There is a new feature of Mastodon that I wanted to highlight for you all.

I had no use for the Lists feature before- but as of the recent 4.2 update, you can put some people you follow into a list- and then you can check a box in that list's details to NOT SHOW their posts in your main feed.

This could totally change Mastodon for me, in the best way.

I follow some newsy-political accounts, and often rush by them in the feed if I'm not in the mood to hear (more) bad news. Now I can put them in a list and not see them at all in and among the feed of real thoughts, pictures, artwork and jokes you amazing people share.

And when I actually feel like engaging with the news/politics of the world, I can pop over to that list and see only that stuff in there.

This way you can have customized feeds of different kinds of accounts, and just see your tried and true favorite people in the main feed.

It's a multi-Mastodon-feed experience, separated by mood and preference.
Which for me is brilliant!

@hopeward This is great, I was looking for that a while ago for a bot account that I might occasionally enjoy, but just posts way too much to be in my timeline.

David Hopeward

@neverpanic Glad you liked it! Yes, there are definitely bot accounts that I had abandoned cuz they’re so busy, but now I can corral them and just check in.

Clemens

@hopeward OK, that seems to work. The workflow is a bit weird though: it seems I can only add accounts I follow to lists, so I needed to follow the bot, edit the list to add it, change the list setting and then unfollow the bot so it doesn't show up in my main timeline.

Is that how it's supposed to work?

David Hopeward

@neverpanic I don’t think it will work if you unfollow.

Following or unfollowing is still top-level, primary and necessary.

The list thing just gives you options under that level.

Clemens

@hopeward Well then it doesn't work for me. I enabled the switch but still saw posts in my main timeline. On the other hand, I did unfollow but the list view isn't empty.

I'll check later to see if I see updates when they are posted by the bot.

David Hopeward

@neverpanic I think I saw what you’re describing… it doesn’t work backwards in your feed, but once the change is made it will sort the posts now, going forward.

Antoinne Sterk

@hopeward Nice, I had bookmarked this info somewhere to look into, but your use case had all the info I needed. I just activated this on my list with "booster" accounts. Finally my neatly curated timeline back while still having the possibility to get engulfed with boosts 👍

David Hopeward

@antoinnesterk Isn’t it nice? I’m glad you found the reminder useful. I’m really enjoying my main feed now!

Antoinne Sterk

@hopeward It's super. Would be perfect if you could "move" followed hashtags to these list too 😀

David Hopeward

@antoinnesterk Haha… wow, that’s very specific, but YES I get it l!

Julie Webgirl

@antoinnesterk @hopeward
Ohhhh good use case. I have unfollowed people I liked because of overboosting.

Da_Gut

@juliewebgirl @antoinnesterk @hopeward you can choose not to see a persons boosts, only their original posts. It’s buried somewhere in settings

Julie Webgirl

@Da_Gut @antoinnesterk @hopeward Ah yes, I do know that one, thanks. Problem is I like a lot of the boosts, and they don't talk themselves much at all, so really just have to be in the mood for it and not have it take over my whole feed. So this will work well I think!

Da_Gut

@juliewebgirl @antoinnesterk @hopeward more nuance and control is generally a good thing.

P Stewart

@Da_Gut @juliewebgirl @antoinnesterk @hopeward Ooh, I knew you could hide boosts *in general* from feeds, but had no idea you could adjust their visibility on a per-person level.

That'll deheadache my feeds quite a bit some days!

DELETED

@hopeward OMG, this is huge! I hated that I can't add people to lists who I don't follow, as some accounts I want easy access to without showing up on my TL. This is great!

David Hopeward

@allenstenhaus So glad you liked it! Yes, it takes Mastodon from really good to really great, for me.

Kat the Leopardess

@hopeward I find the list a great sanity saver. And sometimes it's a good tool for managing your mental health. I also take the news accounts that I follow and have put them in list like what you describe, and for the same reasons.

amd unlike Twitter, there is no algorithm to strong arm the content into my feed anyway.

David Hopeward

@Catwoman69y2k Yes it’s so good to control SocMeeds, instead of the other way around.

Annie

@hopeward Thanks David, Im glad you enjoy Mastodon so much. I have similar problems and actually feel like a first grader on social media at the moment. (They're probably better than I am...). Everything is somehow overwhelming and I can't process my timeline properly. I must really take some time and check all those new options during my autumn break. Have a nice day!🍂☘️

David Hopeward

@theappletree You’re welcome, Annie. I do enjoy all the connections to the world, and being able to shape when I’m seeing what is really helpful.

You have a great day too! 🍀

Robert Kingett backup

I'd also unfollow some hashtags that are clogging up your timeline too but I seriously need to start unfollowing people and using this lists feature more! @theappletree @hopeward

David Hopeward

@weirdwriter @theappletree I haven’t followed many hashtags, so that’s thankfully not an issue.

