@Natanox im on step 3/4 and i dont think ill be reaching 4 in the next 4 years
Justus

@Natanox Damn, I messed up the order... actually did the 4th one first :(

Koz Ross

@Natanox I hit stage 4 before stage 1. Is this proof that maths is secretly always modular?

Christi 🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈

@Natanox it’s actually a very inclusive community. There’s people here from all distros of life.

Odradek

Switch

@Natanox replace the Linux compiling with "and now I add image descriptions to my posts" and that's me. :)

Natanael ⚠️

@switch @Natanox somewhere between step 43 and 47 there's "become an instance admin just to add image descriptions to other people's posts"

SCY

@Natanox I’m somewhere between stage 2 and 3

Jaseli

@Natanox Yes, I'm currently at stage 1 😳 😂

Jaseli

@Natanox In 30 minutes, I have graduated to stage 2.

Alexander Merry

@Natanox I’m at stage 3, but I have no idea what stage 4 means !

Natasha Nox 🇺🇦🇵🇸

@ZenMezzer think of it like someone who only recently found their love for bikes suddenly disassemble, clean and reassembe a whole motor. 😉

Nathaniel Banks

@Natanox I first compiled a Linux kernel in 1994, so I think I'm out of order.

Chris

@Natanox may have accidentally started with stage 4

SM1836

@Natanox stage 2 here. I fear I might be here a while. :apartyblobcat:

davidak

@SM1836 that's fine. take your time 🙂

maybe check out one of the many guides people recommend currently or ask for help. most people are happy to help

🔥ɹɐppɐɯɐs ʌǝp🔥

@Natanox I did these steps backward. I compiled a Linux kernel first, back in 1999-2000…

Smellbringer

@Natanox I mean, I own a Steam Deck so I'm kinda there on the Linux thing.

davidak

@Smellbringer the linux gaming community is very happy about valves contributions like proton, the linux support of the games and VR headset and now the steam deck

@Natanox. And I can't wait for #FollowFriday to introduce you to some of the cool people I've met up in here:
@odanu
@mojomoomoo

Hrustar

@Natanox Hoping this is true. This is my first interaction and yes, it's an awkward platform.

Natasha Nox 🇺🇦🇵🇸

@hrustar It's very different, but once you get a grip of it it's really cool. :) Think of it like you just moved to a new town and first entered the pub alone. You gotta have to start somewhere, once you talk to people the rest will fall into place.

You can look up people who put hashtags into their profile here: fediverse.info/explore/people

You may also find some stuff you knew from Twitter through Twitodon: twitodon.com/

Samira Ahmed

@Natanox I’m still in stage 1 looking forward to the others (not so much 2 but it’s a journey, I guess)!

Ami Berger

@Natanox can confirm, currently somewhere between 2 and 3 and looking forward to linux kerneling

Diane Bruce

@Natanox Or a FreeBSD kernel *whistles innocently* Actually much more fun to write a device driver to be honest.

davidak

@Natanox i use mastodon since 2017 and at this point, i casually test kernel patches and even maintain a #bcachefs kernel package on #nixos (well, not very active anymore, but my name is in the metadata 😁)

search.nixos.org/packages?chan

but all this is very easy on nixos

this was my initial commit of the bcachefs package

github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs/commi

this is how to patch a kernel

codeberg.org/davidak/webseite/

(i was a linux admin, devops and software developer, so i might be biased when saying it's easy)

mzan

@davidak

many thanks: I used for at least two years NixOS + SSD + HDD + bcachefs without the minimal problem!

PJ Coffey

@Natanox I resist the siren call of Stage 4.

For now.

Dr Nancy Doyle

@Natanox I am very much at number 2 still.....😂

DELETED

@Natanox

You missed out "I'm a gay trans cat girl/boy nyaa"

@SekhmetMedusa

Barry

@Natanox it's very much like Green Day's welcome to paradise.

At first we're scared to be somewhere new, but soon it's now getting like our home.

