I hear instance admins and moderators "keep people hostage" on this here fedi. At least that's what some people commenting on my BlueSky-related blogpost keep claiming. Somehow always in a "free speech" context. :thaenkin:

Anyone feeling taken hostage by their admins/moderators? :blobcateyes:

@rysiek hackers.town is treating me well and I am making this statement of my own volition

Abandoned

@rysiek

Surely they mean they are taken aback by their host's age and maturity.

Fifi Lamoura

@rysiek 😂 I most certainly do not but then I'm not trying to cosplay being a 13yo boy on the internet.

@rysiek Yes, I do. Because I *am* the sole admin and mod, and thus actually need to do stuff to keep this running ;)

@rysiek I dont really understand what they mean :blobcatgiggle:

For example: Twitter is just one platform with a set of rules, if you dont like or follow them you are out

The Fedi has thousands and thousands of different servers with each their own rules so always something for you or even setup your own and you are still connected to the whole network :blobcatgiggle:

Soo yeah, i dont understand what they mean

I have seen this argument (being allegedly taken hostage by an instance administrator): this could have been an attempt of expressing compassion towards users of an instance that has been blocklisted.

However, this view seems to miss the complexity of a situation, eg. an instance might have been wrongly or arbitrarily blocked (lack of evidence, outdated data, misunderstanding, inadequate moderation in the past, etc.), or it hasn’t been taken off a blocklist (imperfect appeal procedures).

Before users decide to migrate away from a blocked instance, there should be another track exhausted: there should be an effective appeal procedure and fediblocks should not be of undetermined duration.

Yes, it is also the case of 101010.pl instance. Ii think this instance is now unfairly treated, but I do not now what to should be best done to have it delisted. (I’m just a user - not an admin).

@mb I am not going to dive into 101010 stuff, it's a complex subject and I had some thoughts that I had shared way back when on that.

But the point I am going to make is that even what you describe is not "your instance admin holding you hostage." That is, it's not your instance admin that is stopping you (hypothetical, generic "you" here, not you personally) from migrating.

So even that reading of that "argument" makes no sense to me.

@rysiek my admin doesn't leave me alone. Where I go, they are. They know my darkest secrets and deepest desires, and they control my every move I make. It's as if we're one and the same :blobfoxdeadinside:

@rysiek If I'm a willing hostage of my instance admin, is that still a hostage situation?

Les Orchard

@rysiek not me, i'm a social media mountain man, ascending those cold peaks all by my rugged individualist lonesome self to trap & skin memes. only time i come down to civilization is to sell my wares. i don't need no mods to tell me what to do

Michał "rysiek" Woźniak · 🇺🇦

@lmorchard and yet you participate in socie^W^W^Wuse an instance hosted by someone else, how curious!.. :thinking_rotate:

@rysiek Nothing stops anyone from migrating to a server more in line with their values. Exactly no one is a hostage here. XD

Now if your values are garbage, that does mean you probably don't get a megaphone to blast them in everyone's ear and that seems to make a certain type very whiny, because they don't seem to like being in a room with people of their type any more than the rest of us.

Tokyo Outsider (337ppm)

@rysiek Not sure if I mentioned it but I'm building a tool people can use to move their content to new instances (since Mastodon only migrates follows). I felt a bit "held hostage" when my content focused account ran into problems with instance admin and I realised how tough it'd be to move. Can only presume that's what they're talking about.

In any case, a test version should be out within a week or so. Testing it myself at the moment to migrate 140 posts with images and video.

Tokyo Outsider (337ppm)

@mhkohne @rysiek Thank you! The version I have so far is very basic, but hopefully I'll be able to add to it over time. It will never be the all-singing, all-dancing solution that true identity-portability will provide, as what can be achieved with a client external to Mastodon is fairly limited. But I really hope it will be some help to those who wish to preserve what they have posted. 🙏

Bill's in the shop for repairs

@tokyo_0 @rysiek Hot damn! Thank you for tackling one of the biggest blockers to departing unhealthy instances!

The Gibson

@rysiek weird, I thought I was the hostage in this situation. :)

kaateeh :heart_cyber: :pipverified: :donor:

@rysiek I don't :) Our admin does his best to keep the instance going. I met rather friendly people in fedi.

szescstopni

@rysiek I don't, but I'm pretty sure someone will try to convince me that my instance server is in Stockholm :)

Andres Jalinton

@rysiek
The admin in my instance is an ass he censors me and ban me 6 every 7 days, today it's my only day I can post. :OOOP:

Dave/Loebas :verified_pride:

@rysiek i absolutly dont have the feeling that my masto admin is taking my account hostage

prozacchiwawa

@rysiek honestly like the notion of having an instance vibe.

Erin Nivelet

@rysiek
I'm my own admin (single user instance) so yay, I feel pretty much taken hostage by me... 🤣

vruz

@rysiek They crave for reach and they will say any bullshit necessary until they dominate common sense in their little capitalist garden.

@rysiek actually big shout out to the mod-team of bsd.network. It is kinda moderated and it made me appreciate the concept _a lot_ more again. The whole environment is so much nicer for everybody if people are accountable for their shit, in case of doubt have consequences and have a shared minimum standard of how we want to interact. Good conversation is actually enabled through this, not prevented.

Btw. THIS is also the reason why I like the german version of "free speech" a lot more then the american one. You are more (legally) accountable if you insult others.

This is generally true everywhere.

@fellmoon @rysiek

If it wasn't for my business continuity needs, I would still be cozily ensconced on bsd.network. Because daaaamn, it's cozy.

Ted :pmgpurple:

@rysiek My admin totally holds me hostage. (I am my own admin…)

JohnW

@rysiek My admin likes to hang out in my town for a few weeks a year. If he takes me hostage I'll let ya'll know.

That is if he lets me post on the internet....

Please send help. And craft beer.

Jens Comiotto-Mayer

@rysiek @tchambers Nope. But I set up my own instance since moving accounts including their identity and timeline data isn’t possible, which, to me, would make it too costly. I’m not aware of another way to own my content here. Hence, I can follow that argument, at least partially.

Michał "rysiek" Woźniak · 🇺🇦

@jens @tchambers right. Yeah, I would like account migration *with* content. Some people are working on it.

Still, "holding hostage" suggests intentionally exploiting that fact. I have not seen that on fedi, at least not yet.