I’ve had to unfollow some people… and sometimes just disabling boosts and only seeing what they actually have to say themselves is the right choice.

Marlene Breitenstein Art

@hopeward This is such useful information and I’m so glad you shared it. This solves several problems for me, and it’s going to help me segment and enjoy Mastodon in the same ways you describe. News for me is the biggest downer also, but it’s important to see, just in a more controlled manner. (I also am delighted to see the “show replies” controls in you screen shot.) Thank you, David!

David Hopeward

@breitensteinart Great, and you’re welcome! Really the thanks go to the Mastodon developers… but this bit also solved problems for me, and I had to think it was maybe unnoticed.

(I’ve been getting a lot of people who were happy to hear about it!)

Human 3500

@hopeward In using this feature but I can't quite grok the "show replies to" feature. Do you have any insight into what that does? It must be different that the posting option where we can restrict who can see your post.

David Hopeward

@human3500 I’m re-replying to this because I think that control just has to do with whether replies from other people (to a post in a list) are also visible to me within that list.

So the choices are:

I wanna see replies to these posts IF they’re from people I follow.

I don’t wanna see replies from anyone unless I’ve also placed them in this List.

I don’t wanna see any replies to these posts in this list at all.

David Hopeward

@human3500 Excellent! It was good for me to figure it out, too.

David Hopeward

@human3500 I was looking at the choices in the Ivory iPhone app… it’s clearer there. 🤷🏻‍♂️

TransitBiker

@hopeward yay ghosted by even more people! But on a more serious note, that’s pretty awesome for people who put their privacy, security and well-being as a priority.

David Hopeward

@TransitBiker Haha… but yes, it’s really an example of putting the user first, and power into individual hands.
The exact opposite of corporate SocMeedz!

DELETED

@hopeward nice, I used temporary mute for news accounts If I'm not in the mood. This approach looks even better. Thanks.

David Hopeward

@FalkAppel You’re welcome. I really like it, so far!

Frances Larina

@hopeward

So wait; if selected it's both a positive list (go to the list to see only list member posts) AND a negative list (don't show these accounts on my main feed), too? So potentially I can now separate all of my followed accounts by topic or other criteria?

David Hopeward

@Frances_Larina Yes, that’s it. Separate streams of posts, sorted however you like.

Sam Liebeskind

@hopeward this is super cool, thanks for sharing!

Do you know if there is (or will be?) a way to add someone directly to a list? - as opposed to the current flow which, as far as I can tell, seems to be 1) follow the person, then 2) go to your list and 'edit list' and add them to it

David Hopeward

@samliebeskind You’re welcome, glad you liked it!

Follow and unfollow are primary functions, I don’t think that will change.

Fardels Bear

@hopeward

That would be a gamechanger. There was absolutely no point in lists if they couldn't do that.

David Hopeward

@riggbeck If your instance is upgraded to Mastodon 4.2 you can do it right now…

Katrin Bretscher 💛💙

@hopeward do people who I put on a list know that they are on a list?

David Hopeward

@katrinbretscher No, I don’t think so. It’s just about what you see, not any effect outside of your account.

Edd

@hopeward holy crap, this is a game changer. I've got a bunch of accounts that do mass-posting (like @pluralistic) who I want to keep up on daily, but who I get really annoyed when their post dump ends up in the middle of my feed while I'm trying to do a quick 5-minute check of mastodon between meetings. Thanks for pointing this out!

David Hopeward

@iMeddles I know what you mean, and you’re welcome!

Matti Aleve

@iMeddles

For Doctorow’s posts, I filter on “Long Thread” which he adds to every post after the first one.

This way I see his first post and the rest are hidden. I can click on the first post to get the whole thread.

David Hopeward

@juliewebgirl Yes, thanks to the Mastodon development team for this one!

JW prince of CPH

@hopeward I've heard about this & wait with bated breath for our admin to update so we get it! Without it lists are borderline useless (for me, anyway) but with it... a game changer!!

(I don't want to pester them, though, which is why I'm not passive-aggressively tagging them here 😁

David Hopeward

@jwcph Oh, that’s patience! I hope they get it done for you soon.

Yes, I didn’t really get the lists idea, but with this tweak they make so much sense.

Cali Spera

@hopeward

Absolutely, this is huge for me too

On fact I'm mumbling to prune all my accounts but one

deco

@hopeward @pluralistic oh that is brilliant.

I was literally just thinking, god I love mastodon but it can be uber depressing seeing all the fucked upness going on in the world, I wonder if there would be a way to filter news... Except,oh man, I feel like it also keeps me informed, so....

And then this! Very interesting. Thanks for sharing!

David Hopeward

@deco @pluralistic Exactly how I felt… and you’re welcome!