MadVikingGod :kubernetes:

@Natanox umm did I miss a step? I think my computer is now in a container and in the cube cloud.

Rebecca Schneider

@Natanox Gosh, it's been so many years since I've compiled a Linux kernel, is this why all the sweetness has gone out of my life...?

Petter1

@Natanox compile a linux kernel with yocto is indeed on my bucket list

lyrical lama

@Natanox is it ok if we get stuck at step 3? 🙂

Natasha Nox 🇺🇦🇵🇸

@LauraM4peace No problem. 😉 But you perhaps end at other fourth steps like becoming a Furry or catgirl nyaa UwU~

Introvert Gay

@Natanox lol it’s just like me compiling Arch Linux in college

Evan ☑️

@Natanox I feel lost and alone how does this work

Natasha Nox 🇺🇦🇵🇸

@thisistheevan Think of it like you just moved to a new town and got into the pub the first time - try follow some people, the rest will sort out itself over time. 😉

You can look up people who put hashtags into their profile here: fediverse.info/explore/people

Evan ☑️

@Natanox that’s a very apt analogy:) I’ll check those out for sure!

Dr. Keith R. Brunt

@Natanox Currently at the lost and alone stage, lol

Jared 🇦🇺🏳️‍🌈⚧️👽

@Natanox some of us compiled our first in 93 I think! But other than that.. pretty close!

Ossi OH8HUB

@jared @Natanox My first Linux compile was around 1.1 or 1.2 in Slackware. Back then it was more requirement compared to current times.

Michael Rawdon

@Natanox I can guarantee everyone that I will not be compiling a Linux kernel any time soon.

Yadi

@Natanox currently on level 2 of this! 😄

Douglas "revdjenk" Jenkins

@Natanox Well, haven't compiled a Linux kernel, but have used it since 2001 ... now mostly with Chromebooks...

BlueLantern56

@Natanox Currently in stage 2, but think I can see stage 3 in the distance.

Tobias Frei 🦀🐍

@Natanox What's 5? First did 4 like 20 years ago. 🤓

Natasha Nox 🇺🇦🇵🇸

@shuntingyard Hosting your own Fedi instance on a Gentoo homeserver! :awesome:

Tobias Frei 🦀🐍

@Natanox Oops. While I use Arch Linux on a daily base with ease, I never really made my way into Gentoo 😂

Tobias Frei 🦀🐍

@Natanox I really like Arch (for it's rolling character and for leaving out nonessential stuff on top of GNU/Linux).

Natasha Nox 🇺🇦🇵🇸

@shuntingyard I once installed it to learn a lot of details and finicky stuff quickly. When I tried other distros like Pop!_OS later I ended up disliking so many design choices which I reverted or changed anyway that going back to Arch was the sane choice. 🤭

nickapos :clubtwit:

@Natanox that last one should be hosting my own instance but other than that spot on. 😂

Ted Haland

@Natanox I love it! I last compiled a linux kernel almost 20 years ago, so I think I have to restart at the beginning. I'll say stage #2 right now!

Benedikt

@Natanox is installing and using a Linux distro a cheater's way to reach 4? Or is it 3 1/2?

Natasha Nox 🇺🇦🇵🇸

@bhaug It's the precursor to 4. Surely it will happen at some point... 😏

Laura Cox.

@Natanox I'll never be the last one because I don't know what that is. 🥴 😆

Evan Light

@Natanox ah nuts. My continued failure to gif on mastodon makes me sad. Lr Cmdr Data laughing. Not as funny narrated, now is it? 😂

Natasha Nox 🇺🇦🇵🇸

@elight Let me guess - you CTRL + V'd it into the browser? 😅

It's a bad habit of browsers to only copy the first frame of a gif during copy + paste. Too bad both Tenor and Giphy are owned by either Google or Meta to collect even more data, otherwise it probably would've been already integrated into Mastodon. 😔

