To ppl who join Fediverse because of Twitter or whatever, donโ€™t leave, give it a chance.

a lot of people i see join, use it for like 3 days then leave once any threat related to Twitter was mitigated.

Iโ€™m rly happy I stayed, made a lot of friends here, had actual discussion here, plus less toxicity!

Anyone who is new, give it a chance, stay, I believe youโ€™ll like it :)

@mcalel staying here was one of the best decisions i took recently

@mcalel Agreed! Itโ€™s so much more comfy and less toxic/judgmental here imo.

@mcalel Probably the roughest part was finding an instance to get started on. I was able to reconstruct a decent-sized slice of my twitter feed via migration tools; since then I've been spending progressively more time here, while Twitter management continues to slow-boil that site with fascism.

@mcalel The actual conversation part is what's a winner for me! Twitter felt mostly like people making statements and getting shared. Here just about *everything* gets at least some actual engagement, and I have several real conversations a day!

@mcalel i'm actually not scared to go out and socialize on this platform, people are nice and not mean and evil

@mcalel@tech.lgbt If you do leave, don't leave to another centralized service.

Try out other platforms that use the same ActivityPub protocol that Mastodon uses, like Calckey or Akkoma :) (Tumblr is also planning on adding it).

@mcalel I'm slowly easing myself into this. I really want to be more active on here, but a majority of the people I follow are still over on Twitter or other socials.

Luwukas ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆ

@FizzyImp I guess my sort of โ€œnothing to loseโ€ mindset allows me to easily move and ditch people who donโ€™t care enough to come to me on here. Itโ€™s totally fine to try to weasel yourself into here! Hell, I still check Twitter from time to time, albeit a lot less

@mcalel I find Iโ€™m commenting less, unless I think I have something worthwhile to contribute. Over there it was about jumping on the bandwagon, joining in the outrage.

@mcalel@tech.lgbt most people decide to stay with twitter because everyone else is there and they do not realise that they are being manipulated. The toxicity of the platform and the view manipulation algorithm make everyone unhappy and angry. Then people complain that social media are toxic.๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

@mcalel Yep, agreed. I still consider myself new, but this is an awesome space to be in and I am enjoying it.
I have not been back to Twitter in ages, but I think this is not a Twitter substitute, it is way way better.

@mcalel @HopelessDemigod agreed! I think part of the problem is people don't like "starting over", having to rebuild a following list takes time and effort, vs. that twitter feed they've built for over a decade, you know? I always tell folks, "Patience & follow liberally!"

Luwukas ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆ

@renwillis @HopelessDemigod I also see a lot of people who say they hate twitter, come here, then go back within like a week. Iโ€™m not sure what they miss from there. I had a large following in twitter but went here cus I liked more

ren ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆ (a they/them)

@mcalel @HopelessDemigod It is jarring to go from a busy feed curated over years to over a decade to justโ€ฆ. Nothing. It takes some work to find people to follow, going down rabbit holes of good boosts to find more. It wasnโ€™t until I really got a great group of people to follow that things started feeling like a home here. You know? I think a lot of people just donโ€™t want to put in that work again. - let alone start from scratch on their own followers.

Luwukas ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆ

@renwillis @HopelessDemigod I guess I just didnโ€™t like the attitude or behavior of people on twitter, I felt more at home here. I get where it coming from tho

ren ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆ (a they/them)

@mcalel @HopelessDemigod Me too. But Twitter felt like this once too. Scale is the enemy of social networks, but Iโ€™m hopeful that a federation of thousands of โ€œtwittersโ€ is hopefully less shittification inducing than the shitshow most social networks become.

@mcalel I think it's neat, having trouble finding people with common interests though. Got any tips?

Luwukas ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆ

@Untitled_1 honest to god I struggle with ppl too cus of social anxiety, try interacting with ppl. I started off by finding random ppl on the federated tab :)