David Fleetwood - RG Admin

@hopeward This is fantastic! I'd been wondering if there was a way to do this. Thanks for the heads up, I need to get my instance updated.

David Hopeward

@reflex You’re welcome. Yeah, I think when I first looked at lists I thought it might work this way… but it didn’t. Much better now!

piegames

@hopeward Neat, I'm going to use this for people whom I don't really want to follow because quantity but whom I want to see elsewhere (federated timeline, answers to others' posts)

David Hopeward

@piegames It’s really flexible once you start using it. I’ve got about 7 lists so far!

Jake

@hopeward Huh. Doesn’t seem to work for me. My new follows are showing up in my home feed even though I added them to the list and have the list set to hide these posts from home.

David Hopeward

@gloriousnoise It won’t retroactively affect the feed, but new posts will sort right after you set it up.

the roamer

@hopeward

Interesting. Megaboosters fill my Home timeline fast: I have to scroll by their boosts to see other posts. The new feature overcomes the problem by acting like a temporary mute, not showing these boosts in my TL,

But ... the Home TL holds a maximum of 400 or 800 posts (including muted posts). Megaboosters not only push other posts down, they push them out entirely. 10 of my follows posting 40 posts each leave nothing else in "Home". That may still happen with the new List feature?

David Hopeward

@the_roamer I don’t know the answer to that.
You can mute an individual’s boosts and only see what they post themselves, if that feature interests you.

Dubi is here :Dambo8:

@hopeward Brilliant! This brings us a step closer to Mastodon also being a useful alternative to RSS readers.

David Hopeward

@Dubikan Great! Glad it helped.
Are you saying Mastodon can follow an RSS feed as if it’s an ActivityPub account? I didn’t know that one-?

edd

@hopeward Holy cow, finally. It's been a pet peeve of mine that you couldn't follow someone and it just puts them in a default "Home" list/timeline, and you could add them to another one/remove them from the "Home" list.

David Hopeward

@edd Peeve relieved! (I felt the same way…)

Mackaj

@hopeward

I'm looking forward to that too.

I still find the option below it confusing though. Like, why would I reply at all if "No One" is selected and therefore no one can see it? Seems pointless.

Maybe they mean "any one" and it got lost in translation?? 🤔

Paula Kate Marmor

@hopeward I did this for a News feed a couple of days ago, and it’s brilliant.

Pierre

@hopeward Oh, thanks a lot! I had overlooked this new feature and it will be really useful to me, for the exact same use.

astroPug

@hopeward

This is totally something I have needed. I follow some very active accounts that otherwise tend to take over the home feed. Thanks a lot for sharing!

Heliograph

@hopeward thanks for pointing this out, very helpful ☺️👏

Janne Moren

@hopeward
The official Mastodon app doesn't support lists, so that's a bit of a blocker still.

Zorro

@hopeward I've had a look in Tusky's List settings but can't find the option. Perhaps we need to wait until the feature is transposed to the apps?

1 tripod in 3 trenchcoats

@hopeward ohh, that's right, I can just put people on a list. thanks for pointing that out, I have a mutual who is oversharing a bit much but who I like too much to unfollow

Slug Girl 🏳️‍⚧️

@hopeward that is actually brilliant to have a news feed, and not have it in your regular feed!

Vostronix

@hopeward yea lists are actually really nice I use them also very active the next big feature will be groups :mastoinnocent:

Magpie2022

@hopeward Thank you for sharing! I use lists quite a bit and didn’t like that the same content would show up in my main feed. I avoided using the main feed because of this. This is a huge win for me.

artisanrox

@hopeward

this is awesome. I like the "Press" hashtag but THAT hashtag alone takes over sooooooo much of my feed I can't get anything else, and I had to block/unblock it to use it.

Much needed feature!!

David Colborne

@hopeward Had to go into the web interface to enable this setting on my lists -- seems this feature hasn't been ported to Tusky's UI yet.

That said, really looking forward to this setting applying to future posts on Home! Between enabling global search and now this, Mastodon's UI is really coming along.

FairLight

@hopeward this is a basic yet awesome feature, something I always wanted from Twitter but...

Glad it wss added!

L.J., un-author-ized writer

@hopeward It seems like a port of exclusive lists from the Hometown fork, and I gotta say, "Hide these posts from home" is way easier to understand than "Exclusive." I'm a recent convert to lists on Hometown and they have made my Mastodon experience so much easier and pleasanter.

Don Cooley

@hopeward
I have had several such curated lists for months. I noticed the don't show on home option recently and thought i had just been overlooking it.
But in truth, i was not seeing much in my home feed except the recent, and the list was a "shortcut" to go to their home and see their latest, even if it was hours ago.

HankB

@hopeward Sounds cool. I created a list named mags and added Ars to it. And checked the "Hide these posts from home" checkbox. Ars posts still show up in home and "mags" is empty.