Seeigel ☑️

@Natanox Stuck between 2 and 3 and pretty sure never will reach 4! 😂

Keith Devlin

@Natanox So true. (Well, I don't anticipating getting to stage 4, but I do Unix (or rather did many moons ago)

Azizi *~UwU~* 🐽 …ᘛ⁐̤ᕐᐷ

@Natanox im on stage "considering deleting". Tbh im not sure what im doing here. Never had any social media ever and decided to try mastodon cuz it seems like a thing rn. It all looks like everyones posting their own stream of consciousness and that's all nice and fine tho to me its just random interactions with a bunch of strangers.. I keep wondering why ppl even like social media at all. I can't find much appeal in any of this

Natasha Nox 🇺🇦🇵🇸

@cuntess_evil That's totally valid if social media, or microblogging in this case, ain't something for you. However, perhaps @pixelfed is more of your taste? It is a Fediverse equivalent to Instagram (Fediverse being the network Mastodon is a part of), so more for artwork and any kind of graphics to share and less stream of consciousness. :yayblob:

I wish you best of luck finding your place in a healthy digital space. Trying out Fedi services is a good choice!

Azizi *~UwU~* 🐽 …ᘛ⁐̤ᕐᐷ

@Natanox @pixelfed thanks its kind of u to reply to me. I can't say which type of social media might or might not be better and for who as I don't have much experience with it. I keep wondering how ppl find time to engage so much unless its their job. I doubt i can ever find the time necessary to build any following or any meaningful interactions online.. It seems like a monumental task not meant for ppl already so busy away from keyboard of any kind

Herr Tuslowsky

@Natanox Der vierte Punkt kommt ziemlich aus dem nichts und unerwartet, aber das ist ja die Pointe ;-).

higgins

@Natanox Personally it's more applicable if read from bottom to top, still spot on 😀

VincentWrites

@Natanox I'm waiting for that Oh wow moment, and I do hope it comes.

Kincavel

@Natanox so true , I'm at stage 1 - I'm lost...can you tell me what a kernel thingie is please?

Natasha Nox 🇺🇦🇵🇸

@Kincavel Oh, nothing you have to worry about right now. 😄 a kernel is the core of any operating system, like on your phone, computer etc and compiling means translating it from something human readable to machine code.

If you're feeling lost on Mastodon perhaps this toot helps you out: chaos.social/@Natanox/10930456

Nasir Ahmad

@Natanox it's for me pretty much more of a kanban board 😂

Marcel

@Natanox@chaos.social Yes, pretty much this way :blobcatgiggle2:

Laurence

@Natanox I don't know what a linux kernal is, but this made me laugh.

Murgraal

@Laurence @Natanox a kernel is the core of an operating system that makes it possible for software to interact with the hardware. Linux is an open source operating system.

jnbhlr

@Natanox It's a couple of years since I compiled a linux kernel, but still need to figure this stuff out.

TentacleQuing

@Natanox Somehow I started with #4 years ago, I did it all wrong

Quantium 40

@Natanox 😍 Love it! Although I'm apparently stuck in step 3.

DELETED

@Natanox
you forgot the fifth stage which is "I have now abandonned all computer-related activities to live in a remote landscape with three living souls around which are my significant others" :’)

toot.bike Admin Team

@Natanox As in: "I have compiled a linux kernel with latest optimizations in BTRFS to make my Mastodon server fly!" (Please no ZFS vs BTRFS flamewar, both are good)

Lennart Paul

@Natanox ohhh...I guess I have to find some time for step 4 then 😁

NightHouse :verified:

@Natanox

This is very funny, but the timeline is not correct. Actually I compiled my first Linux kernel in 1996... 🤣

John Dean

@Natanox Sorry, I actually first compiled a Linux kernel a long time ago.🙂

lifewithryan

@Natanox oh wow. I remember those days. I haven’t compiled a kernel since Ubuntu came out. Not because Ubuntu was awesome, but because I got lazy. I do miss my vanilla Debian every now and then.
