble figuring it out do let me know! PeerTube stuff is a bit confusing even by usual Fediverse standards 😅

Dmian

@ruawhitepaw @thegiddystitcher Hey Rua! Do you disable boots from accounts when you follow? Because I do it always, and noticed that the PeerTube user posts the actual videos on Mastodon from all their channels, but the channel only boosts the videos of that particular channel. If you disable boosts from the channel you follow you’ll see no videos from it. So, follow the user account or allow the boosts from the specific channel. I hope that solves your problem.

Jigme Datse

@ruawhitepaw @FediFollows What you mention about following, I have to agree. If you've not done so, either post an issue on the git repository (I think they're on github), or their forum. I'd call that a bug (as a person running a PeerTube instance). I'm *not* certain if it's a version issue, so the forum may be more appropriate.

Laura Lis Scott

@ruawhitepaw @FediFollows Same. Many accounts listed have no videos.

For one creator I tried the [mastodon] web interface, saw a notice about posts on a “previous account” & that led to an actual channel account with videos—which I had to copy/paste into search to be able to follow.

Maybe creator bios need to include links to their channel accounts so people can follow. But that’s a kludge. Their channels should be automatically findable, yes?

Fosstonaut (Gamey) :tux:

@FediFollows I have to disagree, Peertubes awful take on federation makes that cycle endless!

Fosstonaut (Gamey) :tux:

@JSSchlegel @FediFollows They have a opt in design for the entire platform which isolates individual instances completely with the exception of manually approved circles. Yes you can find everyone on Mastodon and other more open Activitypub services but you can't find them on your Peertube instance and it might just be my opinion but I think that's a terrible approach and a main roadblock for adoption!

Armando 🎃👻💀

@FediFollows@social.growyourown.services not super familiar with PeerTube but it seems like there's the poster's account and then each channel has its own account. And if you want to get the videos on your timeline you have to follow the channel, not the main account. Might be worth pointing it out to folks.

AuraCat (they/she)

@FediFollows Hello! I hope I am not bothering you.
This is not directly related to your thread, but I'd like to suggest a quite minor correction, for your website, if you don't mind of course.
Just one little word.

Can I make that suggestion?

Feoh

@FediFollows You are doing SUCH excellent work signal boosting these fine folks! Excellent thread! I followed a bunch! :) THANK YOU!

spaduf

@FediFollows Major advantage to following from Mastodon in these early days is it puts you in a better position to help these channels grow! If the boost button is right there things are a lot more likely to go viral.

Sam at BLAG

@FediFollows I use Tusky for using Mastodon on my mobile, and after following some of these accounts they appear to have no content.

Pictured are what I see for posts and media in one case, but the same happened for each one that I followed.

Am I doing something wrong?

SuperMoosie

@blag
This also happens to Mastodon accounts that your instance doesn't know about.

If no body on your instance is already following a particular account or it isn't coming in via a relay, then posts doesn't appear in the federated tab or in hashtag searchs. It also previous posts don't get seen when you first follow them.

Instances with a small amount of followers see a lot less posts than larger instances with lots of people following lots of posts.

You will see any new posts they put up from now on.

If you tap on the tusky screen under their account, it will take you to the web view of their instance directly, where you should be able to get everything they have posted

Pierre

@FediFollows Thank you very much! I discovered and followed several of these accounts 🙂

Graceless Hippo

@FediFollows

Sorry if this is a stupid question: do I just follow them from my own instance as I would any other profile in the fediverse? Or do I need to find them in PeerTube?

Graceless Hippo

@FediFollows

I've just started following loads but I'm worried I'm not doing it right

Michelle / The Giddy Stitcher

@GracelessHippo You're doing it right! The profiles might look blank for you atm but once you're following you'll see new videos that get posted 🙂

Ethan

@FediFollows @feditips Where can we actually see the PeerTube videos? New to this whole concept!

Michelle / The Giddy Stitcher

@xirrin You'll see new videos from accounts you're following in your feed, and they'll show up on the above linked account pages too. But in the meantime if your server doesn't have the videos federated yet you'll need to visit the actual PeerTube page.

I'm using Tusky right now and when viewing a profile I can hit the three dot menu and "open in browser" to go straight there, can't remember where the option is in browser but you get the idea! 😄

Arcaik

@FediFollows
From the top of my head:
@histony - French channel talking about history
@heu.reka_channel - French channel talking about economy

Pusher Of Pixels

@FediFollows a question, does search find them? Or is it just searching Mastodon stuff?

The latter would be understandable, but seems like there's a missing link to have visibility by default?

Michelle / The Giddy Stitcher

@pixelpusher220 You can find PeerTube accounts and hashtags in search as normal, but as with anything your server needs to know the account exists first hence this push to get people following us all more widely! 😄

Chancerubbage

@FediFollows @feditips

I can’t help but think of this in terms of bandwidth costs.

Moxxi ❄️

@FediFollows yeah, I agree. I've noticed that one video had like 5 views on and the non-promoted YouTube backup had 3k views and more engagement. I need to do better myself as I tend to default to YouTube because the app is convenient.

polycosmos

@FediFollows Oh, I love but struggle to find content. Any tips?

Goose

@FediFollows the number of contributors on topics I enjoy is circling 0. Which is weird because the Fediverse doesn't normally have this problem.

lobster :firefish: :gi: :ablobcatbouncefast:

@FediFollows@social.growyourown.services

I likes them videos. I need videos of hackers in the final frenzy of saving the planet, cyber verse and their tin foil beanies on beam me up NSA sponsored corporate ferenghi mode. I won't laff they might have super powers like hitting buttons, installing mall wear or speaking in (translated) tongues …

😶🥸🤓🥳

bgtlover

@FediFollows hang on, peertubers don't get follower counts up if people on mastodon follow them? or is the problem that few people are following them in general?

𝗧𝗢𝗗 𝗠𝗔𝗙𝗙𝗜𝗡 :donate8dollars:

@FediFollows PeerTube needs someone to develop a mobile app for it to really move past the early adopters.

And adoption of its API by third-party posting tools.

FaizalR

@FediFollows I think peertube accounts need to interact more with fediverse.

🌻 Thoralf Will 🇺🇦🇮🇱

@FediFollows There is exactly one reason why I don’t use Peertube more:
There is no mobile app.

Sojourn :coffefiedyellow:

@FediFollows been awhile since I tried peertube. The videos are really snappy and response now, and the end user experience is really good! Though the content is definitely lacking.

doqunbop

@FediFollows Would it make sense to recommend PeerTubers to create accounts on big/related instances to follow themselves so their videos get pulled to those instances for discoverability?

Erik

@FediFollows oh my I followed three and now I already feel the benevolence coursing through my veins😂