KevinOnEarth

@hopeward
Thx. Now I know.
Two things I'd like to see on #Mastodon (you there, @admin?) are:
1) to be able to open out the columns in the advanced interface (e.g. to fill my screen), and
2) to see a profile summary on rollover (the address alone tells me nothing).

Orion (he/him)

@hopeward Oh! That second button is really fascinating: respond only to other members of the list. That really is giving you a whole different set off feeds, almost independent of each other. Huh.

Jon Udell

@hopeward Excellent news, thank you! I rely heavily on lists (e.g. blog.jonudell.net/2023/01/21/w) and was going to build that filtering into my dashboards but would rather just flip that switch. I've got nearly 20 lists, is it doable by API perhaps?

Update: Wait, it looks like flipping the switch for one list works for all? If so, perfect ... for me, at least :-)

Shine F.

@hopeward This is my fave feature in the new update. Extremely handy in curating my timeline!

TJ Radcliffe

@hopeward

This is working really well for me, but now I want to be able to put the hashtags I follow into lists so I can do this with them. I know most of them are mirrored by a.gup.pe groups, so I could go that way, but c'mon! (cue Keanu Reeves on top of the trash heap in "Johnny Mnemonic"): I WANT FEATURES! :-D

Ian Jago

@hopeward @megalodon
That’s a great way to use the feature.
It’d be even better if that got merged upstream and became a standard feature.

Squiggle
@hopeward v4.2? The latest I can see is 2.1.6 (and it does not have this feature).
Aljoscha Rittner (beandev)

@hopeward

Oh, this is a game changer. I need to update my documentation.

Thanks to pointing out.

Mic

@hopeward yeah I've been waiting for this feature for a while now, glad it's finally here.

Elena Alonso

@hopeward hi! Is this feature available for the mobile app?

Carita Sommer

@hopeward
Just tried it. Great! Thanks for sharing!

Mike Woods

@hopeward This would be just perfect for "noisy" feeds that I want to just dip into occasionally. @Floppy - any chance of this being implemented on the mastodon.me.uk instance?

Mario Breškić

@hopeward Interesting take. I’ll put this in front of another set of eyes.

ronaldopace

@hopeward I feel this is going a bit into the TweetDeck experience, where you can have your main feed and separate customized feeds, and I love it.

Pumpkin Spice Cat

@hopeward This is great and I have wanted this feature for a while!

Weird Socks

@hopeward
I use Megalodon. I am not seeing the "Hide from Home" slider as an option for my lists.
Is there something else I need to do?

Chris Hessert 🇺🇸 🇺🇦

@hopeward
The next awesome step to this would be to allow followed hashtags in lists. (Not currently a feature.)

Brackmeister

@hopeward
That feature totally slipped my attention so far, thanks for the pointer!
Although I don't have any specific accounts in mind right now, I remember that in my early Mastodon days I was trying hard to figure out a way to put people on lists without following them.
Will try this out at some point as soon as the use case pops up again for me.

🖤 lined lips & spiked bats 🖤

LB: this is also perfect for accounts like me that post LOTS and might oversaturate your home timeline if you're not following too many other peeps

you can give me my own special separate feed now!!! 😁

JimmyChezPants

@hopeward

Was already aware of this but have not yet mustered the executive function to try it out. Thank you for the reminder though. :>

Rob Bos

@hopeward That's so great! Thank you for pointing this out, I wanted this feature months ago.

Now, I wish they'd do that with hashtags, too. It'd be nice if I could put #trump and #uspol into a list, but then *remove those from my feed*.

thagomizer_

@hopeward The ability to "Pin" a hashtag without actually following it in the advanced interface works with this lists feature nicely as well.

Kevin Mirsky :donor:

@hopeward This is an INCREDIBLE change! Thank you for highlighting this!!

Christian Lauf

@hopeward And now allow sharing of posts with an added comment on top (like quoting on Twitter) and yes! I have my beloved Google+ back. Just better, because.. No Google.

Jubei

@hopeward wouldn't they accomplish something similar if they introduced tags? I think that's the modern way of accomplishing this. Tag people based on the content they share and keep a list of hose tags on top of your stream.

Plakat

@hopeward Perfect, thanks! Just what I was looking for

David Frew

@hopeward This is fantastic. I created a lists called * Bot list *BBC News and *Not Bots and I was using "Not Bots" instead of Home. .

Ithanul

@hopeward

Oh sweet!

Thanks for the heads up. Thats been a little annoyance to me, since I already been doing up a list for just art but kept seeing folks I follow over on the main too.

Ryan Rampersad

@hopeward that's awesome, that's exactly how I want to use lists!

Jelv 🎴

@hopeward iOS people favorite client #ivory by @ivory has support for this ✨ new feature 💕
